Option to slot for previous Winter Wonderland ship projects

Greetings all,

My apologies in advance if this has already been raised elsewhere in the forums, but I REALLY REALLY hope that cryptic read this...

I would like to get some opinions from players. I would like to suggest the option of slotting projects for ships previously available to the winter wonderland event every year during the winter wonderland event window. I missed out on the Breen Rezreth Dreadnought Cruiser, and the Chel Boarg and would LOVE to get my hands on those ships, especially the Rezreth. What I would suggest is to simply make the older projects available again alongside the newest one during the current and future winter events, and maybe do the same for summer ships. That way players who missed out on older ships at least have the option of a reclaim, and can grind for these say on an alt, while grinding for the current ship on a main, or whatever way players want to do it, or if at all. Indeed, I have several friends and fleetmates with enough alts to grind twice over if they so chose to!! I find it silly that these ships are unobtainable except through the phoenix system, but sometimes real life can and does get in the way of other things!

Please let me know your thoughts below, or you can pm me ingame @captaingforce

Sorry, OP, but that isn't going to happen now that we have the Phoenix Box promotion.

I'd love to see that happen as well.

So would I. But I agree with BMR, it ain't gonna happen. So won't stress over it either. Just collect phoenix boxes on the acct that missed them all since I just created it. That way I'll at least try to get her the ones she wants. Most specifically the Nandi.

Sorry, ain't gonna happen. That goes against Cryptic's decision to make event ship exclusive; you need to participate in the actual event to be able to earn vouchers towards the Event Ship.

The Phoenix Prize Pack was introduced to at least allow new players (or "old players") who missed the events to have a chance of claiming them even though it is on a per character basis. It is also provided a good mechanism to drain excess refined dilitihium from the economy to lower the Dil to Zen exchange rate.

That's great for some players, but I actually kinda like a high exchange rate because that means I could get more refined Dil for my buck. Everyone who wants a 500:1 Dil/Zen exchange rate raise you hand and shout out!!! (Raise my own hand)

This. Cryptic wants you to join the event when the event is happening.

If they allowed slotting multiple event ships, some people would skip 2017 figuring they'd just race twice a day in 2018. Then participation drops in 2017. For F2P games time logged in (for the player base as a whole) translates into sales, and time missed is lost revenue. Less money means they can't create as much new content, which then drops revenue even more, which continues the DOOM spiral downward.

So people not doing ice races this year could literally shut down STO! ;)

I agree that isn't likely to happen again. Cryptic did allow players to catch up on the missed event ships in a subsequent event a few years back, but switched over to drops that are specific to the current year. I assume that the decision was intended to create additional revenue.

Personally I also missed the Sar Theln and the Plesh Brek. While I wouldn't be complaining if they gave a second chance event run, with the introduction of the Phoenix box that's not going to happen. Personally I never agreed with the exclusivity argument but it is what it is.

The decision of switching over to drops that are specific for the current year so that people don't hoard the tokens on an alt and get it the first day of the event, not bothering to spend time in the wonderland.

I wish they would allow it as well, and I have all of them, so I have no personal stake in it happening. It wouldn't diminish the ones that I already have in any way if others could earn them now.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

I was never a fan of the exclusivity decision, but it is what it is and I understand why they did it. It's not really about diminishing the value of someone else's ship, though. It's about getting players to participate in the event, at the time the ship is offered. If you could run last year's ship this year, and this year's ship next year, then players could just skip this year entirely and run them all next year. That doesn't help for this year's metrics though. It's about getting you to login this year and anytime an event ship is offered. The account-wide unlock is the incentive to do so. It's fortunate that Cryptic decided to make them available again on a per character basis through the Phoenix Box, otherwise, players who miss out/sit out an event would have no chance to get them at all.

They kind of said it was about both when they announced the change.

"We want to maintain the exclusivity and collectability of the event ships from the Summer Event each year, and in order to do that we will be retiring the existing Risian Lohlunat Pearls."

I'm just providing my own feedback on that aspect of it. I understand them wanting us to play during the event each year to get that year's ship, it makes business sense.

Personally, I enjoy the little races you have to do to 'earn' the ships. I missed out on several Breen ships because I was uneasy about running on ice. Then I read some tips and tricks and tried it when the Rezreth came out. I've done the race ever since.

I also love the Flying High to get the Summer ship. Guess I'm easy to please and actually have fun during these Event ship 'grinds'. They're not such a grind to me. I'm looking forward to the Anniversary Event already.

As wonderful as the idea would be, they unfortunatly chose to add them to the Phoenix Box and are unlikely to change that. According to others on the forum, stripped of their Account Unlock status (because TRIBBLE anyone unfortunate enough to miss an event).

The Phoenix Box would be an acceptable way to get them if not for the last part.

Oh if only they actually unlocked for accounts through the phoenix. Shame that will never happen. They took weeks to even consider giving us account unlocked event weapons, but hey, one can dream.

Also, if they have to keep everything stuffed inside the phoenix box, can they at least update it for once? I don't even think they've added any ships since it first came out, and that was quite a while ago.

What would be great is upping the chance of getting winter ships specifically from the pheonix lockbox and having the ability to get these boxes free throughout the winter event by random chance from monster drops like the snowman overlord, kramp'ihri and snorg as an addition to the new years free ship for 1k autographs for that way.

this way with a higher chance than say 5% on Ultra Rare or 1% on epic, it goes up 10% on both ends with a gauranteed token of either one (per account character) that is bound and can not be converted into a lower form past the grade it is at to avoid getting 2 UR for example. this way you can buy the ship and once the token is earned and locked in the default drop rates apply back at 5% and 1%.

also the ship gotten can't be traded and once it is used on one character it automatically account unlocks if it wasn't already done so.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

You do know that if you have the older project already slotted you can complete it with this year's 'vouchers'.

Otherwise, sniff sniff, why should the mere unwashed peasants be able to partake in such exclusivity. As that well known Forum Ferengi has pointed out, we just love to revel in the rarity and exclusivity of our digital possessions (of the day). Yeah, right. A crock of bs if I ever heard it.

It is just like removing the Reputation Turn-in of Marks or Elite Marks for Dilitium from enjoying the effect of Bonus Dilitium Weekends. As was stated by the EP, this way the Turn-ins are 'Special' all year long.

I get chills up and down my spine with how 'special' I feel.

I get that Cryptic wants to get players to participate in the event this year. I just think it's really sad that "you can't get it next year" is the best sales pitch they can put up for the grand prize. Usually, the top prizes of big events are good enough people want them ASAP even if they know they'll rerun at some point.

Especially considering the STO we have today tends to attract impatient players for whom waiting 25 days for the ship is already too much. If they don't want the ship Now, being able to get it next year or not isn't going to make one lick of difference to them.

The kind of players who are affected by the exclusivity shtick, won't start playing the game at all now that they've already missed a lot of stuff. The game isn't really ship-collector friendly in the first place, what with the faction restrictions it's impossible to collect all ships at once.

The funny thing is, there is a way to satisfy both 'sides', as it were. To explain, I will copy my post from a similar thread:
A while back, I had opined that one should be able to, for instance, get any summer event ship at any summer event, with the caveat being that the ships have a special hull pattern which is only available in its debut year. That would be even easier to implement now that vanity-only shields exist.

Hypothetical future example: the Summer 2018 event ship is the Vorgon cruiser (to round out the trifecta). Under this proposed system, the 'package' you get from the 2018 event contains a pair of special requisition packs - one for the ship itself, and one for a vanity shield. Running the project in any subsequent year only gives the ship.

I cannot recall hearing any good reason why this is not the case: 'metrics' as an argument doesn't even get out of the gate (we're still talking about a project fueled by a daily event); and 'exclusivity' is handled by the vanity shield.

Of course, if folks want to try their luck with the Phoenix Prize packs, that would still exist as an option.

Then people would just start threads like this about wanting to get the vanity shield :)

The problem is if someone slotted for a project and only got 960 done but because for some reason or another they weren't able to play the game during the remaining days of the event, they won't be able to use the next years vouchers for it and they are then screwed out of the ship which they were so close to unlock.

You can also use this year's 'Vouchers' to complete a previous Project in the example of 960/1000 given above.

That's right. If you keep the ship slotted, you can finish it out the next year and have another toon run for the new ship.

Just my opinion, but since getting the Nandi from a Phoenix box, I hate it. It's obvious whomever designed it flipped a existing skin, made a few cosmetic changes and went, ta-da, Ferengi T6. It looks like it's flying backwards.

Interesting. That means, the exclusivity doesn't stop players who may want to "skip this event and get the ship next year" after all. They just have to log in one of these days to slot the project and they're good to go.

The only effect of the exclusivity really is then, that new players are excluded.

Really effective incentive there, Cryptic. :disappointed:

The idea of exclusivity has always been about being there at the time of the event, though. If you are around to slot the project, then you are at least there for that much of it. But honestly, how long can anyone realistically kick that can down the road before they actually have to either finish the project or cancel it entirely?
