What Do You Think? Re-engineering

First and foremost, I wish there was a vendor or interface that allowed for the quick salvaging of multiple items, and a way to repurchase those items if an error is made, basically the same way that one can sell loot at a starbase for EC. That way there would be no need for the ok/cancel dialogue, which combined with the fact that you have to right click each item to salvage, really slows it down. I realize it's still a new system, but hopefully this will be added shortly.
It would be nice to be able to mod reputation and lobi items as well, but the former is much more important, IMO.

I thought it might boost the EC economy because folks looking for quick Salvage might finally have a reason to buy some Green junk, but I think that most players just make ten Purple Beams, then Salvage the seven they don't like and use that to try and make fix the eighth one that seems most like the one they wanted in the fist place.

I'm guess the DPS crowd will like this best, but I have not seen a boost to the EC economy that I'd thought I see, so I'm still selling my white, green and blue gear to vendors. :: shrugs ::

I think the answer as in most things STO is Argala. I had to level some Andorian pilot ships and took them through there. The salvage is fairly plentiful. I imagine those that are using this system just grind that for a few hours.

I haven't used the system yet mostly because the stuff I would want to change isn't available yet. I'll check back in with it in 6 months or so.

We need a special salvage coffer, and/or an 'auto-salvage' option. I'm getting RSI. Not kidding.

There was a short-term surge as prices went through the ceiling for all kinds of low-quality equipment right after re-engineering had been introduced, but it seems prices are back to normal now. I guess everybody interested has by now accumulated piles of salvage they can never spend. Just as GPL, another more or less useless currency :/ Sad...

I'm happy with the initial release of the system, and I hope the devs can find time to make it even better:

    - Make it possible to re-engineer more rep and lockbox gear, by adding proc or proc x 2 as needed to lock in the special attributes.
    - Make it less work to salvage loot drops, such as the suggestions for an auto-salvage filter for white, green, blue drops.

Or maybe just let us Re-Engineer a Lockbox directly into 100 salvage each. ;)

I think this new skill is for new players. I been playing since beta, have life account yadda yadda, and it is soo infrequent that I need a new gun or gear that this tool seems fairly useless. It just seems like it is another way to clutter up the game with skills that are already covered by other skills.....crafting, loot rewards.....another RNG resource sink that is trying to remove a large chunk of cuirrency from the game.....

Is it useful? Not for me.

I applaud them in trying to create fresh new content and skills.....but this is a no go for me....

you are right it does work well for new players/toons. I have a new toon that has ACC on all weapons, as he gets higher and gets the retraits for accuracy, I can reroll those ACC to DMG or Crt

Place all your feedback for the new Re-engineering system right here!

We need a better way to select the gear to RE-ENGINEER. I'd love to have a checkbox method, like we have in our in-game Email system for mass deletion. Or a box to drop them in and then click a button to "SALVAGE ALL" or some-such EASY way to salvage.

Basically, we need a REVAMP of our INVENTORY Window.

Tried turning some of my EC into Salvage points...... buy junk off exchange........ wouldnt let me salvage it...... is there any other way to earn salvage credits?
Using the vendor trash that drops from Red Alerts is a good way of doing it, you just salvage instead of sell.

What I didn't expect is being able to RE the modifier gained upon a weapon becoming 'epic'- only once the lower mods have been done will I turn my attention on those. Across my 10 toons, the (REable) equipped weapons alone must number more than 70. When I factor in the spares that I have in the account bank (which I had to expand to its max), it's looking more like 100...

Yeah, it's going to be some time before I once again offload gear onto vendors! :D

Whatever else you think of the system as it stands, it beats the hell out of being saddled with an item that upon reaching UR gets a lousy modifier like [Acc]. Given that getting the item to that stage typically consumes way more dil than REing it does, it's not a bad trade-off. Certainly there aren't many upgrades that don't have a dil cost at some point.

Of course the need for getting a weapon that rolls with great starting mods is as important as ever, it's no longer the be-all and end-all.

Snare and Thrust have been the bane of my crafting experience lately.

In fact if they don't want to us to just get Pen on everything (which we totally would), then at least let us roll in a normal mod instead.

I decided to craft a particle emission torp earlier, went UR, good. 3 x CrtD, even better. Then I see Snare.

May as well just given me an error message with a giant middle finger picture attached to it. Though it's arguably more useful on a torpedo, it's still something I don't like seeing.

LOL! How humorous this story is. But it only makes me curious...next time I have any time. I guess, I will pick up a few Snare and Thrust weapons on the Exchange just for S&Gs.

They'll likely be mostly mine the way things are going.

Crafting can be a mean mistress.

A side effect I've noticed is that because the system needs dil as well as salvage, the dil:zen exchange rate has dropped a bit. Only by doing more PvE stuff (I have ten toons I rotate through) will I be able to RE more than a handful of times a day.

Needs dilithium, just like everything else in the game. Doubt I'll waste my time with this system very often.

Is it that hard to just use salvage instead of adding to the million other things that already use dilithium?

That is the best question ever asked. Not that I expect a rationale to clearly explain the ongoing highway robbery the game imposes on dilithium accumulation.
  • orangenee#2931 orangenee Member Posts: 837 Arc User
The rationale is simple. The more dil players use, the more players buy zen to exchange for dil keeping the price reachable for those F2P only guys at the same time. The freebies can get their zen keeping the metrics high enough.

Those selling zen can't load up the price as they use just enough to keep the price up (because the whales are largely greedy capitalist pigdogs). Those buying zen (freeloading socialist scum) can't buy so much it devalues dil entirely. Nobody gets to be ahead by very much.

The occasional phoenix event and similar USE ALL THE DIL events also keeps the balance. Cryptic know full well the playerbase are quite capable of gaming every system in the game.

I give Cryptic credit for this balance. They do have a sense of economics and whilst people say they have no clue about the playerbase, they absolutely do.

That said, the holdings are overkill as very few are willing to blow dil for a 1:1 return when flarks, doffcrete etc exist which offer a far better rate.

I have noticed something that other players should be aware of. When clicking re-engineer on an item, the available mods are only fixed until you click it on another item, upon which time the possible mods from the original are lost. This means you can keep doing this until the mods you want show up more than once.

An example is with the "epic" mod, it's perfectly possible for the CrtD/DM mod to appear in 3 of the 6 possible choices. Pretty damn awesome to get the odds of a particular modifier appearing to be 1 in 2! :D

    Really?

    ...

After some more research I've found I was overcomplicating things; the 6 possible mods you get upon clicking "unlock" actually reset when you close the re-engineer window, no need to run it on another item in between. The point is you can shift the odds of rolling the mod you want from one-in-six to one-in-two, if you can get the mod you want to appear in half the slots. It's rare but it does happen.

Basically how I feel. I salvage stuff mainly for the components to use in R&D but I have yet to re-engineer a single item. Not playing the slot machine.

I enjoy it for the most part! But once all my weapons are done what then? I’m hoping they introduce more things to apply it to

Basically yes, after all, that's why Cryptic made it look like a slot machine. It's a 2nd chance at RNG gambling to get the mods you want using up dilithium & the newest currency salvage.
