Same here... was bad before Artifacts, and now I cannot leave events like Red Alerts or the Crystalline Catastrophe without a freeze during map change.
Had this along with a host of other problems last weekend. Finally reset everything to the Default settings. Next I went back in and adjusted each of them back to what works best on my laptop. I had to check every single one of them, too. Lighting v2.0 starts from a baseline assumption about your graphic settings and GPU. Which in my case were incorrect. Once I readjusted everything to what I wanted, no more problems. My laptop is an older machine, HP Pavilion 17. I got the unexpected benefit of it running much cooler, with a far more consistent framerate, and a lot less stutter and lag than before Lighting v2.0.
Check ALL your Settings under Options. One or more of them will be different from what you like or can run. Which is probably what is causing the problems.

The problem is that there are so many settings that basically it's hours of trial and error trying to figure out which setting might be wrong. I finally just gave up and stopped playing.

Didn't take that long. I think all told it took me about maybe forty minutes. I wasn't clock watching though so I am uncertain as to the exact time. So the hours and hours because of so many settings thing is a load of B.S. put out by someone who wants someone else to feel sorry for him. Okay, here goes.
"Awww poor baby! Little precious isn't smart enough to figure out which of the settings the big mean game company uses, so he can't play STO any more? Boo-frakkin'-hoo."

I have this problem too. Didn't have this problem ever before the update. My client keeps freezing at 42% loading into a new zone. Drivers are up to date; not sure what settings I am supposed to be changing to play a game that has worked for me the past four years!
Yes the memory limit woks, but dont solve the problem for me at least let me change character for a while but the crashing in loading screen appears again, i think the devs let this and dont solve because are very few of us whit this problem so i think the game remaining in this way, sad for this
i am also experiencing problems with game freeze and then crashing to desktop issues.
noted the report:
Direct3Ddriver returned error code (DXGL_Error_Device_Removed) while presenting reason:
0x887a0006 (DXGI_ Error_Device_Hung)
I have done a verify and I reset the game graphics to default but all the same, no change.
only experienced this problem since last update/patch where ironically the notes state "•Resolved an issue which was occasionally causing a crash when changing graphic settings." makes me wonder if there is something in this change/fix that is causing the almost constant map change crashes.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
after some searching in the settings I finally realised the wrong version of directx was selected, the lowest version was selected instead of directx11 I am guessing that during the last patch the setting must have been corrupted somehow or reset to the default.
after changing this I have found the game is running smoothly again, no more freezes or crashing to desktop on map changes or at any other time, for now at least until the next time.
