That translates into a good actor then, it means he will be on point again for star trek. Maybe we can learn of how Pike was before he lost his bottle on Rigel VII and why he was such a great captain.

I am very happy with this casting news. Didn't care to watch Inhumans, but he was excellent in HoW. Despite the exciting ending of S1, I have to admit I was bummed knowing S2 wouldn't have Lorca. However I'm hoping the Pike character will help to fill that void.

Well bear in mind, Discovery is already after Talos IV, that was like 2 years ago Discovery time IIRC.
I thought the date was 2257 by the final episode of season 1 on Discovery?

"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

If so, that puts it about three years after the Talos IV incident - according to Memory Alpha, that happened in 2254.

Now i really am interested in knowing more on Pike. 3 years after the incidents at Rigel Vii and Talos, i want to know where his head is at. We knew he left the Enterprise and knew we was having serious doubts about his leadership. I wonder.. I wonder if Discovery will renew the man he once was in a story arc that begins his redemption? Perhaps we will find out how he ended up in the wheel chair in a more definitive canon ending. The chances are that if Discovery can last at least 5 seasons, the Pike character probably won't last any longer than 3-4 seasons at most.
This will leave some interesting questions, why Spock was willing to consider court martial in the first place and his loyalty to Pike over that time. I can't see how Spock will be able to stay out the Pike story for very long. If that Merger between Viacom, Lionsgate and CBS is successful, Zachery could come on and do a few episodes.

Doing more mental math, Talos IV took place 11 years before Kirk assumed command of the Enterprise. Spock also said, in "The Menagerie", that he had served with Pike for 11 years. Therefore, if we assume that Pike commanded the Enterprise until Kirk took her (someone is in titular command, even in spacedock), the Talos IV incident took place in the same year Spock was first assigned to the ship.
I wonder if Quinto could believably play Spock at that age, or if they'd have to digitally youthen him - assuming they could afford him at all, of course. Then again, it's not like Spock was a member of the senior bridge crew at the time; they could cover his not being present by mentioning him being assigned to Astrometrics or something.

I think the creators already used the term "our universe" in interviews. The DSC designs stand in no logical succession to the TOS designs or vice versa. Nor do any "cease to exist", it's just two different design languages running analogous to each other. You can switch optics in your head if you will, the visuals are not tied to a consistent timeline (any more).
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^

They said Spock wouldn't be seen in the new season, didn't they? I really don't know how they expect to pull that off story-wise and how they can really pass on that opportunity.

How is do it: Spock and Sarek don’t speak anymore. After Spock joins Star Fleet, Sarek pretty much disowned him. Spock then turns his back on his Vulcan heritage and opens himself up to emotions (which also explains how emotional he acts in The Cage). It isn’t until Spock represses his emotions and lives as a Vulcan and Journey to Babel that they speak again...though still strained. (In JTB Amanda mentions that Spock and Sarek haven’t spoken in 18 years).

Sarek and Spock stopped speaking during the border wars when Spock attacked Sarek's position, before this Sarek and Spock always had a strained relationship, more estranged than anything. The reason their relationship was so strained was because Spock chose to pursue his own path when he was young and Sarek wanted Spock to join the Vulcan science Academy, it didn't end for years.

Hm... the timeline puts a new spin on the design evolution of the Enterprise then. I was thinking:
Discovery > Cage > TOS > Refit.
But now its looking more like:
Cage > Discovery > TOS > Refit
So visually we evolve from this:
Which has what appears to be a place for a bridge window.
To this:
With a CONFIRMED Bridge window.
To this:
With no Bridge window.
And finally... to this:
Pretty interesting design evolution IMO. Especially with the Nacelles and Bridge module.
If The Cage is not canon but The Menagerie is then it's possible that the reconstruction we see is simply a glitch showing the wrong refit of the Conni.
Or we'll get the re-remastered TOS Blu-rays soon with the Conni in The Cage, The Menagerie, WNMHGB, and possibly Mirror Mirror retconned to the DSC version (and even less likely In a Mirror Darkly's Defiant as well).

And with the fact we don't really know what Pike has done other than his involvement in the incident at Talos IV... we got some opportunities here.

I'm pretty sure it's just:
Cage / TOS Retconned into TRIBBLE
An option I fully support, cause I've always thought the TOS Connie was hideous, but the TRIBBLE Connie is a thing of beauty
