Do you use your favorite ship?

    1) Do you use a particular ship because you actually have an attachment to it (favorite hero ship, like the look of it ...etc), or do you base your ship choice on its performance in game?

Depends on whether I'm on my alts or 2 Mains.

My main Tac (for PvE purposes) fly's whatever ship looks promising DPS wise, not that I'm a big time parser or very good for that matter.
But I do like to run the occasional DPS check every so often. She has been flying the Fleet Phantom for a quite a while now because I like the setup and can't seem to find anything that outperforms it by a large margin. And I guess I've grown very comfortable with the boff layout at this point (maybe I'm getting a little too used to it though, might be time to give some other vessels a fair chance).

My Main Sci (who was originally only for PvP), fly's the T5U Vesta. But tbh I've really lost interest in even dabbling with PvP these days. I do however love the look of the Vesta line. I would say they are some of my favorite looking ships in Star Trek. Just a shame I can't get a T6 version.
And I gotta constantly face people in T6 specialized ships :/

My alts (x4) fly whatever I feel suits their roles, and what I like visually, sometimes that is a compromise, and sometimes a certain ship just seems to "fit" perfectly.

    2) Does it bother you when a ship you like has a poor stats (boff/console layout, shield modifier, turn rate...etc)?

I agree with what @ash352 said; There really is no bad ship. Provided you understand how the game works a bit.

For example, some had said the T6 Nebula was "Pure Garbage" because it didn't have 16 million Tac console slots and perfect boff layout/spec...
But when I took it out for a spin, I found it to be almost, if not more capable then my main Tac's Fleet Phantom.

I bought the T6 Nebula purely on aesthetics and its visual look. It has been one of my favorite Trek ships even since DATA captain's one in "Redemption II - TNG".
Which is nice, because I had bought a string of ships purely for traits over the last little while. It was nice to finally buy one, just because I liked it.

So when taking advice from others about ship capabilities, you really have to take care to separate the Min/Max'er commentary from general gameplay commentary/reviews.

A hardcore +150k Min/Max'er may not see much potential in the T6 Nebula, while other more balanced players may find it to be an almost perfect ship for their uses.

I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative commentary from Min/Max'ers. Because I'm loving the new Nebula design, and the performance does not feel lacking at all.
Sure, It will never be a "Top of the DPS Charts Ship", but if your expectations can be set a little lower. It's a very capable, and super fun vessel. And has no problems whatsoever with completing content.

As much as I love the Excelsior class, the Resolute is one of the few T6 cruisers I don't own.

Why? Because I absolutely hate it's layout and consider it a total waste of Zen. Could I be competitive in it? of course.. but the issue always comes up when I have extra Zen that there is always something that's just a better use of that Zen.

Luckily, one of my other favorite ships is the Vengeance which happens to be awesome. I also really like the Odyssey class and my kit bash Arbiter, so I'm good there. On Romulans it's even easier because I also highly favor the Mogai and the T6 Morrigu is one of the best ships in the game.

I really do wish the Excelsior wasn't such a steaming pile of space garbage. If they even changed one of those Engineering stations to a Universal I would buy it in an instant.

It's funny that you mention your love for the Excelsior because that was the main inspiration for this thread. The first ship I ever bought was the T5 Excelsior. I used it for quite a while and when the fleet version was released I got that one immediately as well. At that point in time the Excelsior was the best cruiser you could get on the fedside. It was more maneuverable and had the coveted LtCmd Tac station. I purchased the Resolute when it was released, even with its terribad boff layout. While I agree that with you and others that it can be made competitive enough it just feels disappointing to fly which is unfortunate. I also agree that a simple change such as making that ensign station universal would have basically saved the ship. I also moved on to the Vengeance as I like it looks pretty good and its performance is unrivaled.

Do I use my favorite ship? nope. After hunting for years, I still haven't found one I prefer yet, but it'll probably be something small and fast, with the potential to fall into Assault ship or Fighter catagories without actually being either of those. I'd use the fighters more, but they tend to go 'boom' too easily.

nope and wishing I had it. If it came out during the Summer event the last two years, I missed it. Last year due to focusing on TOS toon like an ijit, and the year before life got in the way.

Haven't checked to see if any are floating around, or even if they could be.

iirc they were an option in the phoenix box but that was the last time.... possibly forever

The main reason I started playing this game was the old T4 Defiant. I have since acquired every single version of the "tactical escort."

BUT, getting the most out of the highest level version means dedicating two consoles and a forward weapon. You don't have to do that, but I feel like I might as well be flying something else if I'm not using what's unique to it. If I'm taking all that stuff off anyway, I'd be better off flying what I consider a far more ideal escort, layout and stat-wise: the FT6 vet destroyers. So, only two of my 16 toons currently fly Defiants, and I'm considering paring that down to one.

PS: Why oh why can the Fed vet destroyer not have a **** cloak?

Has something to do the truce that was drawn up between the Klingons and the Feds or the Feds and the Romulans. I'm a bit vague on the details. Either it was in one of the Enterprise episodes (each of which I've seen exactly 1 time), or during one of the other shows. Thinking it was in Enterprise. Near the end of the series. But the Feds gave up all rights to use cloaking tech on anything.

Now that they've "up-cycled" a Winter Event Ship, I'd look for them to maybe do the same with the original Summer Event Ships. One can hope, yes?

Speaking of the Risian Ships, I just outfitted the Cruiser on an alt with a rainbow turret build. Gave it as many spammy visual abilities as I could, including Fireworks. She's a thing of beauty, partying her way to victory. I was actually impressed with her DPS, for how she's equipped.

and it doesn't cause any issues with the visual over-kill animations? I know in the Queue that can be a prob.

    1. Well I would, if I could. Somehow, STO manages to put virtually everything canon at T5 or higher, except my favorite: The Miranda.

I mean, come on! It's probably the most commonly seen Starfleet vessel, short of the Excelsior, and it was the bad guy vessel in what is usually seen as the best Trek movie. Boggles the mind. If they ever T6 it, I will be all over it like a Black Friday morning shopper.

That said, other favorites I fly plenty: T6 Galaxy, Fleet T5U Nebula, Keldon and Fleet Qib just name a few.

    2. Obviously, I'm not flying the Miranda at endgame, so I can only talk about ships in general on this point.

Generally speaking, no, usually a layout is a secondary concern, unless my key powers for a build are unavailable because of lack of room.

There are very few ships where the setup truly bothered me though. The old T5 Defiant and Galaxy come to mind. The Defiant had more tac abilities than I could ever use, while being stuck with Lt.'s only for eng/sci. Horrible!

The Galaxy was worse though. That thing's dreadful layout spawned the longest running threadnought of the STO forums... for a good reason. The T6 feels like a totally different ship, so upgrading here was fully worth it.

Also, the Regent having no science powers without using the universal slot. Who's bright idea was that? Who leaves spacedock without hazard emitters at the very least?!

Before they offered the ship I really wanted (the T6 Connie), I flew my second favorite ship- The Fleet Excelsior, first at T5 and then T5-U. That it was the best tac cruiser was just a bonus for me. Loved that ship.

The Resolute was an horrible upgrade (and took forever to come out as well). Never got one, and instead kept flying my T5-U Excelsior and saved the money.

I missed out on the T5 one, so that would be neat. But it's more likely that we well get one of those other Vorgon ships.

Well......off the top of my head.....

Although, I play The Defiant Escort T6 at least on - I would whole heartily prefer the TOS Constitution Enterprise this is the model that I came here to play 99.9 percent of the time - I still wear that classic 23c uniforms and weapons to me, they still look the best":)

For me, unfortunately, it is the T1 version which I've only been playing with on the "Agents of Yesterday" after opening up a plethora of R&D boxes I've yet to get the holy grail of ships, however, the dice roll of RNG just dose not seem to work out for me LOL --

But I'm hopeful, as I do have 3 un - opened boxes yet to look in!

All that said and done -
Yet, I was elated that Cryptic and company introduced the ship in at least some form that's playable at the end game level but, unfortunately, it was when I took some time off from the game and I'm worried that the promo with stop and all I'll have is the entry level T1 version and haven't seen it on the the either exchange, but I wonder if there will be a Fleet version of the Temporal Light Cruiser?

    ===================================================
P.S. of note how the original series had this ship listed as a Heavy Star Cruiser (A Taste of Armageddon) and in an alternate Kelvin time line but here it's a Light one but regardless, to me is still the best and most Iconic ship of all time!

P.S.S - Love station K.13, hopefully, we can visit Star-base 11 (Menagerie) and have uniforms that date back to Capt Pike's command. Although, you can probably come close by making some mod from whats on hand.

P.S.S.S - While I'm thinking about, how about a token of some kind that lets you transfer reputation, traits, ground and space instead of grinding out but only one character once they reach level 60 almost like a clone of the character or, even if I could transplant a character from one server to another with all of their attributes in tact!

I'm sure these ideas have been discussed in some manner or anther before - so, please forgive any duplicate or, similar request.

Thanks, I didn't mean to write all of this, just couldn't help myself....spur of the moment!

I can agree that stats of a ship is easily overcome by a good solid build to make up for the bad stats, the deal breaker for me is boff seating if a ships seating is junk i avoid it, look at the orion marauder talk about bad boff seating theres not much i can do with it because of the boff seating , but hey it was free during one of the giveaways a while back.

Oh yes, I remember I was happy about the giveaway, because I didn't really have a ship for my Orion engineer (she was using the Kobali cruiser). Tried to make it work. Even got me the T5-U. Didn't help, can't make 'em seats work.

its hard to love the tumorship... its just meh in SO many ways
My problem with it is aesthetic. If I could paint it a bilious yellow, it could fit into the Vogon Constructor Fleet in the novel version of The Hitchhiler's Guide to the Galaxy without an issue. I've got to look at my ship all the time I'm flying it - I don't want it to look like something Dr. McCoy couldn't find a cure for.

If we are talking ships from the various incarnations of Star Trek, then I'd have to say that my favorite ship would probably be the TOS Connie simply because I'm from that era so it holds a lot of nostalgia for me.

As far as actual in game ships, my favorite is simply whatever ship I can get to work well with each of my characters.

    Op,
Being on the PS4, not a lot of ship purchasing options at this point. That said, in response to your questions:

    1) Pathfinder Science Vessel for my main and Andromeda Cruiser for my secondary main since one is 60 and the other 59 near 60. I can make one look like Voyager and the other like the Enterprise D, from both Voyager and TNG that I watch as a young man. But I mixed and match the variants to create my own ship design and when I feel like it, I go back to the TV show look if I feel like it.

    2) I have 5 T6 ships, having bought the Heavy Carrier escort bundle for my other 3 alt characters. All 5 T6 ships are built with Mark X-XII parts picked up in missions or queues. Only the two aforementioned ships in item 1 have the Solanae set. Everything else, I just try to match consoles and weapons for what I like it a particular ship. I play the two ships from item 1 and one of the Heavy Carrier escorts in Advance queues. As long as I don't put myself directly in the middle of the enemy and fight along side teammates and not off on my own, no problem with Advance queues.

So I don't see how any T5/T6 can have poor stats. I'd say it's more about players not put 'some' effort to develop 'some' knowledge in their ship builds along with setting up their boffs and captain skills for how they to build their ships. So I buy my ships for how they look and what I think I can do with them.

"Will they be fun to fly for me?" is my main thought I don't need a ship to kill something in under 10 secs, just something enjoyable to look at and fun to pilot. And I do pilot my Andromeda as it will always be equipped with both beams and torpedoes and will have some rep 'set' bonuses at some point where I need to maneuver the ship. I can't just park and shoot till dead.

With me it's partly laziness. I get a ship, get to know her, can't find the time or brain cells to understand the pros and cons of the other ships available, and stick to her. I fly a Nova too and I haven't even seen Voyager. I just got her at an early stage in the game, my first science ship, and got rather attached to her. Like Reyan01 I had an Intrepid at one point, when my T1 Nova was just getting too outclassed, and liked her, even if she does look like a bar of soap (fitted her out specially for tackling Romulans, who were kicking poor little USS Magpie all around the sky). I should dust that ship off again. Even then I was using the Nova some of the time as well! But otherwise it was the Nova all the way until I could get a Fleet Nova at Tier 5 and I'm still flying her.

On the KDF side I started with the Norgh Bird of Prey (at the time when KDF captains started at Level 25), got to enjoy the cunning way you need to fly a BoP to make it work, and again never got around to seriously trying anything else. On that side I have been advancing to the new free ship for each tier, but then one free Bird of Prey is much like the last one to fly, only better. I really SHOULD try a different type of ship, though, if only to have something to fall back on when I'm getting bad lag. Trying to fly BoP tactics when the game is lagging isn't sensible!

Yes I use my favorite ship. The Odyssey. Been using it since February of 2013. Have never switched class of ships.

I first started with T-5 Engineering Odyssey. Switched a few months of using that to the T-5 Science Odyssey. Used it for about two years I think, then of course did the T-5U.

When the T6 Odyssey's came out I gave Cryptic my Credit Card and said, "Do as you wish!"

I now have every version of the Odyssey. I fly the U.S.S. Liberty NX-92813-L T-6 Science Odyssey (Mixed parts - science saucer, engineering hull, tactical pylons (I think), and science nacelles (I think) last two might be the other way around.

My favorite ship is the Kelvin Timeline Connie and yes, I use it every time I play. My other favorite is the Vengeance, which I also use frequently, but the KT Connie tends to be my main go-to ship. My third favorite is my T6 fleet Arbiter (battlecruiser), not for its looks (I actually find it pretty ugly), but for its sheer firepower and versatility. Those are the 3 main ships I use.

I use my favorites exclusively, to the point that most of my characters will only ever have one or two ship traits unlocked.

Fed Tac: currently T6 Excalibur, also Hestia and T6 Akira

Klink Fed Eng: T6 Sovereign, formerly T6 Galaxy, and before that it was the pseudo-Ambassador class Intel ship, forget the name ...

Fed Sci: T6 Intrepid, though I almost never play this character

Vorta Delta Recruit: T5U JHDC, also T6 JHSS

Temporal Agent: JJ-Prise, though if I ever get another T6 Prime Connie I may switch, idk, this toon also has the Vengeance as well

Sorry, that went out the window when Cryptic started releasing Fed ships with cloaks. There is absolutely no reason the Chimera/Manticore should not have an integrated cloak at a minimum, preferably a battle cloak.

Okay. feeling stupid. I know most of the fed ships in depth. exactly which ship uses cloak? I need to look this up.

I think you mean the cloaking device. not necessarily the ship:

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Console_-_Universal_-_Cloaking_Device

"Game Description The Treaty of Algeron, signed in 2311 by the Romulan Star Empire and the United Federation of Planets, prohibited Federation cloaking devices. This agreement has been a source of controversy in Starfleet, where some officers believed it severely limited tactical options and put the Federation at a disadvantage.

Although the Federation initially agreed to follow the treaty after the destruction of the Romulan homeworld, in early 2409 Starfleet was authorized to develop and implement cloaking technology on selected ships. "

How about one of several Intel ships, such as the Phantom?

    Or the Vengeance dreadnaught?

Or one of the 31st Century ships, like the Ouroboros?

Fed cloaking is now firmly established. Install one on the friggin' Manticore!

I assume that this thread is mostly about looks. My favorite STO ship overall is the Vesta and its' variants, but with no T6 version on the horizon I'm less invested in it than I used to be and I hardly ever fly it anymore since I'm on the Ship Mastery treadmill.

After that, my favorite Federation canon ships in terms of looks are the Enterprise from TWoK and the Intrepid class from Voyager. They're about tied, but with no readily accessible T6 version of the Constitution refit class I'd have to go with the T6 Pathfinder. I'm pretty happy with that but haven't flown it in awhile now.

On the Klingon side, my favorite is the BoP and it is well-represented with the T6 Kor so I'm satisfied on that score.

Alas, my favorite Romulan ship is the D'Deridex from TNG and I've never been satisfied with it.
