We need to take a step back in ship design

Artistic license is one thing, but lately all of these new ships that are being added to the game are just... ugly. Temporal vessels, Dyson vessels; they all look like Tron in space, not star trek. The kelvin line stuff isnt terrible but it's on the edge.

What happened to classic star trek ship design? This hardly feels like a star trek IP anymore with all of the neon lights.

Not a fan of some of the cryptic designs. The Intel ship's were all pretty terrible. The temporal ships were pretty bad well. I personally don't like the flat pancake look. On the other hand the pilot escorts and command cruisers weren't too bad at least on the fedside.

Like the TOS skins for the temporal ships? The Ranger looks classic to me.

I'll agree that the Dyson, Temporal ships and Intel ships don't look like TOS or TNG ships, but they are not supposed to. But there have been many other Federation ships like the Guardian that do.

The real problem is everyone misguidedly projecting their aesthetic taste/opinion forward as a factual standard by which all ships should be judged.

At this point, most "hero" ships and canon designs of most prominent species of all eras are now in the game, including Cryptic's take on modernizing some canon designs, as well as their wholly original designs.

There's virtually something for everyone now. They're doing it right.

I personally don't like the Temporal ship designs, but I think variety is good for the game. Not everyone solely likes the TOS designs, just as not everyone necessarily likes the TNG designs. I like the Vengeance (and it's my primary ship at the moment), but I know many people don't like the JJ designs. The period in time when we got the original Odysseys, Bortasqu', Pathfinders, etc were, in my opinion, the best blend of old and new designs. I wasn't much of a fan of the subsequent Command ships, but they've grown on me. All in all, I think the ship designs for the game have come a long way. And variety lets everyone live their little dream of commanding their own ship, whatever era.

Temporal Ships though are Derivative of canon designs, being based on the Enterprise J and the Wells class timeship.

Personally I hate the "we need" mentality. I speak for me, and only me. Sometimes I speak for the voices in my head as a group, but try not to do so here. I happen to approve of, and enjoy ALL the ship designs. Different strokes for different folks. Anything that puts money into the game, and keeps the servers online makes me a happy guy.

Because Star Trek acts as a sump, collecting the most narrow-minded and conservative folks in all of sci-fi fandom. The kind of people for whom design aesthetics had damn well better not change even after 50 years...

Ships are definitely a matter of taste...

I know I'm in the minority when I say I dislike the Excelsior (I hate how fat and straight it is)... and the Galaxy, never liked it even when I was watching TNG (it looks like it should fall over because the saucer section is way too big compared to the star drive)... I also dislike the Command ships because of how much the resemble the Excelsior... Although I own all of these ships except the Galaxy... I really like the different looks that Cryptic gives all their ships. There are so many choices, it's great. Ships to meet everyone's taste (except poor Klingon and Romulan lovers

Just remember everyone's taste isn't the same and no one can speak for the entire community.

It's gong to be interesting when the models become available what ships people buy/show off here. My top two that I'm considering are the Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer and the Eclipse Intel Cruiser. Because what people WILL pay for is a lot more important to them than what people won't.

Never said I like all the original designs, I'm not a fan of the galaxy or excelsior either (my personal favorites would be the steamrunner, defiant, and intrepid classes). All I'm saying is that this game is starting to look a little too cartoony for my tastes. It's bad enough that the moment you get into combat you're forced to look at a lightshow that could only be described as an epileptic's worst nightmare, but even out of combat you've got all these glowing lines and parts on your ship that just make no sense.

I upgraded the visuals on my* T6 Temporal Dreadnought Cruiser Chronos Class with temporal skins*.

I won't comment on the other AoY pack ships as the classics to me look really well done and the rest were bound by that hideous enterprise ship of Enterprise series that still ended up not all that bad.

Every ship doesn't have to look like the Enterprise. Which is what most "classic Star Trek" design boils down. Variants of the Enterprise. Enterprise, Bigger Enterprise, Enterprise with a Oval Saucer, Enterprise with a pointy-end Saucer, Enterprise with a giant oversized saucer, Enterprise with 4 Nacelles. Defiant.

I, for one, enjoy the variety of the higher-level ship designs that I've seen.

but then again, my favorite-looking ships are the Warbirds anyway.

Which is why you can implement "ship visuals" and coat them in TOS, TMP or even TN*puke*G skins...

You're not alone in your dislike of the Excelsior and Galaxy. My first thought when I saw both of those ships are "why did they have to run a steamroller over the classic Connie aesthetic and make these squished ships?

At least some of the latter designs (Soverign, Intrepid) with the "chevron" vs "oval" saucers can make the semi-classic lines "look" viable even in this world of "squishiness and streamlining and warp-odynamics"...

I propose (should say insist, but I like breaking forum conventions) that the next set of ships need clearly visible and extremely "straight" necks and pylons interconnecting the parts. But not so obvious like that Discovery deal with the triangular secondary hull of confusion...

I dunno..I think the Romulan Dyson ships look very awesome. The Arbiter class looks very similar to the Fed Dyson but I dont think they look horrible either...To each his own right?
