Sector Space: Spawning Inside of Stars?

tacofangstacofangs Member Posts: 2,951 Cryptic Developer
I know people have brought this up to me before, but I'm actually in a place where I can look into these things right now. So. . . If you know a place where, when you go back to Sector Space, you end up inside the collision of a Star, or other wonkiness like this, please tell me what Star is the issue below.

Note that this is not a general sector space thread for "I don't like how dark it is," or "why isn't X planet in SS?" This is specifically about a particular issue that I can probably fix.

Thanks.

I've had it happen at quite a few.

Nukara, New Romulus, Trill and Defera.

I have had this issue happen to me though I can't recall which stars. I will definitely be cognizant in the future and make notes of any further occurrences.

Never realized this was related to specific stars, but it has happened to me. I don't fly near enough to them for it to happen anymore but I'll check tonite a few I think I remember.

Only had it happen once to me, on my AoY character, after the K7 mission.
When I returned to the sector map I was trapped inside the star.

I visited my bridge, and that seemed to fix the problem for me.

Awesome, this has been a real pain in my neck. Sadly I don't remember which except New Romulus.
Know I have stuck in a few stars in the Delta Quadrant aswell.

How are you getting stuck in Trill if there are no missions there?

It happened to me in Alhena system.

The star within the Tekara System in Delta Quadrant grabs me all the time. Especially when it comes to these really giant bright white stars it's easy to park too close to them and when you depart the system you spawn inside the star's collision boundaries.

Once, in alpha quad, I used autonavigate to go from DS9 to Phi system. Ship stopped and was sitting right on the star. Next part I don't really remember if I used transwarp to go to fleet starbase or if I queued for some STF or if I simply disconnected. When I warped back to sector space (it's either from starbase or STF or logging back in) I was trapped in that star. This happened only once so go figure...
There where other places where I was trapped but can't really remember where and how (appart that it was usually at the end of some mission, warping out of system).

    It's a Foundry mission door.

Alhena System. I've only had it happen once, after doing Defense Contract, not Second Star.

The issue is not limited to stars(!). I've had it happen to me at the Klingon Fleet Starbase.

The primary conditions necessary for it to happen seem to be that the "door" to exit to the Orbit Instance allows the ship to be "too close" to the star (or starlike object) such that a ship can be pressed right up against the star when accessing the "door" to shift zones. That location when switching zones then gets recorded (I'm presuming), but without enough specificity/resolution to prevent returning to Sector Space "too close" to the starlike object, thereby making it possible to zone in INSIDE the star (or Klingon Fleet Starbase geometry), which is "impermeable" from the inside, so you can't just fly out of it.

Simplest solution I can think of to globally fix this issue for ALL objects in Sector Space would be to increase the size of the "zone of exclusion" around all stars and objects which would prevent Player ships from approaching them quite so closely. I say this because the issue only occurs when switching zones while "too close" to the geometry of "solid" objects in Sector Space.

On a completely different tangent ... why is it that New Romulus (the planet) does not have the usual "white out" rumble effect when flying too close to the planet's surface, unlike pretty much every other planetary body in the game?

Conversely, the "white out" rumble effect happens over too WIDE a radius around the planetary body in the Crystaline Catastrophe instances, such that it feels like the radius of the atmosphere is DOUBLE the radius of the rocky planetary body.

I mention these things on the off chance that there might be a bit of reusable code involved for collision detection which you might want to have a look at in relation to the problem with getting locked inside of stars (and starbase geometry) in sector space.

Would this include spawning in Sector Space coming out of missions (Red Alerts, Queues, Episodes) and ending up at Sol? I've had this happen with a few Romulan characters for sure. Not stuck in the star, but I have no idea why I'd spawn at Sol when I was previously in the Tau Dewa sector.

    Foundry mission?

I had the same issue in the Orias System after a Foundry mission. It didn't happen all the time though

It hasn't happened to me for a while; I'll try to note the next time I get trapped in a stellar gravity well. I stopped paying much attention to that after discovering I could transwarp out. (Although that would be a right pain if it ever happened in Delta Quad...)

Mostly on the dreaded Delta quadrant patrol missions.

I haven't spawned inside a star but have flown inside one a few times, on autopilot. Don't remember which ones, though.

As a workaround, you can also visit your starship bridge, or swap ships with your shuttle to get unstuck.

Sorry I didn’t record which areas I was in with my latest playthough but I did notice it seemed to happen more with certain types of ships. I never had any problems with command ships but when I play though the missions with Intrepid class ships I got stuck a lot.

It could be fluke but I spend aprox 90% of my time in command crusiers yet almost every single time I get stuck in suns is within the 10% of playtime when I am in a sci ship mostly Intrepids.

I've noticed that, and i doesn't have to be any system in particular, when leaving a map onto sector I actually get stuck in the star itself and can't move unless I transwarp, log off or join a queue. It seems to happen most often in systems aroundthe edge of the map.

I've always been wondering wth subspace fold was good for, until I spawned inside a star. Easiest and quickest work around atm.

If I am in sector space at the Fleet Dillithium mine system, transition to a PvE mission and when I transition back sometimes I'l do it into a star.
