I am a pretty casual player, and have never been a PvPer in any game I played. Then Champions Online did something that made me actually do some PvP; which is let you temporarily play as one of the game's villians.
I've never been a fan of normal PvP where an uber player can stomp someone who will never bother to min/max, but for some reason playing as a powerful "monster" with a crowd of people attacking you(or conversely, playing as a member of that crowd attacking the monster and being able to duck out if you start getting kilt) is just kind of fun.
It's not hard to imagine this in STO, where in a special queue or battlezone a limited number of people are playing as Borg or Undine or whatever, while the majority are wailing on them. And of course it almost goes without saying that both sides of that fight could earn marks in a new reputation.
So yeah, I would enjoy something like this in STO

I would rather see them use the mechanic to level out PvP gear to a common level... (edit: in other words to be on a more equal footing) where players have a chance without investing heavily in specialty gear and traits.

Actually, I've played both "sides" of this system and enjoy each perspective. Playing as the monster against the crowd can be fun, but playing as the crowd against the monster is also fun. But no, it's not the monster curb stomping 1 regular guy; it's the monster vs a crowd, and the crowd eventually wins.
Not a bad idea. The only problem is it is 100% off topic to this thread.

Not only is that false because they never said that, it's false because recent missions like Renegade's Regret prove they can let you play as a different type of character and ship that isn't your own.

I think the asymmetry can be fun. There's a boardgame called "ogre" that built around that principal, and it's a blast.

Renegades Regret was a test-bed for Monster play, but just cause they've done it once, doesn't mean this is 'easy' to implement either. It's something they are continuing to develop though, so we may well see even more in the future.
