Ok first off I love this game it's great being your own caption and contorting your ship with that being sayed now to what matters
Tactical class ships can get cannons
Science class ships some are able to have cannons
Engineering class ships can't have cannons
So my thoght here is engineering class carrier class and some science class ships should be able to run Omni directional beams full set turn right on most of those ships are so horrible they would easily compensate by having Omni directional beams to protect themselves I would like those classes to be able to have a full set of Omni directional beams for weapons on the ship
Plz make comments and tell me you thoghts let's try make this real for us

Turn rate is a moot point as you can load up the Pilot skill tree and have a +40% turn rate so no need for Omni Beams all around. Also the damage decrease from Omni beams vs even standar 270 degree beam arrays is horrid, even at Mk XIV. If you want to build a beam boat, try doing beam arrays and master broadsiding, so instead of spending all your time keeping the enemy in your front 90 degree arc (which NPC character will kinda try and get out of), just fly big circles around them with all your beams hitting them in the side 90 degree arc that overlaps your front and rear. But a cruiser doing all 8 beam arrays will be a bit of a drain on your weapon power which will decrease your damage output, so be ready to do a specific build that favors power transfer rates.
That being said (again assuming a budget build), buy a couple of RCS consoles from the exchange and throw those in a couple engineering slots, but you also want to boost power flow with regulators. Make sure your tactical consoles ALL match your beam flavor. Spec out your pilot skill tree and make it active primary or secondary to get bonus to turn rate. Finish your reputations to level 5 and you pick up a space trate from Delta (I think) that's a turn rate buff.
For bridge officer skills, make sure you slot 1 Emergency power to weapons (either ens or lt, not worth lt com), and Aux to Batt in a lt slot (also make sure you picked up and made ACTIVE 3 engineering technicians for duty officers) (good Aux 2 Batt build or Dragon build for the why). If you do the above, run TWO beam fire at will's (lt and lt com or lt and ens) (again do the search to see the why that works) and at least one tactical team.
Run you power settings heavy to weapons, and let engine level do whatever it wants. With the Space Skill, Pilot Skill, and RCS consoles you should end up around 20-30 degree a second turn rate (depending on particular cruiser and your default inertia).
Tactic:
Charge at enemy and hit:
Tactical Team
Emergency Power to Weapons
Directed Energy Modulation (if you have it)
Torpedo Spread (or High Yield)
Beam Fire at will
Aux to Batt
(do all the above BEFORE entering firing range)
Fire
Turn around enemy (chase camera setting helps), and then keep turning (clockwise for example) around him to keep them centered in your 90 degree broadside. When the shield facing weakens too far, loop around the other direction (now circling counter clockwise) so you are hitting him with a fresh shield but still broadsiding.
Rinse, wash, repeat.
You basically want an 'I win' button. Gone are the days where people actually flew around and did stuff. Now most just park and spam the space bar macro now.
"Money for nothin' and chicks for free." Yeah, doesn't work like that in STO (why, it almost does, but that's another topic). Seriously, 'some work required.'
P.S. Punctuation is your friend.
Anyone want to give me a Temporal Heavy Dreadnought pack? I'll be your friend
Doable, but not optimal.
I there's a limit to how many omni-directional beam arrays you can install regardless of the energy type?
My character Tsin'xing
do that with the phaser point defense console and the bvengeance's broadside console for maximum 'holy TRIBBLE' visual coolness
