Concerning ships crew.

I'm not talking about Boffs or Doffs but the actual crew you see walking or working on your ship. Has there ever been any definitive answer as to whether at a later date we could use the tailor to design their uniforms? If not I would like to know if any of you have any opinions or suggestions on this. It just seems to me a little silly that on the bridge the npc's have different uniforms from myself and my Bridge Officers.

And before I get chastised for it, I did run a search but those threads are very old, so to avoid a "Necro Infraction" I made a thread.

I already had to fill several certificates and forms in many copies just to get the permission for my Boffs to wear the costumes they want without facing several hearings. And that's not including all the credits, latinum and lobi crystals I had to spend since only I, the captain, can buy them those costumes.

Now you want me to go through all of this for my 2,000 other crew members? OH HECK NO!

It was discussed in pre-PWE days. If I recall correctly and if I understand it, the ship (and by extention, Starbase) crew NPCs are picked from a pre-generated pool of, for want of a better discription, "extras" with a shortlist of uniform sets. To customise each crew to the whims of individual players without it affecting every other faction NPC you see would require a prohibitive amount of resources.

I regret that I can't find the source for this at the moment.

I would like to see that, but as the both posters above me said, technical limitations prevent this from happening. "Your" ship interior isn't really "yours", it's a generic map of the type of interior you chose. The only thing that's dynamic is the implementation of your BOFFs into the scene, and even that doesn't work most of the time.

What I would actually like to see is the ship's NPC crew being drawn from your DOFF roster. Associate the DOFF card to a predefined NPC model complete with uniform, assigned department, and name. Then have those models randomly generate onboard as you walk the halls. It's not a perfect way of customizing the general crew population, but it gives us more control than we have now.

Well I was thinking that since the ship npc's have almost the same body type that it wouldn't be too much of a chore that they could somehow add something like this to the tailor . So say for example you wanted to add a Jupiter Uniform to all the npc's aboard your ship, you would get three character models (Engineering, Tactical, Science) and apply the uniform to those characters so that all the tactical officers would be wearing that model as well as Science and Engineering. I should point out I have no clue as to the mechanics of this game and what is possible, impossible , or difficult to do. I do however rely and appreciate the feedback that has been given! :)

That would be impossible given how many Doffs are things like Xindi aquatics, and other species that have no NPC model, and simply wouldn't work as an NPC walking around the map.

If it were possible, though, I'd visit my ship interior more often just to watch my Horta miners scooching around, wrecking the floors.

(For some reason, they seem to be really keen on playing Poker whenever I host a game. Maybe they'd mostly stick to the crew lounge.)

Ideally, I'd love to see a Ship Interiors revamp. There you could have a cetacean ops with Xindi Aquatics. That aside, simple solution is if a DOFF, such as Xindi Aquatics, do not have a model associated with it, then they simply do not spawn on the map. I'm not suggesting that ALL of your DOFFs spawn on the map, but your DOFF roster supplies the list from which they're chosen.

to say nothing of the fact that most doffs are randomly generated; such a thing, if it were ever implemented (which isn't likely), would have to only use unique doffs...i.e. the ones that have those little quotes in their info window

and how would it handle something like having 2 or more of the same doff in your roster? you gonna be having clones walking around the ship? which technically would work fine for dr. sibak, since he himself is a clone, but everyone else it would just be too weird

Yes, this particular artist's ideas have been discussed before in other Interiors threads. And while I think it would be awesome, especially considering the level of customization involved, I believe that's the very thing that would prevent it from being done. Personally, I think the best route to improved Starship Interiors is to implement them like Fleet Starbases: the same map for all players, differentiated by Faction, with unlockable features via projects, and the possibility of adding decks over time, similar to Fleet Holdings. The generic layout could allow for easier setup of missions inside the ship, which could incentivize investing the time and resources into the revamp due to increased usefulness.

Randomly generated? I thought most DOFFs were listed in the wiki and were unique. Either way, most DOFFs look like clones of one another anyway, only having different names, jobs, etc.

I suppose a system could prevent spawning more than one of the same DOFF. As it is, though, we have clones walking around our ships, so it wouldn't be much different, even if you had multiples of the same DOFF. The point would be in giving some level of control as to the make up of your crew. I don't know that they could ever give us complete control over uniforms, but something like this might be possible.

Also, maybe give us some control of the number of crew that spawn. Sometimes I feel like the hallways are just too crowded.

Considering the current ship NPC population is already randomly generated clones...it would handle it exactly like it does now.

What would be nice is if you could design a standard shipboard uniform the same way you can a fleet uniform, and have the NPCs wear that. Or at least give us a click-down list of a few options. I'd also like the opportunity to select things like species and gender options from a checkbox list. Unfortunately, the current development staff seems to have completely abandoned the concept of ship interiors as a part of their space barbie options. That's a shame, because there's definitely a demand for it as the request for more interior customization and things to do inside the ship is one that comes up often, and player housing is a moneymaker for other games.

Excellent ideas. And agreed. STO's version of player housing IS the Starship Interior. I just wish they'd give us more where that's concerned.

Ship interior as it is now is not player housing. The best you can do with it is choose a bridge and a corridor. And for anything that isn't a standard Fed or KDF ship, not even that.

What I meant by that is, if we're to be given some version of player housing like other MMOs have, then Ship Interiors is the logical place for it. Some have argued for an apartment on Earth or Qo'nos or New Romulus, but we're ship captains. Home is on board our ship. :)

True. But that would basically require them to remove all the bazillion custom mini-interiors then non-Fed/KDF ships have because it's too much work building full interiors for all of them.

Whereas giving people housing on a planet or station would allow them to build one map for everyone to use.

Heck, we have or can have all sorts of BOFFs. Why not just let them be the ones that wander around the corridors and occupy the static positions in sick bay, engineering, etc? We really don't need the corridors crowded the way they are now. Just replace the generic crew with all of our BOFFs. Assign static positions to the Department Heads. Others can rotate, but be based on career. Keep the bartender and cook. Then let any remaining BOFFs spawn and walk the corridors.
