It doesn't surprise me.. there is a reason we're all here despite the horrible mismanagement. The game is good, it's fun.. it has a lot of great things going for it.
I advise friends to play it all the time, even if you don't want to spend any money, you can get more hours out of all the story line content then you can from most AAA titles these days without paying a cent. There is a ton of great content in the game that's free. If you just buy a basic starter pack for bank space and one T6 ship, you would be more then fine and be in it what? $40 if you didn't wait for a sale?
Overall, I would agree that STO is underrated. If it was more competently managed, I really think the game would be a much bigger success.

I think the game is mainly doing great because it's Star Trek though.
Free content, lots of options with ships, loadouts and so on are certainly positive things. But that alone doesn't explain why the game has survived, imo.

Indeed, I've always held this view. Irrespective of personal opinions and issues, it has more content than most AAA games, and almost infinite combinations of equipment. One person said STO wasn't a good game because of it's 'dated' graphics, a view which is utterly wrong. I still play games over 30 years old because they're replayable, and I've played games with 'realistic' graphics that are utter trash and end after just 4 hours.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
What STO needs is more funding from the powers that be. At least in my opinion.
STO has a lot of things going for it that a lot of other MMOs don't. The customization is certainly one of the best out there.
Does STO have its issues? Yes. But then again every MMO has some issues.
The reason there are so many folks stick with it even though there are many issues that need to be resolved is because it is such a good game. We may complain a lot about this or that, but that simply means we want the game to improve so that others, who may not be as forgiving as us, can also enjoy it.
Congrats, Cryptic! Until all the changes to the skills, loadouts, etc. are done, I will not respec to clear that. Since it apparently is a project according to the latest livestream. So I will let it be until that is done or until I need to do it.

I would certainly not disagree with that opinion. It's what brought me here after all.
