Curious what you guys think some good looking and ugly ships are available on STO

Here is my list
Note that T1, T2, T3 refers to the Tier of the ship.

Super Hawt
Miranda, and The "Real 5":
Kirk's Enterprise
Archer's Enterprise
Picard's Enterprise (show)
Voyager
Defiant

Excelsior
Star Cruisers

Akira

Just SEEING this makes me want to quit STO, stop watching all Star Trek, throw my computer off a bridge, go down there and jump on it until it tuns to dust, buy another computer, throw THAT one off the same bridge (just to be safe) then throw up on it.

When you say T1 cruiser, what ship are you referencing? The Miranda or the TOS Enterprise? Both are T1 cruisers.

Also, the Oberth IS the T1 Science ship.

apart from the fact the akira is a beautiful ship, how does archer's ships get into your best and the akira almost the worst? they are very similar in appearance.

well i have to disagree with you on a lot there and i am sure a lot more people will as well considering its just personal taste. I happen to love the akira and the fact that you said the NX or archers enterprise is good looking kinda contradicts each other since the NX was based on the Akira. Secondly the Galaxy is a ship i find to be ugly i hate it.
    So here is my list

    Really Good looking ship
    Assault Cruiser
    Odey
    excelsior
    Akria
    Intrepid

    Good looking ship
Both T5 escorts defiant and griffin
    the Nova classes
    Luna classes
    Prometheus class

    Not so good looking
    Destiny classes
Constitution (I never did like the neck on it)
    sabre class
    Miranda
    stargazer
    Galaxy
    NX

    Ugly ships
    Olympic class
    Nebula (I hate this ship)

So there we have it lets see what others have to say

there were only parts of that i liked. the neck was one of them along with the hull the rest is ugly as hell. i thought it was a interesting design. it looked a lot more aggressive than almost all the fed ships

This really is a case of 'each to their own'. Whereas a good number of people have listed Nova class, for example, as either meh or ugly I, personally, love that little ship. Anyway - a few thoughts (in terms of looks rather than capabilities):

Nova class: As noted, I love this little ship personally - small, underrated, and it looks a litlte like a squashed Sovereign class. Have a particular soft-spot for the Rhode-Island variant (mostly due to how well it performed during the earlier stages of the game).

Luna Class: Great ship to fly, and looks almost elegant from certain angles, but looks like a slug when viewed from the aft.

Defiant class: Sorry Escort Fanboy's - it's a ruddy saucer section with nacelles and a big nose that shouts 'look at my guns'. Didn't like the look of thing on DS9 and don't like it now.

Prometheus class: In my humble opinion, what the Defiant should have been. Sleek, but unassuming, and has an odd sense of being powerful without needing to shout about it like the Defiant class does.

Odyssey class: Generally love it - probably my favorite design, certainly of the newer breed of ship although, to nitpick, I can't make up my mind on whether I like the deflector. The rather fantastic bridge deserves comment too!

And I shall reserve comment so far as the rest are concerned.

The Archerprise IS the Akira, just flipped upside-down and with some different greebles. I guess OP thinks the Akira looks good when it's inverted.

    My Hot or Not list:

    Canon ships: Hot

    CRYPTIC designs: Not

I take you never watched First Contact? If you did, you would answer your own question. The Akira class was featured on screen which makes it as cannon as a Howitzer.

So what about ships that were not designed by Cryptic but are not canon either?

So what are we using to gauge the "hawtness" of these ships?

"Hawt" based on the ship's design?

    or

"Hawt" in that the in-game graphics are well done for the ship?

If going by design, I would say the following:

(In order from Best to Worst)

    1. Excalibur
    2. Constitution Refit
    3. Nova Rhode Island Refit
    4. Constitution
    5. Nova
    6. Miranda
    7. Excelsior
    8. Excelsior Refit
    9. NX
    10. Sovereign
    11. Intrepid
    12. Bellephron
    13. Venture
    14. Galaxy
    15. Defiant
    16. Sao Paulo
    17. Fleet Escorts
    18. Thunderchild
    19. Akira
    20. Sabre
    21. Star Cruisers
    22. Odyssey
    23. Oberth
    24. Shi'kar
    25. Nebula
    26. DSSVs
    27. Luna
    28. Prometheus
    29. Cheyenne
    30. Galaxy-X
    31. Olympic / Hope / Golfball ships

Personally I never really liked the Galaxy class or its over-sized saucer. The premise of flying everyone's families around on high risk first contact missions never really made sense to me, and the aesthetically the ship looks lopsided. The Galaxy X was an exception to that for me... the extra engine balances the hull better, and I think the secondary hull is larger too.

I do like most klingon hulls and federation escorts, as they tend to seem more functional to me. Never really been fond of most federation science ships either (although I love the intrepid class).

Not that I'd ever want to fly one, but I like the freighter hulls too (again functional).

I like the Imperial, it had a 'warship' feel to it most other ships don't have. It wasn't 'friendly' like Fed ships usually are, which really did make it out of place. A favorite pic of mine http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb204/CapnBludd/STO/screenshot_2010-10-09-17-44-00-1.jpg

Personally? While I'm not in favor of a T5 Connie (simply a stylistic thing for me, I have no logical case against it), I love the Excalibur..

I'm also a big fan of the Sao Paulo, the Venture, and of course the Odyssey.. I'm not in favor of the ships with a bunch of stuck-on angles and panels (the Gladius and Yellowstone being the worst offenders).

KDF-side.. I'm not much for the BortaS, but I love the styling of the Vor'Kang and the Vor'Cha.. The ships which look like blades.. But not the ones like the Tor'Kaht, like they're more bludgeoning than bladed.. Those I dislike.

Too many to list opinions on everything.....

    Best looking
    Soverign
    Akira/Thunderchild
    NX
Luna (though not a fan of the variants)
    Magellan
    Vigilant
Haj (so menacingly ugly, its perfect)
    Vor'kang
    B'Rel

    Ugly
    Vo'quv (does NOT look Klingon)
Galaxy (beautiful in profile, ugh from any angle that shows how overwide the saucer is)
    Intrepid
Any Research Science Vessel (what the heck?)
    Oberth

And I have to have a special anti-shout-out to the Excelsior. The ribbed neck makes me think of the rolls of flab on someone with the physique of Homer Simpson, and the gurgle-plop noise it made at the finale of its big moment in Search For Spock just reinforced first impression in my mind. Plus the engineering hull tapers so much to the rear it just looks so flimsy. Its like someone with a huge beer gut and frail little limbs, or maybe the starship equivalent of MODOK.

Find it interesting that you like Archers Enterprise but not the Akira the guys behind designing the model for Enterprise have been quoted saying that the producer turned an Akira upside down and said lets go with that and the NX-01 was born lol

The polarization is strong with this one.

Personally, I find very few ships to be truly "ugly". Some of them are different, some are not to my tastes, but it's really only a handful that make me cringe.

    Ugly to Me
    • T6 Pilot Escorts (Is it supposed to look like a Jem'Hadar ship and a Defiant had a baby?)
    • Destiny, Oracle, and Trident DSSVs (Just... weird. An Oberth with birth defects.)
    • Haakona and Kara class warbirds (about the only Romulan ships I'd never, ever consider flying. They just don't look like they fit in with the rest, and while I usually *like* bulky ships, they seem to try and make it so they're not and just fall inbetween.)
    • The Federation "future" vessels (Nautilus and its pancake friends... the just look like someone ran over starfleet vessels with a steamroller)
    • The 31st century timeships (just boring looking, and yet they're everywhere)
    • Saber and its alternate classes (Looks like an Akira/Oslo with stunted growth. Not to mention I'm a big fan of the Akira and the Oslo, so why bother with lesser versions?)
    • Na'khul ships (I really enjoy blowing these up).
    • Breen ships (I know that Cryptic has to work with the canon here, but they're just ugly vessels all around, and not even in a "fun, industrial way" that I often enjoy.)

With that said, I know I have peculiar tastes. For example...

    Pretty to Me/Special Shout-outs
    • Nimbus class DSSV (Yup, I think the other DSSVs are ugly enough to earn some renown for it... but the Nimbus? I really love the Nimbus. Maybe it's because she's the only DSSV that wider than it is tall, like many canon Federation ships.)
    • D'deridex class warbird (My all time favorite canon Trek ship, and she looks stunning in this game. Cryptic did her justice).
    • Oslo and Akira (See them getting plenty of hate here, so I'll give them some love. I still need to build a character someday that can properly rock an Oslo as his main vessel).
    • The Gorn Ships (Criminally underrated in my book, I'm really fond of their design. they "feel" like something that would exist back in the original six films and have this sort of alien ziggural vibe that I really dig. Really wish Cryptic would give us more to play with. Of all the races that Cryptic has mostly created new vessels for wholly from scratch with no real canon to base em' off of, the Gorn win.)
    • Deinos Destroyer (Not gonna lie, pretty sad I can't get one for another couple years... or unless I break down and buy a LTS finally)
    • Valdore class (One time Cryptic I think beat the original design they based in on, the Valdore is absolutely beautiful. Just a sleek ship that builds off the already lovable Mogai design).
    • Hirogen vessels (Okay, Crytpic just took these from Voyager, but I'm biased and VERY happy to see them available in-game. Easily the best looking non-Federation ships introduced in Voyager).
    • T'Liss class warbird (I will cut a TRIBBLE to have the T6.)
    • Voth Bulwark (Everyone calls it a sex toy, but to me she reminds me of an old galleon in the best of ways. I just feel formidable when I start to broadside with that bad boy).

I'd say most others fall in the middle somewhere, and if I were to sit down and rank ALL of them it'd take me a long, long time. Most canon ships would end up near the top, as I love me some Intrepids, Galaxies, Connies, Mirandas, Vor'chas, Klingon BoPs, D7s/Ktingas, and on and on. If they actually look like something that belongs to that faction or the style a race's ships would look like (like the Nausicaans, they nailed that one, too), then I'm probably cool with it.
