@antonine3258: A "probably, maybe not". I like that approach to the prompt. Nice little story.
Thanks!
Forgot to mention, I also liked the Diane Duane reference. Makes sense that the Romulans would fall back on that after losing so many people to civil war and the supernova (plus it sticks in the Federation anti-gengineering morons' craw, which can only be a good thing).

I'm actually sort of caught up - please enjoy Desert Blossoms for the 'I am Your Son' prompt
Thoroughly enjoyed that I haven't read the Romulan Way, but it did remind me of another sci-fi story I read a while back, , but can't quite remember the title... It might be Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C Clarke, but I have a feeling it might be another I read at the same time... No matter... Very nicely done

Oh - I've read that, it's been a while. I forgot Clarke did it. It was a fascinating 'lost colony' story.
I do recommend the boxed set for the Rihannsu novels. Though I will pretty much heartily recommend anything Diane Duane has done for the Star Trek novel lines (Dark Mirorr, incidentally, is a great view of a Mirror Universe set in opposition to TNG themes). The Romulan Way has a lot of fascinating themes.
The early use of cloning was sort of offhand. The Romulans were Vulcans at the time - genetic banks and artificial wombs help make sure the new homeworld didn't end up in a genetic diversity trap, even if only one or two ships made it through, but it also explains rapidly populating a new world given they were still subject to the pon farr fertility cycle.

A cycle which they later excised from their genome entirely, I might add. The Roms were pretty big into applied genetic science and apparently never had the problems that Earth and the Klingons did.
@hawku001x I don't exactly know what I just read, but... lol lives up to your antics!
I've gone too far this time.
Was that Admiral Nat thing a reference to those new articles on ST Expanded Wiki?

Yeah. There was a kind of a cold war with admiralnat's character in the Spacedock RP thread a while back where he and another poster one-upped each other until Nat achieved Q powers. The char went OP, but the ref is all in good fun.

This was something that occurred to me a year or two ago while reading the Dewa log articles on the wiki, and I've referenced obliquely a few times from other species more willing to seek advantage:
Given the Klingon willingness to dabble, the Orion's long history, indolence, and power dimorphism indicating interesting times, the Romulan's light genetic editing, Gorn eugenics on caste distribution, the Borg constant seeking for perfection through biological and technological means, and pretty much everything with the Dominion and Iconian manipulation of their servitor races....
At least in STO canon, the Federation's hat is practically an opposition to transhumanist philosophy.

Alright, October is right around the corner. Who's up for number 28?
I've got this one all ready.

Certainly, not every story needs to take the prompt literally, and that was a nice twist, Scarlet. Sweet of her to help out that street urchin, and I wonder if we might meet her again.

I am so borrowing the cloning idea for my Romulan stories, as it makes sense that they might do it, as they did long ago. Maybe acquire some Vulcan genes, with permission, to throw into the mix...
A Trill, a Gorn, a Jem'Hadar, Bejoran and a Voth walk into a bar, and the Bartender asks "What is this a Joke?"
"Nope, just my away team" the trill replies before ordering a round for the bar.
Thank you for reading! ^_^ I still have a lot of catch-up to do.
@starswordc - That's a good question. I am not a fan of making characters I won;t use again. I mean, I have on occasion to be sure. Yet, working on this piece took some time, mostly in the development. I was attached to the prompt but was uncomfortable that Kathryn had a child naturally. So, on the twist, the child would come to her. As the scene was playing out on paper, it was getting longer than I prefer to write and I wanted to avoid the "and then what" if I wrote out that Kathryn met the girls family. So, in my style, I left that hanging.
Which points to the question: will the girl be seen again? I really want to give an non-committal "yes".

And she's appeared before! muahahahahahaha
Edit: It'll be perfect when we get the k-13 bridge officers too, since I plan o making her a Boff.
I'm getting worse at this. I also tweaked the prompt, yet I hope you enjoy!
Cast for crew:
Kathryn Beringer - Rachel Nichols
Bur'ar - David Ramsey
The girl - Maisie Williams
Cardassian vendor 1 - Alexander Skarsgard
Cardassian vendor 2 - Male street extra 1
Ferengi vendor - Male street extra 2
This was a nice short piece of lending some light in a harsh environment.
