Not happy with this. Once again, Cryptic has taken a half-attempt at an "expansion". Frankly, I would really appreciate it if Cryptic would stop treating each "season" as an expansion, and treat it as they used to - a season. Which brings me to my next point - when are you folks going to actually bother making more than ONE featured episode? I remember, back when the game actually had content, that expansions and seasons had multiple episodes, and decent content. You actually had stuff to do. Ever since the story for Delta Rising finished, it seems Cryptic's taken a lazy approach to developing content for this game with one featured episode a month, and almost nothing else for the "expansion," save for fluff, and supposed fixes.

This is why Star Trek Online is dying. If you guys at Cryptic aren't up to the task of maintaining and creating content for this game, then perhaps it's time to either hang it up, or sell the game to a game developer that can actually PROVIDE players with real content.

I'm yawning in anticipation and still with a bag full of ephoos. Don't know how exciting vanilla pvp where we are all equal will prove to be fun, but the thought of everyone holding foam bats slugging it out comes to mind.

Competitive PvE is the worst of both worlds. You can't kill the opposing team to stop them from accomplishing their objectives, so it comes down to each team grinding harder to make the other team get less rewards. WTH is that? What's the attraction there? Is this some kind of frog boiling maneuver on the road to turning STO into a MOBA or something?

And then they make a reputation out of that. Just... what. Like we needed another reputation, or to waste dev time on something pretty much guaranteed to be a flaming wreck. That sector space revamp you guys did? Yeah, still autopiloting into stars, because moving the nav points is apparently too much work. AoY? Still getting that communicator lid in the floor on beam out, thanks for asking. Lighting 2.0? "Some areas may be too light or dark" ... apparently forever. Now they've added the charming monster faces when not using 2.0, so Space Barbie endgame is broken too.

    Player Potential? lololol PASS!

The War Games are going to be the marks-yielding queues for the new rep.

Oh man, I hope you're wrong about that. Or that if you are correct, there will be other ways to earn those marks because some people will not take part in anything that even remotely smells of PvP.

I'm willing to give it a shot just to see how it goes, but if it ends up becoming a nacelle measuring contest, I'll quietly leave and wait to get marks for that rep through events.

You know that's exactly what it will be.

Season 12 really started when we got the first Lukari Episode at the end of October. Look at the wiki, they consider that as part of Season 12 as well so what they labeled Season 12 at the end of January was really 12.5.

    For a mumbly-jumbly CBS/Paramount analogy.

Let's consider the AoY Expansion to be the equivalent of the Star Trek Beyond movie. That Expansion released in July. Now by the Paramount/CBS rules they could not release the new Series (Star Trek Discovery) until SIX months after the movie. In our situation the Season is the equivalent of the Series, so you have to wait until the end of January before you can declare a new Season. So we had the official Season 12 at the end ofJanuary but the pseudo Season 12 started at the end of October.

If you understood all that, you should either go work for PWE/Cryptic or CBS/Paramount. :)

This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

Sounds very interesting! I'm looking forward to this release, especially the Player Potential system, was long overdue to hopefully limit some players from playing Elite queues! Good idea Cryptic, thanks :)

If other people are better than me I won't do it at all. Madness

From my perspective, it's a pointless activity trying to compete with a player who is using a trick build and has researched/practiced all the ways to get an advantage.
That's why I don't do anything in any game designed to make players fight each other to the detriment of one party who will be designated "losing participant".
    Even in Competitive PvE.

Case in point, the First Contact queue, I just stand there, do nothing and wait for it to end, collect my hologram token and leave.
I have no interest in playing the game, because it is Competitive PvE.
Like someone's running to the bonus extra special parts vendor or whatever to get all purple parts to win 1st place in the contest.
And if there wasn't a event prize box connected to it, I wouldn't be doing it at all!
I certainly won't be doing it after my mains collect their prizes.

Dear God no. But yeah, it's going to be time travel. I guess we'll be seeing more of Daniels (Matt Winston) who I think does some of the best voice work in the game.

In regards to the PVP or competitive PVE I'm in. Not sure how they'll do the matchmaking though. In some games it's the level of ship so maybe that could sort of work here. But that will require a lot of coding since two escorts could have different set ups with one having epic consoles and the other having entry level equipment. Probably be much simpler if they just match up based on players. Use a World of Tanks style grading system that is based on win rate, damage done etc. This way each team will get some p2w players who buy ships to get consoles and spend real life money on their builds. It's like that in most pvp games I've played and works fine. Looking forward to trying it out here.

We have the 'Yesterday's War' Arc to stuff these one-off Time Travel Episodes into.

After having not played STO for coming upto 10 months, only because I have no computer, I'm really looking forwards to playing again with this new expansion!

I'm looking forward to the stats and effects on class specific sets. This is an excellent opportunity to revamp old 3 piece space sets and make them the class specific sets. There's no reason to invent something completely new when the wheel is already out there ready to spin across reputation trees.

Can't wait to play through new storylines, however few in number they may be.
  • redwren89redwren89 Member Posts: 257 Arc User
I hope the class specific sets will faithfully reflect the different class functions, especially reflecting the new rebalance updates. For example, I hope engineers get further power benefits onto of healing and tank. I also hope science gets more drains, controls with lesser heals than the engineer, and I hope that tactical gets more dmg.

The class specific sets could also be synergistic with ship class. For example, there could be set bonuses for tactical set boosting cannons and torpedoes in an escort, engineer set boosting power levels and command array in a cruiser, science set boosting maybe sensor analysis or whatever.

It's like the ice-racing in the winter event, only with spaceships.

From my perspective, PvP is anything where you have compete against another player and they can defeat you.
Just because they can't harm you doesn't mean it isn't PvP.

I hate the ice racing in Winter Wonderland, to the extreme I won't do it at all!
The First Contact queue, I just stood by the workbench, did nothing until it ended and purposefully turned away from the rockets when they launched because I found it that abhorrent!
Personally, I think the First Contact event was just a test of the CPvE system before it actually goes live.

So Cryptic can include all the CPvE content they want, nothing will ever get me to participate!
Simply because I don't approve of making more ways for players to compete against each other.

As for the reputation in this release, I'm just going to find whatever Choice of Marks missions exist and use it to get the required marks instead.

Oh, temporal shenanigans are coming... however, I understand they'll have nothing to do with the Lukari, but rather a certain infamous blonde. Besides, why would one even need to work time travel into the Lukari/Tzenkethi story arc? It's not needed to explore the Lukari's past, not with that whole devastated planet just waiting to be explored.

Where is my Dominion faction? Where is the Dominion Rep even?

Actually, that's one of the first thoughts that crosses my mind each new expansion announcement.
The other one is where is our Cardassian faction?
And I'm still cranky because Delta Rising didn't bother giving us all the major DQ species as playable Captain options.
From my point of view, all new Expansions need to put aside until all three of those changes have been implemented.
Just giving out new Reputations all the time isn't really a good update at all.[/quote]

Seasons aren't technically Expansions. By now, we've had three Expansions in the game which are usually considered to be an Expansion because they offer a chunk of episodes in one big update, whereas Seasons are smaller updates that usually are released with one episode to start things off, with more planned as they see fit. Lets consider something for a minute here.

    1) From what sense do we want a Dominion faction? If it's a playable faction, it would be hard to envision since the Changelings would not be playable, Vorta don't usually do the fighting themselves so that would be out, and the Jem'hadar are essentially male clones so they would have limited customized looks for them. Not at all good makings of a playable faction.

    2) A cardassian faction would make more sense, but would need to be an actual expansion since that's how every faction so far has been added, aside from Klingons and the Federation.

    3) Geko said a while back that when they were working on Delta Rising. They started working on a mechanic for Borg ships to make playable ones, meaning at one point they were toying with a playable Borg Cooperative faction, but abandoned it in favor of it being an expansion that focused on pushing the extent of endgame farther out. We may still one day go back to something like a Borg Cooperative, even if it is a mini faction like TOS Federation was.

Season 10 was really the last time we had a season launch with more than one episode at launch. Before that, Season Two was the only season that was launched with more than one episode out of the gate. All other seasons either had 1 episode at launch or no episodes at all at launch.

    - Season 2 gave the old Undine Episodes, and gave the Klingons some faction only episodes. They later added the Breen Cold War series and the Devidian episodes.
    - Season 3 introduced the Cloaked Intentions series of episodes.
    - Season 4, being the season of content drought, obviously had no episodes.
    - Season 5, the f2p transition season, didn't have any episodes at launch but added The 2800 series as the final 5 episode series they would do. They also released "Alpha" as a Klingon standalone episode.
    - Season 6, no new episodes were introduced, not even with the Tholians who were introduced here.
    - Season 7 no new episodes at launch, but "Temporal Ambassador" started a trend of them introducing better quality episodes from time to time.
    - Season 8 introduced "mini episodes" with the Dyson Sphere arc, while adding "A step Between Stars" to the line up as the 4th anniversary episode. We also got an entire polish of the Klingon War arc, effectively making them fresh episodes in regards to quality.
    - Season 9 started the trend of a new season launching with an episode, with this one being "Surface Tension" while we got a revamp of the Borg and Undine episodes which essentially combined two arcs and dumped out one that wasn't really up to par to saving at the time for cross faction play.
    - Season 10 is notable for the fact that they gave us several new episodes throughout.
    - Season 11 launched with an episode but we had less than the previous season, but we know that was because they were working on a new expansion.
    - Season 12 is shaping up to be a two episode season at this point, but it is also the shortest season we've gotten in all of the 7 years the game has been around.

We also have to figure on why STO has released fewer episodes a season and why we're left waiting sometimes one to two months for another episode: The quality of the episodes has increased greatly. The price we pay for the increase in quality is that it takes a longer amount of time to make everything. Since everything is voice acted now with Trek actors, they have to ask themselves "who are we able to get for this episode that we can adapt the episode for?"

Example: Let's do the most recent episode, "Of Signs and Portents" with our Lukari friend Kuumaarke. They were obviously bringing Kipleigh Brown in to do that part, but they also wanted another Trek actor. Everyone thought it would be Nicole de Boer to reprise her role as Ezri Dax, but instead they threw in Tony Dodd. This is them working with who they can get, and this may be why the episodes usually take so long.

Would you want to wait longer for them to release more episodes?

Sounds a bit complicated, and would generate a ton of complaints to the effect of "why are you locking particular careers to particular ships?" The more applicable part would be the whole bit about the sets boosting stats that were inline with the intended role of each class. Scientists get stuff with drain/control/exotic/sci cd reduction. Engineers get healing/threat control/power management/eng cd. Tacs get projectile damage/energy damage/evasion/something other than tac cd. Sounds more feasible and builds off existing stats rather than, I imagine, some under-the-hood work to tie bonuses to ship categories which are often getting chopped and changed anyway.
