All ships come with default Mk X white quality gear. Most of it cannot be upgraded, which can be annoying in the case of some weapons like coalition disruptors that come with certain ships. I think this should change.
Mk X common gear is useless, and the only way to make it useful is disabled here.

Would you be willing to pay a per-weapon 'unlock fee' of some amount of Dil in order to switch these weapons from non-upgradeable to upgradeable? That's the only way I could see the devs changing their status.
Except they aren't infinite? The weapons in question are from lock box ships..
Thus, we are not only looking at lock box ship weapons.
If a gear item overlaps with the Infinity lock box gear then sure it can be left non-upgradeable. If it does not, then Cryptic does benefit from allowing upgrades by creating another dil sink. Making dil more scarce helps to increase zen sales to those who trade zen for dil.
I'll note I also use the phasers that come with the TOS connie for this purpose as well.
In the case of infinitely reclaimable ships, this might not work indeed. Thanks for pointing that out.
Still I believe that ships that can only be claimed once before they have to be bought again should come with upgradable stuff.
Same here, this is even the worst case of stuff being un-upgradable.
Maybe keep the hangar pets, too. But yeah, the well laid out white Mk X equipment doesn't always scream "useful gear".
Simple answer there is that the moment you upgrade it, it becomes account-locked, and you can only have x amount (equal to the amount the ship comes with, maybe) in your bank/inventory.

Yes this would also be a nice option to have. In most cases I don't care about the white gear indeed, but for some weapons it could be an interesting alternative way to get them.
I don't really see the problem. As long as they make sure that you can't reclaim the weapons for free indefinitely. You're still paying for the lobi or lock box ship. I think it's only reasonable that the set of weapons it comes with, is made more useful than they are right now.
I mean, what's the point of giving players a free set of special weapons with their already very expensive ship, if the weapons are just completely useless? Whatever content you will play in a new ship will drop more useful stuff before you've even completed the first mastery tier.
Because the weapons, other than any special kinds like the Voth Wide Angle, are only meant to make it usable out of the box. Its not supposed to be awesome immediately. And if a ship comes with weapons available out of a lockbox...

No of course it's not supposed to be awesome immediately. But that's not what I'm suggesting it should be.
You'd still have to upgrade those weapons yourself.
Just wishing that the player could make these things useful. To me it makes little sense to add weapons to a ship that will never be used because
1. They are mk x white quality
2. They cannot be improved
Allowing them to be improved would still require investment on the part of the player and would solve issue #1 then, making something that's entirely useless right now, into something more useful if the player wishes to invest in it.

I completely agree with making those unique weapons upgradable. But I wouldn't stop there.
I agree though I have coalition weapons that are MKXII already not sure why this post came up really. Can we really not upgrade them to MKXIV?
I would stop with "if it's unique, upgrade, if it's not, don't."
Every "placeholder" item I strip off of a new starship is a 100% generic, pure white, version of something I can craft. And usually can craft it at a lot higher quality color than white.
The "expense" of molding a white Mk X to a Gold Mk XIV in upgrades alone would be significantly more expensive than molding a Mk II purple to Mk XIV gold (then hitting it with re-engineering to tweak the bad UR mod...). The only time that taking Mk X to Mk XIV is cheaper than Mk II is if you hit the quality improvement chance on each upgrade.
If you're really sadistic (or want to gamble), you can craft Mk Xs in fancy colors then shoot for the upgrades...
