    I don't want a Cadrassian faction but I do want a Cardassian faction. :)

A full faction, or even half faction ala Romulans, is impractical this late into the game. Not only would you have to make the level up ships (two of which are lockbox cross faction, thus they shot themselves in the foot), they have to make equivelents of every T6 ship like the Pilot Escorts, Command Battlecruisers, Miracle Worker ships, Intel ships...

AND on top of that, they'd have to make some Cardassian specific missions and revamp all the cross faction missions to include stuff for them like they did Romulans...

Not to mention ignore established canon regarding the status of the Cardassian Union and the fact they are not able to field a full military due to treaty from the end of the Dominion War. They can field enough for a Self Defense Force, and some in the Detapa Council have apparently been debating about applying for Federation membership.

As a faction in any form... I don't see it happening. Subfactions like the TOS Feds are more likely now.
Now... if they made a C-Store unlock for playable Cardassians... that might work.

I would rather see it be something more like a recruit event that allows you to make a Cardassian character in one of the existing factions. It would make sense in that your character might be a diplomatic gesture from the Cardassians to other factions an seeking alliances an help/aid. You could be merely a Cardassian that is one of the few groups of from the race to either attempt to join, or be accepted into the Academies of the two main factions.

The next faction needs to be completely different and not more of the same. So I'm hoping for playable Tholian.

    Same question, another month.

But no. It's unlikely it'll happen as there are already Cardassian ships in lockboxes.

I would rather have a completely new faction, one that is totally new, and not a current canon faction.

A whole faction might be too much to ask for. AoY-style mission block leading into Starfleet (can't imagine Cardies allying with Klingons) might work, with a bunch of new Cardassian ships on the C-store, and an official Cardassian race to choose. It would really be no different from my alien-gen Cardassian except his neck would look better, and he would have a more accurate uniform.

I would be happy with a C-Store unlock playable race, or simply adding them as an option, for FED, KDF, and ROM Factions. There's in canon reason for allowing it, too, as the Cardassians have worked/allied with all 3 Factions in some manner or another at some time.

    LONG POST INCOMING!

Well, if there ever was a time for a Cardassian/Dominion faction to appear in-game, the "Victory Is Life" expansion is the most sensible time to do it. If not then, then it'd probably never happen.

Mind you, it'd most likely follow the same blueprint as the Romulan and TOS factions.
    • First, you'd have to align with FED or KDF at level 10; Red/Blue team limitation is part of the base of the game, no way around it without pretty much rebuilding STO from scratch...which isn't gonna happen.
    • Then there's the limited ship selection: we'd get the usual kind of expansion ship pack with a T1-T5/T6 Hideki, Galor, Keldon, perhaps even a couple new Cryptic designs, or ones based off of old concept art for the shows. Here's a ship drawn up by John Eaves for STO when it was still under development by Perpetual, along with some other Cardy ships from canon (though most of those are just redresses of stock studio ship models) as potential options. Cryptic might if they're nice even make a few extra ships to fill in some key role gaps, like Science ship, Carrier, Dreadnought, etc., in the Cardassian ship selection. But they're not gonna go back and make Cardy-variants to add to every cross-faction ship pack in the game, nor can Cryptic start making 4-ship packs (12 for mega-bundles) for every new type of ship going forward; there's NO WAY that they have the time or the manpower to do that. So whatever Cardy ships come out around X4's release, that's it.
    • Cardys will have less (or none) of their own Duty Officers, much less costume options, a single bridge interior, maybe 5 species options max (Cardassian, Jem'Hadar, Vorta and Breen in C-Store, baby Changeling for lifers), perhaps a lvl 1-20 faction mission arc before getting mixed in with the other recycled FED faction-neutral story arcs. They'd be lucky to get a single social zone, probably Lakarian City or whatever the Cardassian capital city is supposed to be. No exclusive starbases, obviously; despite them having arguably the most iconic space station in all of Trek, it'd probably end up as FED/KDF fleet holding option rather than letting the Cardassians players have it.
    • And of course, the Cardy faction playerbase will eventually end up smaller than the Romulan playerbase, which is smaller than the Klingon base, and much smaller than the FED base. There's no two ways about it; the majority of folks are in STO to play act their own Captain Picard/Kirk/etc. adventures, not 'Captain Spoonhead' or Gul Dukat's long lost son. No amount of 'Gamma Recruitment Events' or "if you build it, they will come" blithe sentiments can change that. So there's little reason for Cryptic to invest much in the Cardy faction beyond the one expansion content drop.
    • Oh, and you definitely can't 'go evil' and join the True Way or the Dominion against the FED/KDF/ROM Alliance, and try to relive the 'good ol' days' of the Bajoran Occupation. Geko in the past has said that STO is about playing the good guys; that's why Romulans can't play as the Empire or the Tal Shiar, so Cardassians won't be able to play as the bad guys either.
Bottom line, if folks are expecting a full independent Cardassian faction, with absolute feature, ship number, and mission content parity with the FEDs, complete with 'dark side' play style, up to and including Gul Dukat-inspired Bajoran murder options >:) , they're plum out of luck.

Of course, personally I'd be fine with all of that. IMO, based on their historical capabilities, expecting Cryptic to deliver anything more than a 'Cardassian half-faction' is kinda ridiculous. Ultimately all I care about is being able to play a proper Cardassian captain with a proper Cardassian ship and crew; some special missions would be nice, but that's it.

As for the backstory about the Cardassians being forced to de-arm after the Dominion War, that's easily addressed. In 2409 (or 2410-11), the Alliance powers are dealing with conflicts on multiple fronts, the Borg, Undine, Elachi, Tholians, much less an entire other quadrant full of their own stuff; the Alliance is overextended, so they need more ships and crews to help maintain peace. Plus the Cardassians want to feel like they have a role to play on the galactic stage, besides just being the denigrated losers of a war from four decades prior. So the Federation and the Klingon Empire agree to amend the terms of the Treaty of Bajor, to allow the Cardassians a limited rearmament, under the following condition: Any Cardassian naval ships and crews operating outside of Cardassian space must serve under the auspices of either Starfleet or the KDF, subject to their rules and regulations. This gets around the Red/Blue faction limit, just like with the Romulans, and also explains why Cardassians eventually get folded into doing the FED/KDF/endgame mission arcs, and essentially act like FED/KDF for PvE/PvP.

How to deal with the Galors and Keldons previously given out to players through the Lockboxes? Those are 'surplus vessels' from the end of the Dominion War, as stated in the box that they come in; they're basically decades-old relics. A proper Cardy faction could get 'modern' Galors/Keldons with different BOff seatings, specializations, consoles, etc. Maybe the Infinity Lock Box could just stop giving out Galors/Keldons going forward, maybe not. Maybe Cardy players can even use the Infinity Lock Box to get their own Bird-of-Prey, like Dukat's. (Too much? :D ) Either way, I don't see why FED/KDF/ROM players having a chance at a few old-timey Galors/Keldons from a Lockbox should keep the Cardys from getting their own special versions of those ships in the C-Store.

no I don't want a cardassian faction. I do want a Gamma Quad faction....playable Jem'Hadar and Vorta. You could add a cardassian as one of their species like remans in the romulan arc.

You would face the same problems though I suppose where the ships for jemhadar are already there in lockboxes, so the same problems with cardassian ships are faced with jemhadar.

I suppose the joy of science fiction is that you can write it any way you like to justify it....the jemhadar ships in lockboxes are their old ships from the last war period, they have gone away back into the gamma quad and their new ships are all in the new tree.

Absolutely nothing about the Dominion interests me whatsoever, I'd very much would rather have a Cardassian faction as they do interest me. Also so many more Dominion ships are event/lockbox ships than there are Cardassian ships as lockbox ships that there isn't really much to work with without upsetting a whole lot of people. There's plenty of room to think up new Cardassian ships since they don't have a whole lot of known ships.

I think AOY mission block for klingons and Romulans 23c leading to their respective faction is more likely.

Cryptic already said that wont happen because Klingons and Romulans didn't show up in enough episodes, or have enough lore for that era, to make a story arc out of, which is why they didn't do it when AoY came out.

Yup, and I'm pretty sure they already said that they aren't going to do another mini-faction again either.

Right. At most there would be an AoY-style origin story "faction" with a T1 starter ship, a tutorial and a few early missions after which they join Fed or KDF and are treated as that faction from then on.

    They haven't ruled that out.

In-fact, they have said in the past that the Cardassians, Jem'Hadar, Ferengi, and Borg(Cooperative) are the only species with enough of a fanabse to possibly do a mini-faction for. So such an idea is still on the table.

I think people really shouldn't get their hopes up. I'm almost 100% positive there will be nothing added faction-wise this year.

I wouldn't mind a playable Cardassian faction if they would first pout fixing there product first, and fixing the Romulan problem with fewer ships than anyone else and forced to be either Federation or Klingon instead of Romulan player.
