Another snowfall, another Winter Event. I look forward to the races, the new ship...what is the new ship? I hope it's a T6 Chel Grett. I loved that ship and it's a damn shame that it's only T5U.
The Breen were pathetic TRIBBLE who only dared to side with the winning side in the Dominion War. Even the Romulans from the Star Empire acted more honourable. Attacking defenceless worlds while the fleets are away, grabbing Cardassian territory which they probably wouldn't have been able to do if the Founders didn't do it for them / backed them.
They may have been fanatical fighters, that only shows they were crazy enough to die in conquest-related wars. Maybe it's due to a lack of exploration of their culture and motivations, but I always thought they were just TRIBBLE, dishonourable and opportunistic ones even.
Unless something is actually done with them (and I mean more than serving as cannon fodder or ship suppliers), I couldn't care less about Breen ships.
I do believe that the next ship will be a Breen 'Science' ship.

I doubt it would be Andorian as the Andorians are a Federation species, and thus not a good choice for a CROSS FACTION ship. My ECs are on a new Breen design, a Vorgon ship, or something totally new.
I'll have to start prepping the Tips and Tricks 2016 thread to head off the "fastest game on ice is too hard" threads we get every year.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

Well since we're all part of the Alliance and with the storyline bringing us even closer together, it could be possible.
Especially since we're not talking about Starfleet ships, but member ships. We already have Xindi ships available for the other factions.
And of course Andorians and Klingons are not that different in some respects so it would be a good start to merge the factions. Or - perhaps more accurate - a good continuation of the change they made when they released the 31st century ship pack.

What is with the current fetish of science ships. Why do all impending ships have to be science.
Newsflash: all the breen ships have had science leanings as far as the traits, consoles, seating, console slots... Its time for a strait up tactial shredder, with 2 Science console slots for universal consoles.
I can't wait to get my Temporal Recruit to get the clearing 'Mission' that opens up the Winter Event Store. Got a hunch of stuff to pick up right away. She will be the designated participant for the Winter games this year.
When I first started doing the Winter Event three years ago, I could not win or even complete the daily race. I gave up and was going to just bypass the Event. Thanks to reading advice from people on here, I tried a technique. So after losing about six days I gave it another go. Been doing fine ever since.
What I do is run full bore and jigger around lazy turns. But for the tighter ones, just double click the 'W' key and somersault into the turn. Get up and go again.

Last year was the first time I ever participated in the race for the "Free" ship. I sucked at first but I got better. Just in time, too. The Space Lobster was fun to fly as soon as I figured out how to use such a great fat whale of a ship. Looking forward to this year as well. The Epohh Overlords tell me they have something special coming soon for me. Have they heard my pleas, then? Will this be the year I get promoted from Mindless Follower/Meat Shield to Assistant Junior Acolyte Third Class(Probationary)? I really am having a difficult time waiting.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
All I want for Christmas is a science ship. Then again, I can just buy the T6 Nebula and be happy.
Nah. We already got a science ship from this year's anniversary. The 2017 Anniversary Event ship would likely be another science vessel since the Lukari seems to be a pretty science oriented society... at least based on the Echoes Of Light mission.
We got an escort for the Risan Summer Event. Therefore, I would like to have a cruiser for the Winter Event. That will give my engineer on my secondary; free to play only; account a T6 ship "appropriate" to the profession to fly.
I doubt it would be Andorian as the Andorians are a Federation species, and thus not a good choice for a CROSS FACTION ship. My ECs are on a new Breen design, a Vorgon ship, or something totally new.

the first event I encountered was the winter event and I was quite shocked to find how easy the other ship events were in comparison.
there is no doubt that it is the most difficult event to do, lets be honest we don't have any "too hard" or "how to do it" threads for the summer or anniversary events.
having said that it is doable, you just have to keep at it until you work out the idiosyncrasies of the race you can exploit to your advantage.
of course the biggest problem is once the event is over you have to wait a whole year till the next one and you need to get back into the rhythm of the race all over again and as you get older you find this much more difficult to archive, add to this the fact that many who might suffer some disability will have more problems and its understandable that there are so many who complain.
I would offer a choice of activities to use as a daily quest as a good alternative be it doing the gingerbread invasion, Cones of Conduct or Tide of Ice as alternative ways to get your daily token for anyone who is having difficulties with the race.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Honestly i could go for a Breen science ship, and not a science leaning ship like the breen science carrier. Though I could also go for seeing them use the Andorian race's ship designs after this as a switch like they did with the Vorgon ships in the summer event. Though I will say we have had a lot of tactical ships an tactical carrier/cruiser ships in the game, most of all compared to how many science ships have been released, which to me would be niue to even out thru a few releases of science/science-leaning ships.
I sincerely hope that the truth in the title and setting of the winter event isn't another sad case of not being able to actually refer to 'Christmas' through fear of offending someone.
Wouldn't it be incredibly patronizing for Q to call his event a "Christmas" festival? Personally I think an omnipotent being with no apparent religious affiliation is better off keeping to his own thing than creating a parody of the traditions of sub-group of one planet. If you happen to belong to that group, then don't worry because he's certainly comfortable lifting themes and iconography. There's no taboos here, all are welcome to enjoy the stuff for what it is.
That's kind of the TRIBBLE point.

Yeah - I guess that makes sense. Still, it is a little odd - it is, for all intents and purposes, a Christmas event that simply isn't called that.
But it's not for all intents and purposes a Christmas event. For that to be the case there would need to be a religious component (see. the first part of the word: Christmas). That's not present, and I think we can all agree that it shouldn't be there, both for in-universe reasons (why is Q celebrating a Christian holiday?) and practical reasons (why label a general event as belonging entirely to one cultural sub group?)
The point is to have a laugh with gags and games inspired by stuff that pervades Western culture for its own sake. Don't complicate it. Winter Event content can mean whatever someone wants to. If for you that's Christmas then you can think about it in that context. I don't think anyone has a problem with that. But for someone who doesn't feel personally connected to Christmas (for whatever reason), then they can just sit back and enjoy the food, prizes, and bad cartoon puns.
Nothing else is necessary to feel a part, it's just good fun.

Great, I've created a flame war thread by accident. I was hoping for civilized discussions about what people thought was coming up.
You are not personally responsible for the comments made by other users. Discussion will happen and for something like this (with deeper connections to dialog in the US, at least) there will be strong opinions. These holidays can mean a lot to people. But that dialog passes. Just focus on the fun you wanted to create in the first place and let the "flames" burn themselves out.
If it really isn't civilized discussion that will reflect on those having it, not you or the other posters in the thread.

Again, I don't disagree - you're absolutely right. I will say one last thing on the matter though; lets be honest here, whether right or wrong, these days Christmas is more of a commercial holiday than a religous one. I suspect that Santa is a better-known symbol of Christmas than Jesus in this day and age.
Anyway - as I said, you are right and I'll leave it at that - I do enjoy the event, and hopefully there'll be some new content attached to it this year.
Personally it's my favorite time of the STO calendar. Actually, scratch that, it's my favorite gaming event of the year (take that E3!)
Anyway, Christmas can easily be seen as having becoming more a cultural rather than exclusively religious holiday. Personally that's the lense I view it in, though I appreciate that it means a lot to people not to lose the religious connection. Whatever else the "commercialization of Christmas" means (cue Linus), I think that generalization is how we're able to have so much fun in STO with content lifted from Christmas specials.
It's great parody material and I can't wait to see what Cryptic has in store this year. I just hope they steer clear of nightmare stuff like this.

And that is why I am going to make it a tradition to make a tips and tricks thread every year, and ask for it to be a sticky for the duration of the event. That way we veteran players can share our knowledge with less experienced players on the various events during the winter event. As I said, every year we get innundated with threads saying "its too hard" and stuff like that. I'm wanting to help in any way I can, so it is easier to consolidate all the tips given from all those threads into one location. I even have a map I made up to show some of the places you can run flat out in a straight line.
But you are right, unlike Risa, we can't really visit Q's Winter Wonderland to brush up on our skills in the off season.
I wish they'd move the event to Andoria already, generic xmas-land is boring and not Trek. I also can't find any appeal in Breen designs, they literally look like someone welded together random scrap metal and called it a ship design.
Well... Andoria is a Fed only planet. That would exclude KDF. And Andorians aren't exactly known for celebrating a season when their world is kinda perma cold.
Also... its made by Q. So naturally it will be more... interesting.
As for the Breen ships, considering theme they make the most sense. Everything about the Breen says "cold". The fact their ships are so asymetric is... part of the design philosophy established by the one Canon Breen ship seen in DS9. At the very least, think of it as a free account wide admiralty card if you don't want to fly it.

When it comes to Q... nothing is off the table, up to and including living snowmen. Also Andoria is one of the FOUNDING members of the Federation. Allowing KDF to visit one of the four founding member worlds when there's still tension between the two powers... I don't see it happening, even though having something to do on Andoria would be nice.
Unfortunately, as long as Q is involved, that means we get the crazyness that comes with it. Honestly I don't mind myself. I just wish there was a bit more to do with the ice skating, and maybe a bigger lake for it as that is honestly fun. While Q's Winter Wonderland may not come across as particularly Trek, Q has been known to do things off the wall. Remember the Mariachi Band he summoned to the Enterprise-D? And if you read any of the Q Continuum books, he summoned a scale model of DS9 and "docked" a burrito on an upper pylon.
And I believe Risa was opened up to the KDF before the walls fell, around the time they made the FIRST summer event, which I believe was... 4 years ago now? Risian Corvette, Risian Cruiser, Ferengi Nandi, Vorgon... yup. 4 years ago.

I'm not entirely sure if it's in-character for Q to do a christmas festival at all. But if he did, it would definitely be the real deal and he'd call it what it is. He wouldn't do a pretentiously bland 21st century corporate american non-christmas festival, except maybe to intentionally mock the concept.
That means that most people probably wouldn't recognise it anyway. Even if you leave out the corporate thingy.
As Christmas is mostly fake (for lack of a better word) and pretentious, especially the so-called 'christian' version which has nothing to do with the original concept. I can't believe there are still people (as in the first page of this thread) who still pretend or think that Christmas was invented so to say by christians or that it has its roots in christian traditions.
Or that any deviation from the christian version is a bad one - the christian version itself is a deviation from the original concept. For those who know history, there's no good reason to consider the christian version the 'good' one and everything else, be it corporate influences or whatever, bad or worse.
I rarely hear the more 'traditional' Christmas Carols (Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful etc for example) anymore, and I do actually love those.
I play in a Brass Band, something that most people actually associate with Christmas Carols - and whilst we do play the traditional carols they do seem to be slowly losing ground to sheet-music versions of more modern 'pop' Christmas music.
I personally loathe everything to do with Santa Claus. It's part of why I like TSO's takes on Christmas music. It's not overtly religious, but it respects the actual reason for the holiday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvvE7Uxb8Ts
