Purchasing Zen from Steam wallet now charges tax?

Last night I wanted to buy 3000 zen through the C store. I'm playing through Steam so it took it from my Steam wallet. I had $30 in my wallet ready, but choosing the 2000 first, there was a tax. I still wanted the zen so I completed the purchase, but now I only have $8ish left in my wallet, so I can't afford the other 1000 at this time.
I've been using Steam since 2012. When did they start charging tax?

    I don't use Steam for STO, so can't comment on the when/how. But absolutely, if there's a tax in place it's because legislation changed and governments are telling e-shops to add tax now.

    There's no tax using Arc though, last I checked. At least for me, buying in Canada. Though if Steam had to make a change, I'd say it won't be long before other e-shops have to make the change too.

    Arc probably will not be collecting taxes in Canada for a while yet, there are still a lot of problems with international e-commerce taxation so far and it is not likely to be a thing until some of it is hammered out. Even here in the US it is very spotty, with some states demanding tax while others are not yet.

    And even for the US states collecting taxes, some have not yet met their side of the requirement to make it reasonably easy instead of needing to calculate 1,000 different rates based on the exact street address (in the US the sales tax can vary by state, county, city). My employer is collecting taxes for a couple of US states so far, but waiting on others.

    What if you live in a state that doesn't charge a sales tax? Guess I'll have to contact steam and find out.

    I'd guess it has to do with where Steam physically locates the sale. Like, your state may have no sales tax, but the state Steam operates under financially might require all sales to be taxed under that rate.

    Or it's a federal thing?

    In the US, it's only state sales tax (there is no federal sales tax) and is based on the billing address. So if your credit card address is in California, tax. In Oregon, no tax.

    The other rules have to do with whether you collect any tax for a state at all. It used to be based on having a "presence" in the state such as offices or shops, but states want pure online vendors to collect too.

    Oh I know it's not Cryptic OR Steam. I was just surprised and was wondering when that started.
