I have a friend that just rolled a KDF-aligned Romulan alt and is able to fly KDF ships. I believe I tried to access Fed ships even on ESD and could access Romulan Warbirds. I at least wanted to the Fed ships for the Admiralty cards. It makes sense that you can't fly Fed ships as a Romulan as Cryptic is selling Rom versions of the Fed ships in the C Store. If Rom can fly Fed ships where's the money in that? I assume my friend is wrong being able to access KDF ships. Is that correct?

Though for some reason roms can still fly the account wide, not upgradable, T5 Ambassador that was handed out during a giveaway. Go figure...
Basically fed-roms have much less trouble getting sci cards than everything kdf related.
Following that logic, should the federation not have access to a Klingon Bird of Prey?
Back on Sept. 1st 2014 the T5 Support Cruiser Retrofit (Ambassador) and the T5 Varanus Support Vessel were made available to be claimed for free by Fed and KDF characters. The T5 Ambassador was the 2013 Anniversary Ship, and the T5 Varanus did not sell well at all. It was pretty inferior to even the worse Fed T5 science vessel sold in the C-Store. Romulan characters were not given anything likely because there are not that many T5 Warbirds and they were all probably selling pretty well so giving one of them away would have dug into future sales.
Anywaste... I was actually quite surprised that my Fed Aligned Romulan character was able to claim the T5 Ambassador from the C-Store. Unfortunately, I was not able to claim the T5 Varanus with my KDF Aligned Reman character.
I haven't tired in a while but I seem to recall that Fed ships all had a price at requisitions. It seems equally expensive and easy to buy faction ships. It's true there are more science ships in the Fed faction. The word easy doesn't come to mind.
When? All I remember is them capturing some of the crew, not the ship.
Yet they can't use the klingon D7 class, despite having operated it in canon.
Fed-aligned Roms can also fly the T6 Ouroboros Temporal Raider.
That Temporal ship trio are cross-faction ships, though. Everyone can use them.
Honestly, I would like to see a set of xfac ships. At least, give each faction one of the iconic designs of the others. So Feds/KDF might get, say, D'Deridex or Mogai, KDF/Rom would get Constitution or Galaxy, and Rom/Fed would get the B'rel, as an example
Made even more arbitrary with the romulans, who actually can fly allied ships, too...except when they can't.
I'm glad this game has 2.5 factions, and that Cryptic has made a lot of stuff for the less popular 1.5, so don't backtrack and dilute what's already built with this kind of nonsense!
> Allied Romulans can access T1 thru T4 ships from their allied faction. So Fed allied Romulan can use Fed ships from T1 to T4 (plus the T5 Ambassador that was given away a few years ago, the Crossfield class from the Discovery lockbox & the Walker class from the Lobi store). Likewise KDF allied Romulans can access T1 thru T4 KDF ships plus the Sarcophagus from the Discovery lockbox.
To be clear, the T5 Ambassador was a glitch: it wasn't supposed to be claimable on Fed Rom and the corresponding KDF giveaway wasn't on KDF Rom.

Logically, for enemy ships, the argument could be made that we're being given clearance to use captured ships, simply by virtue of skill and might. We've proven ourselves capable of handling pretty much anything else (Iconian ships, new fleet flagships, captured hostile vessels, etc).
As to the Romulans, one can argue that the tier cap is a trust issue. Starfleet and the KDF don't entirely trust the Republic, and as such, won't give them access to the cream of the crop ships with the highest-tech and most proprietary gear. So they get ships that have been in service for a long time and are fairly well known to the Romulans.
I thought that WAS the official in game universe reasoning for it...

Bah, the romulan ships have all the same gimmicks. And as per the Disco lockbox, romulans now do get T6 allied ships. Except when they don't. Even more stupid Fed/KDF don't get allied ships at all.
Or how about the mirror universe ships, which are enemy ships but still inexplicably assigned to prime universe factions? Except when they aren't (Paradox). Or the mirror universe clothes...can't help but laugh at the mirror Romulan Republic uniform, released with the same lockbox as the doff assignments that revealed there is no Romulan Republic in the mirror universe, just to feebly attempt to justify not letting us buy the Terran uniforms.
Why is the bajoran ship cross-faction but the bajoran clothes Fed-only? Or the ferengi clothes of all things?
Why can Fed/KDF captains toss romulan Scorpion fighters out of a carrier hangar, but not fly one themselves?
Etc, etc, etc...
None of it makes any sense.

You can fly almost any of the main allied craft. In fact, all the ships within any faction are playable.

Main point is that Romulan ships are almost all refits of archaic designs, scavenged up by the Republic forces and rebuilt to work. Plus, Romulan ships use what can basically be summed up as proprietary systems, in the form of singularity cores.
Anything they have that isn't refitted is joint-developments with the alliance, and has a companion unit with other factions.
As to the Discovery ships, they're technically archaic designs that both factions have refitted to contemporary standards. All things considered, it's not kept hush-hush.

Cultural ideals? KDF would likely not exactly smile on their warriors or vassals wearing Bajoran clothing, since they have a strong unified identity, rather than the homogenized acceptance of Starfleet.

Factions agreeing to share fighter wings, but not trusting their allies with Singularity core vessels, in case?

Same goes for advanced and elite.
Which is relevant how?
And the "companion units" don't even make sense to exist in-universe. To build functionally identical ships with vastly different appearances is a horrible waste of resources.
But the NX is? The Constitution is? The Kelvin ships are? No.
KDF doesn't give a rodent's posterior if their warriors show up for battle in pink pajamas in this game.
They're the exact same ships.
