I'm lazy and have been messing around with a all turret build. It's not only viable, but pretty damn good. 90k dps with it. You'll do more with beams for sure, but if you're lazy like me and just like to aim your ship in the general direction of enemies turrets are for you! ;-)

90k is impressive. But if you're doing 160k otherwise, then it still shows turrets aren't the best weapons. :) (Which you said yourself too, of course). As a 'point-pressure' build (with, what's it called, Withering something Trait, to extend the duration of CSV), I can see turrets happening, though.

Yeah beams at this point win and they win by a comfortable margin...from my experience messing around with turret builds they seem to do about half the dps of a beam build (at least in my case). A more competent pilot and ship builder could probably do better. The fun factor can't be underestimated tho heh.

Also consider that a not insignificant number of players struggle to do enough damage at normal difficulty. Doing 90k is overkill for all content.

    Actually the Omni-Beams rules are:
1 crafted (from R&D system - any basic damage type possible- meaning no hybrid)
    +
1 from missions (currently possible - Ancient Antiproton, Chronometric Polaron, something... Tetryon)
    +
1 from reputation system (currently only Kinetic Beam from Omega Rep)

    Edit:
    That is on PC...

Actaully if you have an ANti P build you can run 4 . crafted anti p ... ancient anti p .... omega rep cut beam and mission polaron.

Wait, does the omni agony phaser really count as a crafted?
According to the text here it seems to...

...but asking just to be sure it isn't a copy/paste fail from the devs.

did you forget the one that comes with some ships? They're not part of those groups you listed.

well, it's a bit of a misnomer to say they are really Omni-Directional, since you can't shoot your own ship. Spherecal might be more accurate, since 360 degrees means it's on a 2D plain and not a 3D one with 6 verts.

You really should invest in Quad Tribble Cannons (now with more fluff!).

As I fly an Astika artillery build (engine animations are still broken by the way!) Using the 3 rear weapon slots for omin's works out nicely as manoeuvring while the Art console is active doesn't really happen.

Kinetic Cutting Beam is not a Beam? Its called Kinetic Cutting BEAM, and it's Omni Directional, and its got similar icon as other Omni-Beams... So, what if it's not getting bonuses from beam tac consoles... Unless you change the name, for me it will still be a Beam. :p

A kinetic cutting beam is a beam in much the same way that a guinea pig is a pig.

As to full strength or weaker - the real distinction for me is from where i can get them. And i don't go (normally) for lockboxes, so for me they are irrelevant.

Crafting is your friend. Doesn't require lockboxes.

KCB is a beam. I know the Dev said no, but just because it isn't boosted by beam abilities (or by anything, for that matter), doesn't mean it isn't a beam. It has beam visuals, has the travel speed of a beam, and it quaks like a beam. :P It does Kinetic damage, but isn't a torp. Perhaps the latter prompted the Dev to conclude the KCB is no beam. But ever heard of particle beams?! They do significant Kinetic damage. So, the KCB, for all purposes and intent, is a beam.

If its not affected by beam overload and Beam fire at will or beam damage consoles, I can see why a dev would say "It's not a beam".

Like I said, KCB is not boosted by anything at all. That doesn't disqualify it as a beam, though (see my post above).

Devs tend to think in terms of internal class tags rather than the linked animations :). To their eye it definitely does not quack like a duck. If your criteria is "what animation does it use?" then yes, its a beam. One I tossed off my Vengeance 'cause it looked silly in and amongst all the phaser emitters... which are 'beams' that don't look like beams at all .

I think the 3 omni restriction should stay in place, but the type restriction needs to go.
