Graphical uh... Tearing?

This is the best thing I can describe it as. I am unsure what the heck to call it.

This is a recent problem that has occurred and I am not sure why.
I'll give more information if need be, but the most important part: I run the game in DX9 because my Laptop can't handle DX11.

    If your on pc,
1 have you reciently updated your drivers
if so can you roll them back.
2 is this constant or just one instance or event?

3a if constant, does a restart of pc fix this?

3b just one instance or episode... is this every time you play it?

4 are you using mods? Did you install any new ones, have you reported tgis to the mod creator.

5 try adjusting your card settings, anti aliasing perhaps.

    Cheers

    1. No.
    2. It happens primarily in space, and in the Romulan Flotilla at the starship config-area.
    3. No.
    4. Every time. This started to happen a few months ago I think.
    5. No, I didn't even know this game had mods.
    6. Solved it. The problem was caused by Screen-Space Ambient Occlusion.

If it's turned off, it'll cause the stars to just bombard you and cause that graphical glitch and the same will happen in the Romulan Flottila's Space Logistics room when you look towards a specific light. Of course, this brings forth the issue that now the game has terrible framerate instead for me, going something like 10 FPS or so. And that is with every other setting put to low, min or off.

Hilarious that I either have to choose between 10 FPS, or blindness ?_?

Let me guess. This is with an AMD graphics card?

    Nvidia GeForce GT 240M...

"Being a Tesla family member, the GT 240 does not contain geometric tessellation engines, which disqualifies it as a candidate for full DirectX 11 compliance. DX11 is backwards compatible however, and can run through emulation modes on older-generation hardware, albeit without any of the exclusive features within the successive (unsupported) APIs. "

This is a issue with Star Trek Online moving into the way of only supporting DirectX 11 and no longer supporting DirectX 9. It appears your laptops onboard graphics chip is unable to fully support DirectX 11 and is therefor having massive issues rendering the game properly.

I am unsure if you can "modify" or force the chip to accept DirectX 11 fully, but even then these graphical issues will still occur.

Your only option then, as Star Trek Online will no longer support DirectX 9 will be a hardware upgrade. And since you are on a laptop this means that changing the GPU is not possible. You may need to resort to having to look into buying a new system.

But you should get a second opinion.

Well, I run the game in forced DX9 mode using the launcher option but I too see no other choice than to upgrade unfortunately. Something which I do really need to of course considering the age of the laptop but that's a bit difficult due to personal monetary issues. When I read that they'll stop supporting DX9, that really annoyed the TRIBBLE out of me.

I sincerely doubt DX11 would even be worth running on this laptop, however, DX11 is not now regardless, though I am not surprised if that is the issues behind this bug.

Well it appears to be that. I have a laptop also. It has a Intel Core i5-5200U, 8 GB RAM and Intel HD Graphics 5500.

If I set Star Trek Online to DirectX 9 I get the same graphical issues you have.
When I set the game to DirectX 11 the game displays and renders properly.

Well well, then we have the answer :(
    Thanks for all assistance.

Do you need a laptop or could you use a desktop computer? Maybe I could help you find a new system that won't cost a lot of money.

If you need your laptop for school or work, you could keep that. But perhaps get a cheap desktop computer for gaming. But that would also mean you need other things such as speakers, screen etc etc..

My former stationary computer exploded about a month ago, it's power supply went bust. Even so, it'd require an extensive upgrade since I made it 10 years ago. It's only benefit is 64-bit OS. I was trying to unscrew it to check out the damage, unfortunately the screws were tightened by the hand of God so I'll need to get my hands on an electric screwdriver to force them to get out instead.

This laptop I currently use is plugged into my LCD-display, I bought this laptop from my rl friend at a discount ( and still probably more than he'd gotten if he tried to sell it to some other ). Only capable of 32-bit OS, 2.5 ghz duo core, 4gb ram and the aforementioned 240M GT.

This'll probably be easier, a picture I took so that a friend could see just what my computers are / were.

I wasn't really meant to rely on it for as long as I have, but life's a TRIBBLE when you remain unemployed, and getting screwed over by society causing bills to stack up and get higher. It's only just recently I managed to get that more or less back on the track, to how it was 3 years ago. So with that backstory:

It is highly unlikely I'll be able to even afford a cheap solution.
The cheapest suggestion one of my friends suggested it's still too expensive.
So thanks, but I doubt I'll be able afford anything ( not to mention my clothes are falling apart ).

I am inclined to say that it could to be a graphics driver issue or perhaps some files in STO
has become corrupted which means you should select "Force Verify" in the options menu of the Launcher.

I tested STO running on 3 laptops using both integrated and dedicated GPUs. The oldest one I have is a Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 which has an i5-2410m CPU, Intel HD 3000 graphics core and a dedicated nVidia GT 550m GPU (this laptop is going to be decommissioned and donated). The second laptop is a Dell Latitude 3540 with an i5-4200u, Intel HD 4400 graphics core and dedicated Radeon HD 8850m GPU. The 3rd (recently purchased) laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 with a quad core i5-6300HQ, Intel HD 620 graphics core and nVidia GTX 960m.

I have not experienced anything like what is being described in this thread whether I am using the integrated Intel HD graphic cores or the AMD / nVidia dedicated GPUs. Note the Intel HD 3000 only support up to DirectX 10, so selecting DirectX 11 is not an option. However, I have tested both Intel HD 4400 and Intel HD 620 in DirectX 9 and 11.

You should still be able to play STO using the laptop since the nVidia GT 240m supports DirectX 10. However, since it is not very powerful, it's probably best to play STO at either 1366x768 or 1600x900 resolution. It definitely cannot run the game in DirectX 11 mode because the GT 240m lacks the hardware to do so.

This is so wrong. DX10 hardware will be supported unless you use win 10. Oddly it says you need dx11 hardware for win 10. Vista and win 7 needs dx10.0 hardware. No idea why win 10 requires dx11. So damn confusing. The GT240m is dx10.1.

    That is odd...

I don't have any problems or get any pop-up messages when I play STO on one of my old laptops running Win 10 with an Intel HD 3000 graphic core which only supports up to DX10.

I said she should get a second opinion as I was not sure.. Hmm. Could the graphical tearing be caused by another issue then?

And they didn't post that a message would be displayed for that. Check what they posted below.
After December 5, 2016, if you are running on Windows XP or using Direct3D 9, or using a Video Card with a Direct3D Hardware Feature Level less than 10.0, the launcher will inform you of that fact.

Later in their post they said as below.
What Operating System should I be upgrading to?
For the best play experience, Cryptic Studios recommends Windows 10. Note that you will need a Video Card that supports Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 11.0 or better to play on Windows 10.

That is fairly specific. It's just another point about their confusing post. Rereading it i now understand i read it wrong as it's just stating what operating system to upgrade to and what's best play experience. So i took it out of context. Perhaps to avoid confusion it should instead be something like this.

"What Operating System should I be upgrading to?
Cryptic Studios recommends Windows 10. Note that for best play experience you will need a Video Card that supports Direct3D Hardware Feature Level 11.0 or better."

I get this bug too. It occurs in all kinds of places, I've had it in sector space, in Foundry missions and on a fleet starbase.

I accidentally found a workaround for it: type "/fpsgraph 1" in the chatbox to turn on the FPS diagnostic graph, and the bug stops. I don't know why this should be, can anyone else guess?

Incidentally, I'm using DirectX 9 too. I'm using Windows Vista and a graphics card called Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family. The card doesn't support 11, it does support 10 but, though they're not saying 10 won't be supported when the patch arrives, there's currently no option in STO's settings for 10, only 9 or 11. Any idea where that leaves things?
