andrelotandrelot Member Posts: 4 Arc User
Hi there where i launched the game it told me that sto will drop directx support on march 2017.

You guys do know what directx 11 doesnt work for a lot of people right.
Basicly shutting out a lot of old players, when i start the game it goes to the loading... screen but after that nothing happens, no hd activity and if i keep pressing the mouse keys ingame windows will tell me the game has stopped working and crashes to desktop.

the following things i tryed:

1. Reinstall the game (no fix).
2. Reinstall directx (no fix)
3. Latest drivers (no fix)
4. switching from full screen to borderless or windowed mode (no fix)
5. im at the end of my rope seeing i bought lifetime and it will mean i cant play anymore after march 2017..

please help us.

You're asking Cryptic to do what no other company is doing. I understand and feel for you. You can get a decent refurbished laptop for a bit more than you paid for the LTS. Maybe you can set aside your country's equivalent of $20 a month for a little over a year?

What is your setup? DX11 should be possible unless you are running it on a truly ancient PC. If it's a desktop, consider a 2nd hand GFX card. If you are still on XP... you cannot seriously complain. Upgrade. There is no obligation to keep supporting an ever expanding range of hardware; things must move forward or we all suffer.

I switched over from DX 9 to 11, and I can say that I do seem some performance issues. The main issue I have is that after using STO for a lengthy duration, I need to close the program and restart it. I had this problem with DX 9 back in season 5 or 6. Just a little surprised to see this problem return again. Plus, it takes a few minutes to load to the characters screen. I am hoping this gets resolved, but seeing as how it took to get DX 9 to work, I am not holding my breath.

Velqua I really like your avatar, it's very adorable I must say. :)

One thing I'd recommend you TRY is when the loader program launches select OPTIONS then de-select On-Demand Patching & select Force Verify as those will ensure your game client is FULLY PATCHED prior to launching.

OP: Despite the typical brainless suggestion people always give to "upgrade to the latest drivers", that's not always the right solution. If you spend some time on Google you'll find people posting on various forums etc about what drivers are the best. For example, when nvidia released version 375.57 for Win 10, a lot of people started experiencing crashes on various games and even sites. So you may need to do some experimenting and change to an older driver version. Some drivers work very well for some games and terrible for others. This has been the case for game players for a long, long time.

Ok, so my girlfriend has a i7 Win10 laptop with a Nvidia GeForce GT740m graphics card. About 7 months ago we installed STO and started playing with no issues, we play the game from Steam. A few weeks ago, we started to get the warning about Dx9 no longer being supported after march. I did not realize before that we were running the game on Dx9, as my PC (i7, Win7, Intel HD Graphics 4000) never showed me that warning since I've been using Dx11 for over a year and a half, STO got installed that way.
We switch her configuration to Dx11. Now the game gets stuck on the loading screen showing the AoY logo. Forcing the game back to Dx9, we get a message about tesselation not supported (of course, it's a Dx11 feature, just curious because we did not see that message before) but the game loads fine.... until it crashes after 2 or 3 zone. Badly.
Latest graphics card drivers, latest Win updates, latest Dx11 updates; the works. No dice. At one point I did notice a message (which looked like it came from steam for the dialog window color scheme) saying something about missing files was in the back of said loading screen, but I do not know for sure if it was there before or if it's coming from another game/app.
I deleted the game and I'm reinstalling right now, but I don't have much hope for a solution.

Does anybody who bothered reading this long post have any insights or ideas for a fix?

Steam? If possible (don't know how the account is handled though), I would install Arc and install the game using that to cut out any issues possibly caused by Steam. Once it's installed, you can run the game without arc by just running "Star Trek Online.exe" from the installation directory.

That can be done with the steam version as well. The .exe is located in steam/steamapps/common/star trek online/

No reason to use ARC when one already has a launcher, as neither ARC nor steam interact in any way shape or form with STO, they simply launch the stand-alone launcher anyway and are out of the equation from that moment on. The only thing both still have is the overlay.

It's fine, their DX11 renderer tends to shut down like that. Just wipe out the cache of the game and let it rebuild shaders. GT740m is a DX11 capable card, the Intel's integrated junk should do fine as well.
If you are experiencing troubles with the DX11 renderer, the best bet would be to roll back onto DX9 and patiently wait until March, hoping cryptic will do at least something to resolve this failcluster. Should they not, well, as people seem to notice, it has been promised to introduce DX10 as an option; don't hold your hopes for that, though.

That sounds like something I haven't tried yet. How do I do that?
I did delete all local files and reinstalled the game, I guess that should have forced the shaders rebuild (and get everything else rebuilt too)

Try removing at \Star Trek Online\Live\cache

is your card DX11 compatable? that is the first question you should ask before anything else. if so then start going down the list. you have to manually changed STO to dx11 in the video settings then restart the game. now when they were experimenting with dx 11 a few years back it caused crashes in the game badly. more than likely you have to dumb down your setting and slowly work them up to see what your card can handle.

What does it have to do with the crashing?

I get that message every time I start the game and every time I switch it to DX11. Restart and it's back to DX9 again. I have no performance issues with 9 or 11, I just don't know why it keeps defaulting back. And only on this game...
