That does NOT mean if you open 100 then you will get a ship.
BEFORE you open a set of N packs, you can calculate the odds of getting at least one ship (possibly more) from those N packs. This only works BEFORE you start opening because probability has no memory.
For R&D packs you can use the Windows calculator in scientific mode and type in .99 (X^Y button) N where N is the number of packs. This is the odds of getting -0- ships. Subtract that from 1.0 to get the odds of 1+ ships.
For 100 packs, .99 X^Y 100 = .366 = 36.6% chance of being ship out of luck = 63.4% chance of your ship(s) coming in.
So 1/3 of people who open 100 packs get no ship.
This is why if all you want is a ship, buy it on the Exchange.
I have not interest in the T6 Promo Ship. However, I will purchase the Promo R&D packs and sell 'em on the Exchange sometime next year. My Jem'hadar character is sitting on the back burner because I simply have no time to play that character with my 12 other characters. My typical plan is to purchase a 4 pack for each of my 12 active characters. But maybe I will buy more than that during the sale.
27. for me , 3. and 17. for a fleet mate. first days of these boxes is allways fun. if you want lobi and those r&d boosts this is a good way to get them. ship is just a nice bonus #stohasnonegambleboxes
Since they first started these Infinity R&D Promotions I've gotten three Promotion Ship Packs. One, from the first one two years ago, and two others. The first and another is still in Banks. That first one began its life as an Account Bound Pack so it is in the Shared Bank, now Character Bound because they changed the binding rules. Too much flexibility for their tastes.
I normally buy 20 R&D Promotion Packs during an Event and have been getting the Ship Pack after about 5 or so openings. I have better luck with R&D Packs getting the Ship Prize over normal Infinity Lockboxes.

I was just looking at my e-mail box and NX1 Gaming sent me a video review of the R&D Promo ship....
He says in the video comments he got it on his 58th box he opened.
Is the system changing if'y words to TRIBBLE or are people doing that on their own, following some Internet Fad?

I had money/zen to burn, so I spent $40 on R&D packs. I can't remember how many that got me, but I had 16ish left when I got my promo ship. It is the first and only ship I won.

They replaced censored words with "TRIBBLE" a month ago. The system used to just replace it with asterisks. Also, the abbreviation for Star Trek Discovery has been deemed derogatory and in bad taste so is now censored, too.

I have lucked into 2x T6 Connies so far. Having said that, I haven't cracked open that many R+D boxes. I couldn't tell you the number of boxes offhand, but less than 100. So I say I've done allright. Though I can't say I expect to have those odds again. Though I certainly won't complain if more come my way.

This! as others have already said, play it save, and play it smart, that way you can get more than just your connie from how the market is acting right now (people buying those packs). I'm not going to tell you how to quickly get that money together BUT i'm saying this, keep your eyes on the R&D sector right now and you'll have your ship in no time. NEVER gamble if others can do it for you
Thing to remember about the odds is the way they're defined in probability mathematics, meaning that if you have the odds 1 out of "x" of getting something, it's defined as "when the number of sample approaches infinite, you'll get the item in every x sample".
In this case if the odds are 100/1 if you open billions if not trillions of boxes you start to get the item in every 100th box semi-consistenly. That said any realistic amount a one person would open is up to chance, you might get on your first box or you 1000th it's all up to luck.
That's why people are saying "don't buy boxes for the purpose of getting a ship", since the chance of that happening is so small as to be impractical, the ship is a bonus not the purpose.
For the cost and the rather limited usefulness of the actual product, the chances could stand to be much better like (i.e. 3-5%), as could the Lobi consolation. 30+ Lobi might actually make these things attractive.

Whilst I agree, in part, the lobi and chance to get a ship is a BONUS to getting the pack already, which is also discounted atm. The % chance to get the ship is okay in my own opinion, having won I think 4 ships out of the 200 or so packs I've ever bought.

I got mine on the 5th box. Haven't had anything better than a rare phoenix token come out of a box since, I think I used up all my luck forever on that one.
I've opened hundreds, HUNDREDS, of lockboxes, Phoenix packs, R&D packs, etc. I think I got maybe 2 tier 5 Mirror ships, and never higher than Very Rare Phoenix. That's it. My ratio is currently infinity to 1.

Well then you're lucky, because on the whole most players who open these abominations don't win the ship they were dreaming of. And many of them come to the forum to complain about it.
Every time there is a promo like this, we have at least one thread of someone crying that they spent hundreds of dollars and got nothing.
Don't be one of those people.
This!
It's probably cause I'm friends with RNGesus
Generally I spend only what I can afford, and I never buy keys just to sell for EC because paying all that money just to give those keys to someone else is economically pointless as I'm only gaining a ship, whilst the guy who gets the keys goes on to benefit more. Opening boxes gives me lots of opportunity to gain something I can either use or sell, as well as the Lobi.....and the rate I win ships is far greater than the supposed 1 in 250 that people often quote.

I feel like the only person who wants the Amarie more than the other ships (it would be perfect for my Orion pirate). But I've had no such luck with past R&D promos.
Comments
stockpile enough and you'll not only have enough money to buy the ship you want directly, but possibly also have money left over to outfit it
sure, you may not get the ship immediately doing it this way, but gambling carries a very high risk of not getting you one AT ALL

NONE....not a bit interested in the new ship but will definitely save up for a T6 Connie or the Annorax.
