This game is an story MMO. What myself, and my friends want is branching story base off choice. That has been done in mmos. That is also the spirit of Star Trek. Riker and Picard don't handle things the same. Even Q has showed what would happen if they did things in another way.
So what you want is Sub par star trek MMO. That is cool and that is on you. What we are saying is the game could be tons better. Also from what I was told this game might as well be a single player game. Lets not pretend like this mmo did well with this design. You might like it how it is.
Except they haven't. MMOs with story choices always find some way to negate your choices in the long run because no developer has the time or budget to add fully dynamic and branching story to MMOs
Guild Wars 2 does it
TOR does it
Even single player RPG like Mass Effect, and Witcher, and Deus Ex, do it.
The only person wanting a sub-par game is yourself, because you want a game that doesn't, and can't exist.
Also, most modern MMOs are largely designed to be able to be played alone, since developers know that you can't always find a group.
With a game like this. I don't see why it can't be done and not be THAT hard to do.
What you say matters.
1) You talk your way out of a fight beam down to a planet to figure out what is going on.
2) You act like a jerk and say Stand down you are in fed space. Starting a space battle
3) You make a bad choice the ship you was trying to save gets blown up, starting a space battle and giving you a distress call on the planet forcing you to do both.
I see no reason for this game story or engine can't do things like this. This game very design is base off the show where the quest are like the tv show.
You do realize how much more time and effort would have to go into the game to do something like that...it isn't a simple change like you *think* it would be.
Besides...have you even payed attention to some of the people the main factions have been at war with?
Maybe if we sat down at had a little talk with the Undine before they almost obliterated ESD...they wouldn't have done it...maybe if we said please they wouldn't have sent a planet destroyer to Qo'nos?
Maybe if Sela just apologized we could have avoided the Iconian war?
Maybe if we flash a smile and ask them if we can all get along, the Tzenkethi will stop using proto-matter and their tests?
As others have said, STO follows DS9 more than TOS or TNG...yes at times STO can be combat heavy...but where would be the fun of talking yourself out of anything that isn't a major confrontation? You don't want to fight and just get a mission over with? Then that isn't for story...that is just to get out of something quick,
Wait what?
Even Deep Space nine did not fight every time. Also, who says that I want to be able talk out of things each time? How you talk through stuff can make you beam to planets to stations or space combat.
Also "Time and effort" this game could use TONS more of that.
To answer the question on what we playing now. Right now we just waiting on the VR star trek game. Some of our friends still does not have VR so we waiting on them to get it.
Also, we play some table top star trek games, and our main focus right now is Elite Dangerous.
Because there was so much talking with the Dominion?
You love SFC 3 and WoW...it sounds like you and your friends enjoy easy super casual games...STO takes some investments when compared to those games.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power

I just finished binge-watching DS9. It held up well, but it's true that in seasons 5-7 people die in pretty much every episode, anywhere from 1 or 2 up to tens of millions.

I wonder did you just watch the cliff notes of deep space nine? Them dressing up as Klingons talking way out of things,
You mean the episode where they were about to kill Gowron and ended up killing someone else instead? Also killing 2 guards along the way to that fight? Yes, in DS9 they sometimes did not murder everyone in their path.
STO has similar episodes, like the original Doomsday weapon story where you are disguised as Klingons, and one last year where you are disguised as Romulans. In both cases you can avoid fighting some of the time.

So they murdered the ambassador.
Not before trying other things, and Sisko clearly was hoping he could fool him. If the ambassador could have been fooled things could have played out in other ways. Even Sisko was upset with himself for how things turned out, but knew deep down he had to do whatever it takes to win the war.

Yes...because attempting to assassinate the chancellor or assassinating romulan senator was so peaceful?

Yes because Sisko at the start planned on murdering the ambassador right? Also you are a moron if you think I said it all had to be peaceful. The very fact that you can't think outside of the box, makes me understand why you are happy with this game.

Wow...you're right...how could I be so foolish...them getting rid of a few things of currency when the game is still filled with over a couple dozen other types of currency is so impressive.
I guess if STO got rid of Latinum and just moved all of the latinum based items over to the dilithium store that what make such a huge change in the game!

Yet again I got to put you in your place with more facts.
Wow got rid of almost all the currency in the game, and went with just 1 in Legion. The rest of it does not play a part in the game.
It's a really big stretch to call "In the Pale Moonlight" DS9's "most famous episode" its not even an especially good episode with that S31 schlock in it. The same S31 that tried to commit genocide, that made deals with enemies of the Federation that left thousands dead, and more. Not to mention that DS9 is the only Trek series that let a captain off scot free after he violated a weapons ban treaty signed by every major power in the franchise.
That is your two cents, but here is what myself and my friends saw with Pale Moonlight and why many fans loved it.
It made Sisko look human. TNG problem was, they went around tried to make aliens more human. The humans always the best. Rise above all the hate, blah blah. Now they go around follow the rules when back was pushed to the wall, It pretty much showed Kirks way of bending the rules, and even breaking them was pointless. Picard was so skilled that he could follow the rules to the mark and still make a happy ending. Only once or twice did he break orders, and that was after the borg messed with his head.
Sisko on the other hand tried to follow the rules, and failed. Playing up to a murder to happen. He did not report it to starfleet when the other captains would have. My point is that, TNG the crew and captain was boring perfect. DS9 captain was human.

I'm sorry...but unless I'm on a trip I can clearly see more than one currency. This is from a newer max level character...and those timewarped badges count as well as I just earned them yesterday, if they got rid of all the currency then why does the game have a currency tab?

You're not alone. In my experience Delta Rising expansion had a huge fall-out, followed by a small boosts of other new players some of which stayed, but the decline continues. Empty armadas, friends lists full of people offline, long wait on STF queues, fewer zones on major social hubs like New Romulus Command, fewer fly-ins of people acquiring ships, and the EC exchange stagnates for a ton of items.
I agree, the focus on combat and destroying things at the expense of other things like team work, tanking, healing, debuffs, diplomacy, exploration, PvP, open world maps is cast by the side. There's zero point for say a support build or a drain build since it's simply less DPS being added making the content last longer. It's mob after mob of 'epic battles.' There's no variety, no use for attack vectors except those hard-scripted like the Breach 'follow this path or run into an invisible wall', cloaks that serve little purpose, consoles that gimp ships, and excessive focus on Cryptic-designs that are way overpowered over traditional canon stuff.
The game looks nothing like ST on screen with layers upon layers of really neat effects that can't be turned down or switched off, and no they don't help to see what abilities are currently being used or active since almost all of the time everyone's spamming everything on everyone where you can't even see your own ship.
The pace of the game is truly not as I remember it pre-DR with power creep giving every ship the ability to do everything and self-sustain anything. Using the 'wrong' gear is really punishing even if it is canon and that's how the ship is meant to be used.
Content being eternally broken is another major issue that's putting me off from binge playing as I used to. Powers don't activate reliably. This is extremely frustrating. They haven't been able to fix this in years. Years. Only one patch do I ever remember clearly them talking about lowering their refresh rates, which may have been a little ban-daid to help the extreme resource-hogging interface. Effects rob more FPS, so much so that even today I see my brand new custom build PC get crippled to 35 FPS when popping certain new abilities, and this is nothing new as there used to be long-standing issues like kemocite use.
I could go on, but the list of broken ships at the moment that hasn't been fixed despite two attempts with separation ships that we paid for (or someone paid for in order for the Zen to appear in game) including promo ships alongside half-broken separation pet mechanics that too were never fixed, topped off by ground nerfs like stealth module going from unlimited to a short cool-down sub-par ability that's outclassed by other abilities like ambush kit, plus an incoming space abilities 'balancing' really tops it off that it's not getting better, only worse.
I'm sorry...but unless I'm on a trip I can clearly see more than one currency. This is from a newer max level character...and those timewarped badges count as well as I just earned them yesterday,
Do you have trouble reading? Clearly you do. I said that the current content they only have 1 thing that matters Gold when it comes to upgrading your gear.
What you list is not the same thing, and not even used in the same way as in STO. Your example is bad.
You and your friends do not equal the majority of fans and even if you did it would not change a thing as I have never given half a d.a.m.n. about majority opinions. As for the actual demographics that are out there, I've not seen one single "best episodes" list for DS9 or Trek in general that includes In the Pale Moonlight, though I have seen it in some "worst of" lists.
James Kirk got court martialled for the supposed death of 1 officer & treated like s.h.i.t. by his fellow officers while Sisko gets off without even a hearing for using a Biogenic weapon against an inhabited planet (For the Uniform) and its utter bovie fecal matter.
Do I care about the majority of fans? I am speaking for myself and my friends. We have ours. I think of yours as about as much as you think of mine. Next to nothing.

Except it's exactly the same? Most of those currencies I can use to purchase or upgrade gear...what did you used to do with honor? Gee...I don't know...use it to purchase PvP gear!
Plus who is using gold to upgrade their gear? You only use gold to upgrade crafted gear...which isn't like crafted gear in STO...in STO some of the best weapons are crafted gear...except it isn't like that in WoW...crafted gear is throw away gear...beginner end game gear...your true gear upgrades come from loot drops.
So please...stop with the lies...I've proven you wrong. These tokens and currencies function much like the various ones in STO...and if you're talking about simply buying basic stuff...then WoW has gold and STO has Energy Credits.

So you are going to down play crafting gear? You are going to ignore marks in this game? On the very first page I saw someone else posting about how stupid marks are in this game.
Crafting gear scales with each patch, and gold can upgrade it to be better than LFR quality. Not only that, but lets you control the stats you want. 120.000 gold can get you full set of gear enough for raiding.
You can't do that with any other money than gold. Enough said. Good day.

No...I'm speaking the truth about crafted gear...it's okay gear to get you started...it isn't gear that will last you forever like some of the crafted gear in STO. There is a reason why people look down at LFR...it's raiding for dummies...it's autopilot raiding. No one who takes raiding even the least bit seriously (I.E. anyone who raids any of the other 3 more advanced levels of raiding) is going to be using crafted gear once they start raking in raiding gear.
I'm not ignoring marks...your whole put was how WoW eliminated all currencies...well marks are a currency...you use them to purchase items and gear just as you do with the currencies I showed from WoW...

I see no reason for this game story or engine can't do things like this.
Based off your years of software development experience, mainly focused on game engines, no doubt?
Yes, sure, STO could be better. Donuts could be better. Brussels Sprouts could be better. But, as the famous Roman philosopher once put it: est id quod est. This is what we have.
Keep in mind that while the "multiple choice option" style might make for a better experience, it could actually make the game smaller, because it has to run in just under 4GB of RAM. This isn't a 64-bit game. Adding more variations to all the missions means that there's going to be a lot more (slow) disk I/O to get everything crammed into place. Three times the choices would lead to 1/3 and overall story to the content on a mission.
I don't think it would fit the genre. There wasn't, and will never be, any negotiating with the Borg, the Undine, or the Iconians. The several missions we have that do follow the model--which occur during the Cardassian/Bajoran arc and the Iconian arc--aren't really all that interesting, at least not compared to what follows when things go wrong.
Point of order: how would a team get through an option A, option B, option C sort of mission story line? That sounds more suited to solo play, or maybe just something people who like to spend time arguing in a chat window would like to play.
Still, if you think Star Trek: The Negotiator has legs, by all means get hold of Shatner and then call the legal team at Priceline to tell them of your intent to violate their intellectual property. It could sell.
(In the back of my mind there's an alarm going off that says this is just a slow train-wreck of a troll thread.)
Everyone who asks me about STO, I give the same advice/answer: "If you really like Star Trek, you will love the game."
The rest is self-explanatory.
That is some pretty bad logic.
Could say the exact same thing about you and your friends logic...I mean assassinations and bombings are peaceful resolutions to you...so you aren't exactly the most qualified to question someones logic.

Because there was so much talking with the Dominion?
You love SFC 3 and WoW...it sounds like you and your friends enjoy easy super casual games...STO takes some investments when compared to those games.
Um yes there was so much talking with the Dominion. It sounds like you need to go back and watch the Star trek.
Maybe if you consider the Jem Hadar doing most of their *talk* with their weapons...
Actually Anet GW2 has ZERO choice of player decision the pve its has story driver has STO(STO is understandable), even when was a vote between Kiel and Evon Gnashblade, the result was already being writed as if Kiel won, so players vote was just a fake and a placebo, that was the most decisional stuff taht game ever had.
I wonder did you just watch the cliff notes of deep space nine? Them dressing up as Klingons talking way out of things, Even in war, Big choices are made that can even be good or bad. Heck trying to fool.
Deep Space Nine most famous eps "In the Pale Moonlight" Shows what Sisko tried to do, how it went wrong through just planning and talking.
At this point I think the OP is just making stuff up and hoping that there are only hard core star trek fans here...I've played WoW and I know what he said about WoW removing currency and tokens is complete BS...and if what he said about GW2 is BS...then we have a whole lot of bull plop from him.
You are the most clueless person I have ever seen. It takes a real living in your own world type person who clearly does not read because I mention Secret world not GW 2. Other people said GW 2.
Also wow got rid of JP/VP and Honor points. You clearly not only understand Deep Space Nine, but also don't know MMOS well.
Not before trying other things, and Sisko clearly was hoping he could fool him. If the ambassador could have been fooled things could have played out in other ways. Even Sisko was upset with himself for how things turned out, but knew deep down he had to do whatever it takes to win the war.
Either you're a troll or a compulsive liar...either are someone not worth arguing with...you point out two *peaceful* or *communicating* episodes where people ended up dead...
Yes...because attempting to assassinate the chancellor or assassinating romulan senator was so peaceful?
So I put you in your place with facts, and you want to live in your own world by calling me a liar?
Yes because Sisko at the start planned on murdering the ambassador right? Also you are a moron if you think I said it all had to be peaceful. The very fact that you can't think outside of the box, makes me understand why you are happy with this game.
Wow...you're right...how could I be so foolish...them getting rid of a few things of currency when the game is still filled with over a couple dozen other types of currency is so impressive.

Strange, it seems quite logical to me.
