I have turned out to be an avid ship collector, probably to a bit of a fault. All my characters have at least two (sometimes up to 4 or 5) ships that "fit" the theme I've chosen for them. Each character simply rotates through them occasionally.
But I also have several ships that sit unused (Dauntless and Nautilus for example), left behind as my characters' themes have evolved. I don't want those ships to go to waste, as I did spend money on them.
So I have resorted to rolling a new Science AOY character just so I can use those two ships again when he's at level 50. I'm not going to stress about it, just level him through the story when I don't have anything else to do.
Next up would be a new Romulan character to utilize my T6 Dreadnaught Warbirds (So my Rom engie can go back to using his Fleet Kara and Tac Command Battlecruiser.
What, if anything, do you do with your excess ships?
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Once the ships are registered with the Admiralty system, you don't need to keep them. Only thing Drydock is required for is ships that can't be reclaimed such as Lobi ships. Don't keep hold of C-Store and Event ships as they can be easily reclaimed.
My main has 30 active slots and been through 130+ ships. I have started to different builds that are themed to the original weapons. I don't follow the 'meta' as that's just boring, although upgrading everything is expensive. lol.

Exactly.
But I also use some ships for experimenting with different weapons and traits. As a result, I found nice combos that I probably wouldn’t have found otherwise.
Then there’s playing a ship just for the sake of playing and having fun.
I do this, too.
