Why cant we play as Andriods?

in Star Trek Online General Discussion
..We got most of the starfleet roster, why not Android? I know few are made at a time and only one really has a title and rank, but why cant we be Androids in a MMO. Maybe Data figured out how to make more like him with individual processors. Each being unique in there own way, then take that story and run with it. Maybe some of the Androids went rogue and maybe Lore used time travel to come back. Just a thought

    Veto'd long ago, I believe. Their unique traits probably contributed to keeping them Boff & NPC exclusive, I think.

    Speaking of named NPC Androids, anyone know if it was CBS or STO that decieded 0718 should be an Android instead of an augmented Human?

    Paramount, based in his official origin story from the Kelvin Timeline comics from IDW where he was grown by the ship (under alien influence) and his mind was programmed by Spock.

    Interesting, were they made before or after the actor said he was a normal human that just has cybernetic implants? More importantly, are they hard canon?

    Exactly. I haven't done this, although I did something similar for a Romulan/Reman hybrid character (she serves the Republic fleet as a privateer, rather than an actual Fleet member, so no uniforms on her bridge crew), but that's exactly what you do if you want to play an android. (Heaven knows there have been enough in Trek history, starting with the androids created by the ancient mechanism on Exo III (ST:"What Are Little Girls Made Of?"), and the Norman android deployed by Harry Mudd in an attempt to seize the Enterprise (ST: "I, Mudd").)

    I dunno about when Gatt made the comment in relation to the publication of the story. The story though was overseen by Bob Orci, who created the character, and thus is as close to the unimportant designation "hard canon" as is possible without being laid out on screen.

    One says the guy is human and absolutely not a robot or android of any kind, while another says he's the exact thing we were told he absolutely isn't and not the hing we were told he is.

    These people need to coordinate better, they're getting their lore mixed-up already...

    Well, for me at least, it's obvious who has the weight in that discussion and it's not the actor. Scripts don't say what a character's life story is, just lines to be spoke and emotions to be inflected. Hence the old acting meme, "What's my motivation? What do I have to live for?" Meanwhile, those who write the scripts are clearly much more privy to the life and times of who they're writing, and the world they live in. So, yeah, if the actor says one thing yet the writer says another, go with the writer.

    Stuff from the jarjar verse is better shot from a cannon than being placed in canon.

    He's a hack that picks stuff from skimming a wiki page, thinking "ooh that'll work with lens flare" and ignoring everything else that might make it close to trek rather than a flashy low grade scifi romp.

    The canon information on 0718 is that he's a bridge officer with a semi-robotic voice and is credited as 'Science Officer 0718'.

    Anything else is BtS material and is non-canon by definition.

    Nothing any actor, director, producer, or writer says matters or has any bearing on the story until the second it makes it on screen. Until that moment it is just a fans headcanon and carries no more weight than any other fans headcanon. Orci, Gatts, or even Cryptics personal theories on 0718 are as valid as whatever any of you want to headcanon for him, i.e. not valid at all.

    Well there's no such thing as 'JJTrek' so it won't have any lore. The Kelvin Timeline films however have three films worth of lore.

    There is no character named Jar Jar in Star Trek. You maybe thinking of Star Wars.​​

    Why can't I play as a Cardassian on Fed side or as a Suliban on the Rom side?

    They either can't add them, don't want to add them, or perhaps have some plans for the future.

    Wait until June. You know that expansion they announced already. I doubt the Jem is the only race we can play. I would suspect Cardies too.

    They already said that the new faction is Jem'Hadar only with a few different variations of them. If they add any others it will be to the other factions.
