Just started playing the tos themed content and i love it.
I wish there was a way at level 60 to fight with one torpedo and one prolonged beam, like in the original series, less of the scatter everything into the air.
Much like the first experience of sto, where there is not so much visual clutter going on. Do not get me wrong I love fighting with visual clutter everywhere I just wish i could switch it round some times to have a visually simpler combat experience.
One or two torps instead of 30 helps give a fight more drama and gravitas that these really are big ships slugging at each other. Rivers of torpedos and disco balls of beams are fun but they do not really ring true to the star trek the original series, next generation etc.
Some thoughts on how to do this.
have ships weapons 2 slots on front and 2 on back with 5 modular slots each, much like the weapons modules for ground but for space.
the 2 slots define the visuals, sounds and the type of weapon, eg beams, torps,
the modules allow people to put in all the things they want say 5 epic beams, 5 epic torps,
This is then shown in combat as 1 beam and 1 torp,
Slightly bigger and with a longer duration. This 1 beam and 1 torp should hit really hard combining all the modular slotted items.
beams should last longer and be cylinders of pulsating energy with a differnt colour core to them, not just single colour lines,
a bit like the corrosive visual and some of the other visuals for beams.
Obviously there might need to be a multiplier effect balance mechanic, because instead of 20 beams firing all over the place there will be 1 or 2 heavier hitting beams, maybe there needs to be a target lock mechanic like in real life aircraft to deal with the super fast vapers going around It could be 360degree firing arc but require 2 to 5 seconds to lock on target.(thats just a thought) I do not know how faw or ts3 would work maybe 1, 2, 3 beams / torps maximum per target?
I understand what youre saying and id have to agree with the discoball of beams and TRIBBLE. i am an avid ENT fan and would like to color my phasers a more of a red color and reduce the spots it fires from so it looks more like the series.
I wish the firing was at least sequenced. There's only one episode in which we ever see all phaser banks firing at once. In every other episode there's only one firing at any given time.
I would like a slow charging, heavy hitting beam - at least for cruisers and dreadnoughts. Escort beams on the other hand should charge rapidly, but deal realitively low damage per shot. There would be no change in dps but a large ship could breach your shields with one hit while escorts would need several volleys.

most of DS9, the entirety of voyager, first contact and nemesis all disagree
I guess you're refering to that:
To which I would say, first, this is a sequence of short bursts to find and aquire a cloaked target, and second there's still only one array firing at any given point in time. First the dorsal forward one, then the aft (dorsal or ventral) array.
As soon as the target is found, it switches to longer firing burst from one single array.
The same happened in DS9. One array firing two bursts but never several different arrays firing at the same time:
From Voyager I can only remember fast, but sequenced phaser fire.
It's even clearer in First Contact, one array at any given time.

the KT wasn't technically arrays - but every other example is a clear firing of multiple phasers
the only reason you only see one firing at a time in TNG (up until Q Who?) is because FX is expensive and they didn't have all that much money per episode - it is in NO way a reflection of how phaser arrays actually work

The Sovereign class has at least 7 dorsal arrays on the saucer.

I may not have been clear enough. With the exception of this scene
beam array fire has always been sequenced fire. Meaning that there never was another scene in which different arrays started and ended their firing sequence at the exact same time.

I'm generally for less visual spam. Beams and cannons all firing at once just looks like a sloppy mess in game.
I don't know that they really need to do anything radical, though, just do some visual overhauls of the FX so that over an entire firing cycle it may look like you're only firing one or two beams, but all of them are firing.

Although, Fearful, the Original Series Enterprise used Dual Beam Banks and not single beams.

FIRE EVERYTHING!
Apparently Voyager did fire multiple arrays against the Vaadwaur.
Looks to me like multiple arrays on the Ent-E.
Some might not like this, but even the KT Enterprise fired from multiple arrays when shooting down the Shrapnel Torps.
And here's the NX-01 firing two separate Phase Cannons at two separate targets.
