So,I bought a laptop last December. Now when I bought it I made sure that it would run Star Trek Online, and it did just fine till today when I did a catch up patch. See, The laptop is for when I travel and doesn't get used for Star Trek while I am at home and can use my desktop. Anyways I patch it all up and engage. I get a popup saying my graphics card needs to be updated. Now why in the hell does a 3 month old computer now need a better graphics card. I know what I bought wasn't a top of the line gaming computer but it should have lasted longer then that. It's a Dell Laptop with Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 card. Anyone know what's going on?

What specifically does the popup say? I ask because there's a popup I and many others get that says graphics drivers are outdated when they are not, and if that's what you're getting you can safely checkmark the "don't show this again" box and click to run using default settings.
Click the following link to Intel's website to get the most current Intel HD Graphic driver which is dated 8/12/2016. Download the Zip file of the drivers so that you can manually install them. I assume you have a 64-bit version of Windows which most laptops should have.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26228/Graphics-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-
Once downloaded simply unzip the file to some place that is easy for you to find. You will then need to do the following steps.
#1 - Right click the Windows icon in the lower left corner, then click Control Panel.
#2 - Click Hardware and Sound, and in the popup windows click on Device Manager (it has a shield icon to the left of it).
#3 - Expand Display Drivers so that you can see Intel(R) HD Graphics Family. Right click and choose Properties.
#4 - Click the Driver tab, then click on Update Driver.
#5 - In the next Window choose the option to Browse your laptop for the drivers.
#6 - Click "Let me pick from a list...", and then click the Have Disk button.
#7 - At this point click Browse to find wherever you unzipped the Intel HD Graphic drivers to. Go into the Graphics folder and you should see a file called igdh64.
#8 - Highlight that file, then click Open which will bring you back to the previous window. Click OK to close that window.
#9 - Back in the windows where you clicked the Have Disk button, simply click Next which start the installation process.
You can delete the Zip file you downloaded and the unzipped graphic driver folder. Hopefully this will fix your issue.
What this does is completely remove all traces of your old graphics drivers. Run it first, on reboot your system will load default Msoft drivers. Then you run/install the new Intel drivers. I have found, the hard way, that any traces of your previous Intel rivers will either cause the new drivers to not load at all, or will still cause problems with your new drivers.
I found that from searching for a fix for mass effect (ME1) getting the "igfx has stopped and recovered" problem, crashing the game every time. I ran DDU to remove all traces of my old drivers, installed the new drivers (the same ones I had tried numerous times) and not only does ME now run perfectly, I am now for the first time ever, able to run STO with lighting 2.0 turned on, and my graphics set to max, without getting an almost immediate D3D crash. Due to time constraints I haven't yet done extensive testing, but I have gone for almost 2 hours with no problems at all, whereas before 10 minutes was the max I ever went without a D3D crash.
Granted, you aren't getting the D3D crash, however the "trick" of completely removing all traces of your old drivers before installing the new ones won't hurt, and may help immensely.
