What do you do with "excess" ships?

djf021djf021 Member Posts: 1,382 Arc User
I have turned out to be an avid ship collector, probably to a bit of a fault. All my characters have at least two (sometimes up to 4 or 5) ships that "fit" the theme I've chosen for them. Each character simply rotates through them occasionally.
But I also have several ships that sit unused (Dauntless and Nautilus for example), left behind as my characters' themes have evolved. I don't want those ships to go to waste, as I did spend money on them.

So I have resorted to rolling a new Science AOY character just so I can use those two ships again when he's at level 50. I'm not going to stress about it, just level him through the story when I don't have anything else to do.
Next up would be a new Romulan character to utilize my T6 Dreadnaught Warbirds (So my Rom engie can go back to using his Fleet Kara and Tac Command Battlecruiser.

What, if anything, do you do with your excess ships?

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

We need the admrility system upgraded to use these ships. So they can assist us on missions and maybe send them away on missions.

Keep several on active space status to store gear. Unlock traits and dry dock all remaining tier sixes. Dry dock any tier 5-U’s you might actually play with. Gather useful consoles and dismiss the rest. You get to keep admiralty cards for ships that have been dismissed.

Clear a spot in active then either use it or trash it immediately. It only needs to go in an active slot for admiralty purposes. I'm not buying any more slots.

Once the ships are registered with the Admiralty system, you don't need to keep them. Only thing Drydock is required for is ships that can't be reclaimed such as Lobi ships. Don't keep hold of C-Store and Event ships as they can be easily reclaimed.

My main has 30 active slots and been through 130+ ships. I have started to different builds that are themed to the original weapons. I don't follow the 'meta' as that's just boring, although upgrading everything is expensive. lol.

If I let myself, I could easily turn into a ship collector. I think I have an average of about 45 ships owned or used per each of my five chars. I do have a 'theme' ship or two for each of my chars which are either as canon as STO allows or are based on a particular Reputation. I keep my Active Roster Slots full for the extra gear storage. Any ship which I might have to purchase again(Lobi Store) goes into Drydock. Any remaining ships which I can Reclaim are discarded. I recently purged all of my chars of any ship or gear which I do not use regularly and keep around 'for someday'. Despite this, I've nearly filled all the gear slots on my Active Ships roster.

Ships that I have purchased, but have no immediate need to actually command them on any character are simply claimed then dismissed so that at least I can use them in the Admiralty System. Eventually I will get around to using those ships.

Leosa or Galas (the other is drydocked)
Vastam or Aelahl (the other is drydocked)
Morrigu or Dinaes (the other is drydocked)
    Lobi ships
Kara or Caprimul (the other is drydocked)
Mirror ship to paint the Malem, Morrigu, or Kara

If they're C-Store... commission and toss for Admiralty. Same with Account unlock. Otherwise its drydock or actually have available to use... or item storage.

Thanks for the responses, just curious if I'm the only crazy creating characters to justify owning ships :D Regardless, I'm slowly realizing I'll have more fun not stressing out about power leveling a toon.

You don't need to justify owning ships. Collecting is it's own reward. As it is, I pretty much just unlock the trait on ships then its gone (dismissed if reclaimable, drydock if not). Or for lower tier ships, just pick the Admiralty card and out right away.

C-store ships get discharged. Fleet and box ships go drydock since you have to PAY to get them back again if discharged. Plus I keep a few in active ship status to hold extra weapon sets and gear.

Use them in admiralty of course.

When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

I have a bunch of lockbox ships drydocked as well as a T5U Meshweaver, I am tempted to dump the weaver for space since I never really use it anymore and it doesn't have anything special about it when compared to my various other ships.

Your not alone, i have about 8 or 9 fed characters as a result of my collection of ships and im still not using at least 6.

Its why i wont buy anymore fed ships only a decent klingon or rommie ship.

    Exactly.

But I also use some ships for experimenting with different weapons and traits. As a result, I found nice combos that I probably wouldn’t have found otherwise.

Then there’s playing a ship just for the sake of playing and having fun.
