Depth of field too shallow in the tailor and ship tailor

Holodeck ticket 4,134,293 (submitted on 10/27/2016)

The depth of field is too shallow in the tailor and ship tailor, blurring the background. This bug was introduced with the release of "Agents of Yesterday: Artifacts".

This problem also affects the contact window. See the bug report below.

2. Visit a tailor.
3. Enter the following command in the chat window to take a screenshot with the UI:

/screenshot_ui_jpg

4. Enter the following command in the chat window to take a screenshot without the UI:

/screenshot_jpg

5. Visit a ship tailor, and repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 on a Klingon character.
7. Repeat steps 2 through 5 on a Romulan character.
8. Compare your screenshots with the "Before" images above.

Graphics settings

After the release of "Agents of Yesterday: Artifacts", I restored my graphics settings to the way they were before the patch, and I turned "Lighting 2.0" off. Note that, before "Agents of Yesterday: Artifacts", a bug caused the "Advanced" tab to always display "Bloom intensity" as 57%. The actual value of GfxSettings.BloomIntensity in my gameprefs.pref file was 0.2.

I was able to reproduce this, but only with the old lighting system and when screen-space ambient occlusion is disabled. I'll pass it on to crypticmeow. Note that if you re-enable screen-space ambient occlusion, you may need to restart the game before you notice the changes in the tailor windows.

Interesting. Yes, I usually run with "Screen-space ambient occlusion" turned off. Good thing I included my graphics settings in the bug report.

I'm not sure it's accurate to talk about the "old lighting system" though, unless you mean the lighting system before "Agents of Yesterday: Artifacts" (AoY:A). Even with "Lighting 2.0" turned off and all other settings the same, I see plenty of differences compared to before AoY:A. I think that enough changes were made to the underlying graphics code that there's really only

    (a) the new lighting system with "Lighting 2.0" turned on

    and

    (b) the new lighting system with "Lighting 2.0" turned off.

The old lighting system only exists in builds from before AoY:A.

True, they did add enhanced dynamic lighting as standard to the non Lighting 2.0 system for DX11 and appear to have made other changes under the hood so 'old lighting system' is probably inaccurate.

I decided to retest this bug. I'm seeing different behavior from what khamseenair reported. I'm not sure whether that's due to differences in our graphics settings, differences in our computer specs, or changes to the code that were made in Season 12.

    1. Contrary to what khamseenair said, I'm not seeing any differences whether "Screen-space ambient occlusion" is on or off.

    2. In the ship tailor, I see a blurry background whether "Lighting 2.0" is on or off and whether "Screen-space ambient occlusion" is on or off.

    3. When "Lighting 2.0" is off, I see a blurry background the first time I visit the tailor. Changing the tailor lighting temporarily fixes the issue, even if you simply reselect "Default Lighting". If you exit and reopen the tailor once, the issue will remain fixed. However, if you exit and reopen the tailor twice, the issue will return.

    4. When "Lighting 2.0" is on, I see a star field the first time I visit the tailor. Changing the tailor lighting causes the star field to disappear; it gets replaced by a completely blank background. This happens even if you simply reselect "Default Lighting". If you exit and reopen the tailor once, the blank background is still there. However, if you exit and reopen the tailor twice, the star field will return.

I'm not sure why the tailor requires you to exit and reopen it twice in order to reset the lighting state.

As of March 15, 2017, the ship tailor no longer displays a blurry background on Tribble, and the regular tailor works the same way regardless of whether "Lighting 2.0" is on or off, though the way it works doesn't make a whole lot of sense. On Tribble, the tailor now consistently exhibits the "disappearing star field" behavior that I noted earlier.
