Almost forgot. The game Star Trek:Armada II has files for each of the ship types in that game. A great many ships from that game are present in STO. It is easy to pull/open a ship file from the game and check the name list in the file for something suitable. I haven't tried this yet with any of the Starfleet Command series, but it should be just as simple to do. The little bit I remember from looking into the SFC I files is a lot of Klingon ships are named after notable people of the Empire and the KDF.
EDIT:
Told you about the files and forgot to tell you how to get to them. In STA2 the specific file types all have an <.ODF> extension. They can be opened with Notepad. It does not matter if you change them from Read Only or not. Copy/Paste will work anyways. Pretty sure the ship files from SFC I and SFC II can be opened the same way but I do not remember the file names or extensions. Star Trek: Legacy uses the same file format as Star Trek: Armada II. So there is another resource for names. The part about the names from these files I like is they are soft canon since I do RP lightly from time to time.
U.S.S. Viracocha = Creator god from Incan mythology / Captain Aeris = Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII, which was spelled Aeris in some releases (Earth Spacedock (RP): Page 60)

Not gonna lie, I'm not an appreciator of FF, but that's some really cool reference pulls As an FF FYI, back in 2000 when I worked in a video store, one of the regulars was the spitting image of Quistis Trepe... Pretty quiet and unfriendly, and never spoke beyond the business at hand (her boyfriend was actually a really nice guy who always chatted) but she was certainly easy on the eye
A handful of my characters, Ardrian Dareau, Julin Eurthyr, Annlova, Shara, are from my old D&D days.
Krudge and S'Leth, and by transposition T'Leth, are from when I roleplayed/storytold in the SFC forums.
Jadja is for my aunt who passed away battling cancer, Bravely Bold Sir Robin is my one and only "truly" intentional rip-off, and Selek was something I was batting around for a second Vulcan until the sounding out of the name latched onto "Tom Selleck" and his name was solidified.
I don't mess with BOff names too much, only "real intentional" homages I have in my BOff crew are when I rename them after other D&D characters I used to encounter, or a theme strikes me (Eurthyr, Federation Engineer, has 3x initial Dareau, where the initial was the name that the game slapped her with - and all three are Trill BOffs. Then there's my Androids, which I pull from cartoons - IQ9 from Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato's Analyzer) and Janice Em (Robotech).
Shipwise, since my days in SFC, one guy had a ship named after an obscure Deep Purple song, and I went with a different obscure song instead - Little Paradise. Every one of my toons, for their "main flagship", tends to fly the Little Paradise. I do play with themes for their "levelling ships", though. Usually they're songs, but my Engie who flew "Enterprise" cruisers from 1-50 flew the Windscry at every level (except when he couldn't nab the Excelsior, so he flew the Silent Lucidity). My "dragon" from D&D flew the metallic dragons (bronze dragon, Copper Dragon, etc.) while levelling, and her "older" flag the Armitage is the USS Bahamut, and her Hestia is the Tiamat, and Bravely Bold Sir Robin flew with names inspired from his source, one ship was the RIS Chicken Shield, his flag is the RIS HHG Antioch...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...
To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]
Captain Joar Markent, Andorian, commanding USS Argo City. Joar is named for DC Comics supervillain Icicle while his ship is named for Kara Zor- El's home city.
Another DC inspired character, my only female character, M'gann, named for Miss Martian (soon to be seen in live action form on Supergirl), neice of Martian Manhunter... kind of. She flies the USS Excalibur, one of my few mythological references.
"Crash Override" aka Captain Kovari, commanding USS Steve Rodgers.
General Quex- Ul commanding IKS Rozhenko. Quex- Ul is one of few named Phantom Zone criminals in "pre- Crisis" DC Comics.
Hmm, I do have a very large percentage of comic book/superhero based references among both characters & ships, but there are other sources.
@marcusdkane (Quotes don't work on mobile. Bare with me)
When I made Maenek, I sat down with a theasarus and a few English-Romulan dictionaries. Maenek, I believe is Doctor and Su'keah was the closet equivlent to Tardis I could get at the Romulan equivlent of "Time and Relative Universe in Space" since I couldn't find Dimension in Romulan.
I may have the spellings off a bit as it has been awhile since I've played the character, but that was my general idea behind the character. I've also got multiple costumes on the character that I've tried to replicate from the 53 years of the series.

D&D was something I never really 'got' (although I did love the cartoon as a child) but defintely cool that you took there references from it Marcus' childhood best friend was also a Vulcan named Selek The only ship name I've 're-used', was Cara's contemporary Connie, the USS Devonshire-C, which is supposed to be a successor to the Kirk-era USS Devonshire I once featured in a story (Ironically, I never wrote about it as much as I thought I might, although I am tempted to roll another AOY toon to actually do the original )
[Edit to add]The Devonshire-C is the one ship I regret not bring able to use more. IMHO, the rebuild options perfectly capture the feel of the original, so is true Star Trek Magic, but even with higher-tier loads, it can't really stand up to the more advanced opponents, and the BOFF slots simply don't allow for the best use of their traits, so it just sits around, rately seeing action beyond travelling from Point A to Point B, where nothing bad can happen to it

lol Nice. Those FF char names are from wayyy back when I was playing it. I just carried those Trek characters over to STO from fanfic. I tend to name a lot of my BOFFs after anime chars now.

It could just be that she suffered from Resting B:tch Face, but she certainly never made any effort of speaking about anything other than the matter at hand, so I think safe to say just a snotty chick who skated through life on her looks...
Putting fanfic characters into the game has definitely yielded some interesting results... Some of them, I can't get to look 100% as I want. Some I can tolerate, some, it was too much of a disconnection to my view of the character, so I dismissed them... Lucas, for example, not 100% as I want, but a good 80%, and when I decided to re-run a Borg mission for the grinding, he was actually very useful on the ground... My view is that thie game occurences are now 2-3 years on from the events of Academy Daze, and he's overseeing how new technologies are being installed on Federation vessels... A civilian observer, rather than an officer, but a damn useful individual to have on board

I'm not too hung up on getting it exact. But I used to draw my fanfic characters, and I just approximated their STO versions based on that. The hair was the hardest.

Ahhh, that's very cool, thank you for explaining A while back, I saw the 10th Doctor hanging out in the hallway near Lt Ferra

I can see the approach you've gone for in capturing the essence of the character, rather than 100% specific details I think the thing I find frustrating, is when I know that I could recreate a face, if the customizing sliders just had a little extra range, such as being to put eyes a smidge closer together, or a head a bit narrower (which can be cheated a little by increasing head height, but still not 100% ideal...)
On the flipside, I was able to get Ael exactly as she is in my mind's eye
My KDF orion flies R.R.W Nibiru, her previous ship was named Bat'leth
My romulan tac Captain flies currently I.K.S D'vex, his previous ships has been named Malem and General Xiopek
My fed tac Captain's previos ship was U.S.S Solaris (currently she switches between U.S.S Brilliance or U.S.S Solstice)
My newly created fed engineer just got the command of U.S.S. Asimov
My Fed sci captain's ships always end with -nce (curretly she commands U.S.S Valiance)
All right, settle in folks, this is going to take a while.
On a general note, I will say that I try to follow existing naming conventions and canon, hard or soft, as much as possible; I frequently consult Memory Beta for (Federation) ship names and registry numbers, and Klingon and Romulan dictionaries when necessary. My shuttles are all named for astronomers, astronauts and explorers, and my runabouts for rivers (mostly Earth ones). Most of my starting Mirandas have been named, randomly or not, for gods; I've had command of the Osiris, Thoth, Hestia, etc.
My "main main", a Fed engineer, commands the Sovereign-class (internally refit to Regent specs) U.S.S. Discovery, following the long line of ships and starships named so in honor of Cook's historic vessel. He's got the gold models of all of 'em in the observation lounge (and drawings of the sailing vessel and shuttle), and a rather familiar-sounding quote from Cook on the plaque: "Ambition leads me not only farther than any other man has been before me, but as far as I think it possible for man to go."
His first command was Osiris, above, followed by the Constitution refit U.S.S. Endeavour (another name with a long lineage, including a shuttle). He's also done short tours aboard the Excelsior-class U.S.S. Challenger (by now you should be noticing the pattern) and the Galaxy-class Odyssey II (replacement for the Dominion War's first loss, and also a wink at the classic video game console). Somewhere he picked up two more ships of the Constitution type for his Admiralty deck: the Exeter-class refit U.S.S. Ticonderoga, and the classic U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard, NCC-1712, (sub)class ship for the "series" version of the Big E. His runabout is the Willamette (the river I live near in RL) and his shuttle is the Pike (yes, as in Christopher).
My main Science captain flies the Titan-class U.S.S. Europa; as typical of the class, her crew is exceptionally diverse (she has all the bonus bridge officers, and some of the doffs too). Her runabout, more or less at random, is the Thames, and her shuttle is the Cousteau. Her first assignment was to the Nova-class U.S.S. Solstice (astronomical events), followed by the U.S.S. Moraine (Horizon-class, natural boundaries); the Intrepid-class U.S.S. Dolphin (from Memory Beta, a research submarine); and brief assignments aboard the Dyson-class U.S.S. Cochrane and the Obelisk carrier U.S.S. Menhir.
My Andorian Admiral (my only "actual" admiral) is usually chained to a desk these days, but when he can, he uses the (George) Washington-A as his flagship. He served aboard the original Akira-class vessel since the Dominion War, first as a young officer and then as captain, shepherding the ship through many voyages and a series of refits and upgrades (Thunderchild and Armitage specs), until it was finally lost during the defense of Earth against the Iconians. The new ship is built to Alita-class specs, and has only recently come out of the yards. Both had this quote about Washington on their dedication plaque(s): "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." Naturally, the ship's runabout is the Potomac.
My security Ensign serves aboard the U.S.S. Gettysburg (A), an Excelsior-class that I didn't name myself (it was already in service with her RP fleet). She's been known to fly the shuttle Hadfield (after Chris Hadfield, astronaut).
My newest character died at Caleb IV, when the U.S.S. Curie (Pioneer-class, named for Marie Curie) was lost with all hands... or so history records. Another officer with a very similar face has turned up recently, aboard the Akira-class (internal refit to T6 specs) U.S.S. Kongo (for the Japanese battleship, one of the few non-American ships in the original lineup of Constitutions). Back in the 23rd, she once flew the Type-F shuttle Hernandez, named for the captain of NX-02 Columbia. Her current runabout, fittingly for someone who's been through so much weirdness, is the Miskatonic. And then there was that time she showed up with a Kobali Samsar with Solonae/Dyson-style hull plating, the Shangri-La... except that never happened.
And now, the non-Feddies!
Trokh, son of Kadesh, has the honor of commanding the Qa'Tel-class Koloth, named for the great Dahar Master... but it was not always so. He began his service to the Empire aboard the Somraw-class raptor Quch'HoH ("joyful murder", more or less), then was given command of the Qorgh-class Qul mI'wI' ("fire dancer"). He rose to command of Koloth when he (the ship) was a Qin-class, and it was there that much of Trokh's own glory was won. During that vessel's refit to its current configuration, he "borrowed" IKS qoH HoHwI' ("fool killer", a warning to any who would underestimate a fully-modernized K't'inga). It is also recorded that an ancestor of his, of the same name, once commanded the D7 May'Bom ("battle song").
(Both Trokh's name, and that of his father, are references themselves - the first to the language used by one of the alien races in Traveller, the old tabletop sci-fi RPG, and the latter to the ancient and/or Biblical city. I thought both had the right sort of sound for Klingon names.)
My Gorn - a retired (honest!) senior captain who is definitely not an undercover agent for Naval Intelligence and the Resistance - is master of the S.S. S'Yahazah, after the revered Egg-Bringer; this humble Tuffli-class freighter does not have any surprises hidden in its hold or engine room. That sort of thing is reserved for the charcoal-grey-on-wow-that's-black Risian corvette Eclipse (a very useful ship for an "honest merchant captain" who is also Not a Spy). His last naval command was a Zilant-class battleship, whose name would translate as "Resplendent Dawn", until it was blown out from under him during the final push on the homeworld; when I want to represent it in game (i.e., whenever I want to run STFs, events, or anything besides doffing), I use a Vor'cha with Honor Guard gear to give it the proper Gornish colors. (I imagine that Gorn ship names, like those from HALO, are actually quite poetic in their own language.) I'd love to get an actual, flyable Zilant.
... oh, and just for kicks, I went and named his free Samsar the Yamato. (It kind of has that look, conning tower and all, especially if you take off the front mandibles; if only I could mount a Mat'Ha's spinal cannons in their place.) Go ahead, imagine a Gorn in the full old-fashioned captain's uniform, with black overcoat, white peaked cap and everything. Glorious, is it not?
And then there's my Nausicaan pirate... who does not fly Nausicaan vessels, and not just because their selection is so limited, but because I prefer BoPs for him. I do own a Vandal-class destroyer, and include it in his backstory as the ship he served on (the "Ripper") before signing on with the KDF for a steady paycheck. He actually used to be part of Trokh's crew, until that honorable Klingon saw his true nature and kicked him off his ship; but ever the cunning opportunist, this cutter managed to find new employment with one of the more "flexible" houses. They gave him a ship of his own, the Norgh-class I.K.S. Hag'lhr, and they've been getting deniable "results" - and their cut - ever since. ("Hag'lhr" was random, and I doubt it means anything in Klingon or Nausicaan, but it sounds so much like "Haggler" that I couldn't resist.)
My first Romulan commands the Mogai-class R.R.W. Vauthil ("victory", and I swear I picked it long before the Mirror Event came out), and carries the Kestrel runabout Umhi ("sharp"). The other also flies a Mogai, the R.R.W. Nihnakelh ("final/decisive", as in blow).
Finally, there is M'aiq, who some call a liar; his usual response is to urge his audience to question everything they hear, including what he says. A traveller and independent merchant usually found plying the trade lanes alone, in his Ferengi-made shuttle, the Fishy Stick ("it loses something in the translation"), the eccentric and enigmatic Caitian has sometimes turned up as a passenger aboard, or even in temporary command of, a bewildering variety of vessels: the Federation starships U.S.S. Paragon (Exeter refit, a nod to dearly-remembered Paragon City, the City of Heroes), U.S.S. Clarke (Deep Space Science Vessel, "the shoe", named for Arthur C.), and U.S.S. Feynman (Dyson-class, named for the physicist); two massive Breen ships, the Alduin (Rezreth class) and Akatosh (Sarr Thein); the Bengal, a orange-and-black tiger-striped Risian corvette; and the Kobali Samsar-class cruiser Croatoan.
I've found military history provides a good choice of names.
Battleships and Cruisers- 18th and 19th century British battles
Escorts- Destroyers and fighters
Science- Elite British WW2 units
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
-Lord Commander Solar Macharius
Oh, going through my toons today I was reminded of one I forgot - my Vulcan Engineer, Tarvek, who was named both for the vaguely Vulcan sound of the name and for Tarvek Sturmvoraus, a Spark, one of the contenders for the Throne of the Storm King, and wannabe contender for the hand of Agatha Heterodyne in the webcomic Girl Genius. (Wonder if I should make my next toon a Human Engi and name him Gilgamesh Wulfenbach?)
Unfortunately Captain Nolan does not fly Defiance
That's a fair few ships for someone with so few posts, welcome to the forum I really like your 'nce' rule, that's nicely whimsical

Wow, so many cool concepts and references, I'm really going to have to up my game creatively
I've found military history provides a good choice of names.
Battleships and Cruisers- 18th and 19th century British battles
Escorts- Destroyers and fighters
Science- Elite British WW2 units
Excellent source materials, thank you for sharing them
Oh, going through my toons today I was reminded of one I forgot - my Vulcan Engineer, Tarvek, who was named both for the vaguely Vulcan sound of the name and for Tarvek Sturmvoraus, a Spark, one of the contenders for the Throne of the Storm King, and wannabe contender for the hand of Agatha Heterodyne in the webcomic Girl Genius. (Wonder if I should make my next toon a Human Engi and name him Gilgamesh Wulfenbach?)
That's a cool notion ^_^ I rolled a new AOY toon this afternoon solely to see what un-equipped low-grade parts I could score to mail over to Ael to keep her a step ahead of the curve. (and vice versa with contemporary crew) I originally planned to do my 23rd C captain Rufus Bates, and the USS Devonshire, but this time round, I wasn't given the option to choose Constitution Class, so I hit delete and started crafting again... This one, starting from the default settings, reminded me of Armie Hammer, and the inspiration then took hold to go with 'fictional Russian references'... So we have the Vladivostok-hailing lieutenant-in-command Illya Grigoryevich Karamazov, in command of the USS Korolev, with the Polish Florentyna Kowalczyk as a tactical officer. The other crew members will be jettisoned as soon as the game allows Illya to access mail and import the 25th C recruits he has waiting

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.

Awesome

My romulan tac Captain flies currently I.K.S D'vex, his previous ships has been named Malem and General Xiopek
My fed tac Captain's previos ship was U.S.S Solaris (currently she switches between U.S.S Brilliance or U.S.S Solstice)
My newly created fed engineer just got the command of U.S.S. Asimov
My Fed sci captain's ships always end with -nce (curretly she commands U.S.S Valiance)
Unfortunately Captain Nolan does not fly Defiance
