How to maximize your control skill like a 14 year old minmaxer

lucho80lucho80 Member Posts: 6,600 Bug Hunter
So someone asked in Reddit, and I actually took the time to figure it out. For those who want to just troll enemies in the gravity kills PvE with TBR.

1) 4 research high control+part gens consoles. Why these? Because they work great together.
2) 1 R&D egnineering and 1 R&D science console with [Control]
3) Borg deflector. Nothing else gets that high
4) 23rd century science boffs for +10 each. Max possible is +30.
5) Joined Trill captain for +9.
6) Threat Analysis Matrix (lobi)
7) Bioneural Infusion Circuits (lobi)
8) Tachyokinetic Converter (lobi)
9) Assimilated Module (Omega rep)
10) Chroniton Drive Actuator (Temporal rep)
11) Delta engines = +40
12) Psychological warfare trait
13) Dyson 2 piece = +20.3

Temporary extras:
1) Inspirational Leader
2) Doff assignment crits
3) Fleet sci boost
4) Quantum Singularity manipulator

I'm sure some would be interested in this, but I'm no min-maxer. I simply play the game and am happy when I survive my battles. Don't need to kill things in one shot, I leave that to the DPS E-peens.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

I think you missed the point of this build completely. Outside of pushing things into a black hole, I doubt you'll kill much too quickly with that build, much like my 800 drain skill Palisade.

Some neat ideas there. Thank you for taking the time to work this out and then sharing it, OP.

LOL you didn't even read what the post was about, didn't even notice what skillset the build focused on. It wasn't weapons pew-pew nor even Exotic Particle Gens. It is nothing about DPS but it will still kill the NPCs.

Low DPS to get to this drain skill, but it doesn't blow up either. FYI, the new max is 813.

Step One: BE a 14 year old min/maxer

    Hmm... I failed that step...

I love Grav Gens, ive been maxing Grav Gens on ships for years. Any one remember when they were broken and didn't actually effect gravity well size? I know Lucho was around back then. The day the fix went live I wept, I was so happy.

Any way, I like big wells, always have, when a science ship warps in with an itty bitty hull and a large well in my face I get sprung and all that.

So hear is some serous advice for those seriously looking into a Ctrlx build.

Use the research lab consoles. The kind with the exotic damage bonus on use of heals, that way you can hit all your heals for maximum effect before you unleash all the science. Be carful when you buy them, there are two that share exactly the same name and boost both EPG and CtrlX. But one gives a larger bonus to CtrlX and one gives a larger bonus to EPG

Keep in mind that there is NO benefit in taking CtrlX passed 400. Everything that CtrlX effects, except for gravity well range, it modifies by teeny tiny unnoticeable amounts. The benefit to your gravity well size is caped at 400, so once you have that, pump EPG instead.

With the right ship and gear you can quite easily get 400 CtrlX and 350 EPG. Getting EPG to 250 as a minimum is also important as the CrtH bonus from particle manipulator caps out hear. There is no cap on the crit severity bonus from particle manipulator, or the minor damage increase from EPG itself though, so continuing to take it higher is a good thing.

The Psychological warfare trait will increase your gravity well pull strength, but NOT its range. Its still good, getting enemies to the center of the well sooner increases your DPS, just don't expect to produce a well with a diameter beyond 24km using it, 24km is the hard cap on a Gravity Well 3.

A MegaWell build (any build that produces a maximum size gravity well) can absolutely put out 100k DPS + in infected space with a pug, without superior romulan operatives or tactical abilities, but you HAVE to know when to use your abilities. Gravity well builds are some of the most fun you can have in PVE but they are not for the lazy space bar mashers, you have to be prepared to think and be situationally aware.

Finally gravity well builds are awesome in gravity kills. Pick an enemy, push them toward the cosmic space ship disposal shoot. Place 24km diameter gravity well on enemy when they are just passed the point of no return. Watch enemies friends get sucked passed said point, wait for well to expire, laugh maniacally and post about it on the forum latter.

Hm I haven’t used Tractor Beam Repulsors without the reverse doff in ages, last time was probably in No win Scenario.

Sounds like fun for Gravity Kills map! As they start with lieutenant skill and already do some good even without going all nerdy in graviton generators I see them easily integrated on most builds.

    Nice suggestion.

Try it! You'll need to get your approach angle right, but when you do it's really fun to push those pesky mobs down the event horizon.

Nice to see the good old borg deflector mentioned again (still using it for the CtrlX on some ships). The new queue does make science fun. Thanks for the post Lucho!

Lol the laugh maniacally part is great, as the ship's crew scream as their hull buckles while their captain is yelling for emergency to power to SIF.

I'm also enjoying these kind of builds for quite some time now, in numerous variations though, so much fun!! Using the Borg def and engine for additional survivalbility and speed + the dyson core and shield for extra crtx and some more survivalbility though.

For maximum fun in Gravity kills, build that high controlx ship then add on photonic shockwave and high yield torps with the overwhelming strikes power - so much fun shockwave punting Tzen for profit (well, as long as you don't mind losing loot drops)

Hey @pwstolemyname, so how is the best way to achieve that combo?

To everyone else, I think I'll post the drain gear today under a similar title.

    @lucho80, great build!
would love to see another. :)

How large is the GW effect for that build? 15km or more?
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

While the benefit to some powers like gravity well isn't as great after 400 we have a great many other powers under the control umbrella now like Scramble Sensors. During Tribble testing during the skill revamp i completely maxed my control skill and was able to get Scramble Sensors to a 90+ second uptime with OSS3 keeping mind it's global cooldown is like half of that. While Borticus no doubt rolled his eyes at me and nerfed the power it's still an amusing thing to do to NPC's. Jam Sensors may suck slightly less now with the new D9 trait too. Disables like photonic shockwave and Viral Matrix also work with control skill. So there are quite a few fun things you could do with 700+ control skill.

BTW you can craft [ctrlx]x3 secondary deflectors. I own several.

Lol, I hate trying to craft deflectors like that. Hell, even the [damp] engines with the right extra modifiers is frustrating. The RNG hates my guts.

Yeah RNG is a TRIBBLE. I'm a weapons crafter so i know, i can make 400 mil one day and lose 100 mil the next. But i have an extra one i'd be willing to part with if you want it. There are a few for sale too (mostly by me LOL) i think they're 20-30 mil for epic deteriorating variants.

Also the Delta engines (i think) have +40 control if i recall and the dyson 2-piece also grants something like +23.4. The skill revamp retroed some old gear since they combined the defensive and offensive variants of each skill.

I couldn't help but chuckle at this; thank you.

Quite good to know. And it's not just gravity wells that benefit from this: IFF hacking does, too. Na'kuhl ships in particular can be severely worked over with it...

Shortly after this shot was taken, the Daemosh in question wiped out its own escort group. While not shown here: yes, it affects their temporal doppelgangers; and yes, the invulnerability they confer is a buff that can be stripped off via subnucleonic beam...

I also suspect it'd be hilarious against Leeta's 'Mobius Squadron'.

Bonus points if you had the foresight to have demorecord or some video capture running at the time. It inspired the mental image of my chief science officer (far left in below image)...

Stupid question, what is IFF hacking? That link takes me to scramble sensors.

It's exactly what Scramble Sensors does.

IFF means Identify Friend/Foe ...basically the system that lets you identify allies or enemies in combat on a battlefield - IFF hacking is basically either placating (aka the can't tell who is who so stop shooting as they can't tell which signal is which ..or jam sensors) confusing (all signals are classed as enemy..or the temporal Heisenburg power) or outright conversion (they fire on their allies thinking they are enemies..basically scramble sensors)

In all cases you basically hack the enemy ship to alter its targetting parameters

Ok, that I get. Using the acronym IFF was too technical for me, but now I know. AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE! GIJOE!!!!

I built a 400/400 EPG-Control build before the skill revamp. I was so proud of my accomplishment i posted it on the forums. I'll see if i can find it...
