I have 2 but only play my KDF, too casual for much more than that. I may do more on my fed when I've done all the reps on my KDF. I'll eventualy do a Rom and Dominion.
I've just started playing Star Trek Online, so I only have one character right now, but I would like to create more characters. Although I have no intention of creating a lot of characters, could someone please tell me what the maximum number of characters are for each faction, and what player level do I need to reach before the game will let me create more characters? Thank you in advance.
You don't try to do it all at once. It is a long term effort. You can still play even if you are not maxed on every bar for every drop down or pop up window.

I have a Fed-Tac Alien main who has been around since launch. I created a Klingon-Tac Alien to be a sibling to see the other side.
Have a couple of regrets... went all in on Jem’Hadar... weapons, ships, everything... now there are playable Jem’Hadar who get bonuses to Polaron damage. Wish I could move everything over.
Second, I made my Romulan Fed aligned since I had more ships even though I felt story-wise my Romulan would have joined with my Klingon ally.
Lastly, I really like the blip* warp in of my lowbie DSC and would pay real Zen for that effect on my established character.
All-in-all I’m pleased with how STO has adapted over the years. Just wish there was a way to move that progress over to a different character.
It is getting to the point with me that the Deletion of characters is getting itchy. I really am finding the Need to just have and want one character over the couple 65's I have and a few lowbies. Truthfully if it happens they go to the glue factory I don't ever plan on wanting them back. This brings me to the fact that I deleted two already but a CSR asked if I wanted them back and I said sure. But turns out, I think I regret having them restore the characters. So now I have the conundrum of deciding how much I just want one character, I have Bad OCD with this. How many people out there are happy with just one character? one you know you will enjoy for a very long time? Is it even possible? I find now I am more jumping around than ever than before my characters were restored. Hmm not sure what to do in this case. Thoughts?
I would keep the extra toons just for storage if nothing else. Nothing says you have to play the toons simply because you have them. If need be give each toon a theme. Such as Toon 1 is your main. Toon 2 you run as a science space wizard. Toon 3 you run only cruisers with. Toon 4 only escorts or so on. Gives a purpose to each toon.

Yeah I have over a dozen characters but I don't normally play more than 3 or 4 a day. You just don't NEED to use everyone all the time.

Yeah I still have them and that is what I am doing finding each one serves a purpose one way or the other, Glad I still have them to be honest, and thanks for the advice!

One thing I did years before the endeavor system was making at least one character with each energy type. That way it's as simple as logging in with the character that uses that damage type.
I've just started playing Star Trek Online, so I only have one character right now, but I would like to create more characters. Although I have no intention of creating a lot of characters, could someone please tell me what the maximum number of characters are for each faction, and what player level do I need to reach before the game will let me create more characters? You start the game with 8 unrestricted slots, meaning you can create any character in them. There's no restriction on faction. If you want all Fed, you can have all Fed. If you want all KDF, you can have all KDF. If you want all Rom, you can have all Rom, etc. If you want a mix of factions, make a mix of factions.
Of course, you can purchase additional slots. My lifer acct has 20 characters and I still have a few slots leftover. My F2P doesn't have any extra slots beyond the original 8 and there's four or five characters there.
So don't worry about maxing something, the slots are all unrestricted.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
I assume it'll be easier after you've maxed out the first toon as you'll have T6 reps and a main that can craft.
For now I'm just happy with my KDF Tac, doing the episodes and enjoying the content. Just hoping endgame isn't the pain WoW was.
Endgame in STO is not much different from leveling except that there is not as much mission stuff and it is a bit more TFO and event oriented. It is not like some games where endgame has nothing to do but PvP and occasional raids (DCUO was nasty like that for example, back when I was playing it as my main game it was like two totally different games based on the same engine, the leveling and endgame were so different).
If you like STO enough to reach endgame in the first place I doubt you will find it a pain
I am ok with one char, i start to play a few years ago i can't remember when but i remember the game way too simplistic in missions and classes.Due to another popular game at that time i quit after a few days but too mounts ago i decided to give STO another try. Now i am happy with one character try to TFO for reputations and other daily missions is fun until i will decide what i like the most before i buy some things in game. I already spend like 10 euro i think for some duty officers but even now i don't know if it was a good investment.
Conclusion: happy with one char, basic t5 ship a few mounts untill i learn all the things in STO
I have many characters that I cycle though on a daily basis, to keep the admiralty plates spinning since it's the only way to gain dilithium in significant enough quantities to convert to Zen. When I first started playing (way back when the game first became FtP) I only had one Fed toon and soon after (upon meeting the prerequisites) , a Klingon one. Then when LoR was released, my Romulan character came to be. Delta Rising saw the creation of my Reman character (Reman hood was a necessity to cover those fugly ridges on the back of the head I couldn't get rid of).
Buying the various expansions (usually when discounted) included free character slots, which I filled out to get each combination of career path and main faction bringing my total to 9. At this point I felt this was enough, until AoY came around and my Andorian toon came to be. And again with ViL creating my Dominion one and once again with Discovery.
My roster now has 12 names on it, the only reason I might make the (unlucky) 13th is another expansion (I have 2 slots left) since the variations on the UI different factions give the role-playing aspects greater depth. As the game has grown it has made new characters ever-harder to maximise. My discovery toon, being the newest is not even close to mastering all of the unlocked ships, for example. And more characters multiplies the problem of mastering new ships, meaning use of double-XP weekends (like this one) more important than ever.
Not sure how the game decides which order they appear in since it seems to change constantly but those 12 names break down like this, by faction, career, energy type. All except the Dominion character are female. And when you spend enough time and energy customising each one, you tend to get VERY attached.
Rom:
Nova. Romulan, Sci, polaron.
Xodek. (DR) Reman, Eng, antiproton.
One of One. Romulan Lib. Borg, tac, antiproton.
TOS Fed:
Zamara. Andorian, Tac, phaser.
Dom:
Amat'igan. Jem'Hadar Vanguard, Eng, polaron.
DIS:
Alyssa. Human, Sci, antiproton/disruptor.
Still, there are perks to having multiple toons. There's the aforementioned benefit to having at least one toon dedicated to each energy type, as well as multiplying the amount of dilithium ore (and by extension, Zen) available for refinement. Certainly there's some satisfaction in clearing out all the T6 ships in the store! 😁
I'm well past having just the 1 character. As a write and RPer, I tend to get lots of ideas for characters. As a result, I have quite a few of each class, and all the factions. I've also done Temporal/TOS toons, Delta Recruits, and even a Jem'Hadar. Made Star Trek flavoured versions of original characters as well. Heck, one time, I even made a Gorn "gangster" after watching a 1950s B-movie!
Also, something about playing STO takes me back to childhood and playing with action figures. ^^;; With that said, there is something about having a variety of "figures" to play with, complete with your good guys and bad.
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.
I only had a single character on my very first account for a very long time. That was years ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if I played only a single one for like two years.
I do feel tempted to delete some alts nowadays (I have somewhere between 10 and 15 characters now) but instead I'm just retiring them. I don't really see the point of deleting characters - it's not like you need the slots if you intent to play fewer toons, right?
Sure, it might put someone at ease, seeing only a few characters every time you log on, but in my case the cost would be quite high as most toons have some unique gear, including ships.
It would be nice if we could get an option to send stuff to other characters if we wanted to delete a toon though.
I started Fed/Science. I then added a Klingon/Tac character just to get free ships during the annual giveaways. Next was a Reman/Fed/Eng when Legacy of Romulus was released. Then I added a Rom/KHG/Tac to feed my Reman bridge officers, because they never dropped for her. That gave me 2 characters on each major faction, and life was good.
Then we had the Delta, Temporal and Gamma recruitment events, and I made a character for each of those. I also got burned out. I finally finished up the Gamma awards a month ago, and roughly half of my characters haven't finished up the gamma and discovery reps. I'll do something on 2-3 characters a night for whatever the current event is, and to get a couple of endeavors done, but I'm not trying to complete all the stories on all my characters anymore.

I don't see the need for anything beyond that, for me at least.
