It's been nearly a week now since the console version of the game was released, and four days since I've had access to it in the UK. I've downloaded, and played, and I've got to be honest, it isn't that bad. I'm a PC LTS member
returning to the game, although with the fresh start on the console of course.
Pros:
- The New Interface
It's easy to use, it's easy to navigate, it's easy to play with.
- The Ground Combat
It's easy, mostly, it's playable, it's actually fun. I didn't like ground on the PC much, but I like it better on the console, oddly.
- The Menu System
Simply because it's well labelled and organised.
Cons:
- There doesn't appear to be a label showing the gender of Bridge Officers on the Exchange.
- There's no makeup option for female Trill Bridge Officers.
- Interaction Button (X) and Jumping
This I think needs some work. Sometimes when I'm trying to jump, the menu will come up instead, and vice versa.
Observations:
- This message: "User XYZ has obtained a Cardassian Keldon or Jem Hadar Dreadnought"
I could do without seeing each and every time one is unlocked. There was a way of turning this off for PC players, as of yet, I haven't found a way to do so as a console gamer. Please add one.
- Ship/Character Zoom
It's not so much a problem with characters (that I've found anyway) but could we have more options for our ships, especially when in sector space? I can barely make my ship(s) out.
- Trait Details
When creating a character, there doesn't appear to be anywhere informing said player of species-specific traits. It's only after you've created a character that this is shown (within the relevant menu).
- Up/Down Starship Joystick
Would be nice if we could change this so that if we move our analogue sticks up, our ships also go up, rather than down (and vice versa; down is down). I know the current method is default on the PC, but it is also changeable on the PC. Would be a welcomed console addition.
- There's an option (in the PC tailor) to turn off the showing of items not purchased. I'd like this back please. Saves endless scrolling for me. Same applies to ships. We don't all need to see everything we don't own. At least give us the option to view it or not.
Other:
- Lack of Duty Officer System
- Lack of existing anniversary unlocks
All those limited time events that PC players got, how are console players ever suppose to get them? Worf's hair? Risian Escorts? Phoenix Pet?
And yeah, that's all I've got at the moment, but I'd say
well played, despite concerns.
Comments
The Lack of the Duty Officer System is supposed to be only temporarily. Cryptic couldn't get all the systems we take for granted on time so left a bunch of the optional systems like Crafting, Admiralty, Duty Officers, and Fleet Holdings until after it was launched.
Anniversary Unlocks are not just a problem for Console users. Unless you have been playing since the game went F2P, there is always some limited time reward that has been missed. We will have to wait for the Winter Event to see how Cryptic deals with this problem.
Thanks
Graphics-wise...still a work in progress and hope it might better but as of now it does not compare to my other console gaming I own.
I'm pretty sure that graphics on the PS4 or Xbox one isn't a priority for Cryptic. Getting the rest of the systems up for the console version is the top priority.
Lifetime Sub since June 2010
To requisition a new one (once you've got one), you'll need to go into your menu (press/hold down the touchpad on your controller), it's in the top menu somewhere IIRC. You will of course need to make sure you have an open boff slot, else you wont be able to commission a new one. Your early levels grant you four boff slots, alongside four boffs, so they're automatically filled. I do believe (if the console game is like the pc game) that your boff slots will increase with your rank.
Again, on the menu screen, select bridge officers, then go into their bio area (use the d-pad) and select edit.
Same menu area as above, you'll have to scroll/dab along (I think it's R2) and you'll see a dismiss option in the bottom right.
Whilst the graphics for STO: Consoles leaves a little to be desired (by the standards of some other games) I don't see a graphic overhaul taking place for this game, seeing that it's built around the pc version, and that'll likely take precedence. If they change the console graphics (too much) they'll have to compensate for pc graphics, and unless I'm mistaken, one of the reasons it's as it is on pc is to cater for people that might not have the most powerful computers. If they suddenly slap a graphics update and alienate players, that'll hit Cryptic's wallet.
These two are my biggest issues. Not game-breaking, just really annoying. Otherwise, the console version is actually better than I expected.

Neverwinter has the same thing with lockboxes and there's no way to turn it off sadly.

Cameras: No way to zoom in or out on either your captain or ship. Some ships I will never play until there is a viable change to this because the ships are too big to see anything else. I.E. the Dyson Carrier you fly in one of the missions.
More help learning controls: As it stands, with the amount of trouble I, a veteran player, had figuring things out...I really feel for a new player and have little faith that this game, as is, will retain their interests. It needs to be more friendly to the uninitiated. I.E. "joining" A queue....the timer appears, and most players think "That's it, I'm in"...and they never hold "A" (xbone) and choose join queue.
Poor UI design: I understand the difficulty in porting the game to the console, I understand this likely was a larger hurdle to overcome. However, whomever thought having the "A" button (xbone) be a jump button and should share the captains command window....made a huge mistake. For instance, there is one mission where you have a window open the entire time giving you the option to "Exit caves: Press A" the entire mission...which negates any ability to jump. Not good.
Graphics: Never seen this much on the PC....but npcs speed walk everywhere. Every cut scene has NPC's speed walking through the scene. Maybe it's my latency...but...it sucks to watch.
Missing content: Rather than rushing to get this out by the 50th anniversary missing half the game...you really should have released it as it is on the pc. I mean...there are missions that have duty officer missions related to it....DS9 Borg conference...Fleets are useless as is...
When you read the producers letter...then see what is on the console...you wonder exactly how much romulan ale was drunk while writing it. The game is a far cry from what I experienced on PC.
Queue go back to PC in......3.......2...........
This is a big gripe for me. They should have used R3 or L3; one of those is currently redundant I do believe.
I agree about Fleets; they shouldn't have even bothered with them until they were actually ready to roll them out. I presume any mission-associated Doffs players will get as a doff reward pack if/when doffs are released. I'll be pretty annoyed if I have to go and replay a bunch of missions to get unique doffs.
I want to be able to see my boat, in combat, in sector space, at spacedock, at a zoom level of my choosing, on the fly.

For example, I like keeping my camera on the 'second' zoom level (second closest). I set it there constantly, but every time I get into combat, change zones/maps, or even just move around too much, my camera zooms further out for no reason.
I want an option to LOCK the frakking camera where I set it, period.
I asked them if they could credit my PS4 with my life subscription and they said no because it is a different game with different characters... I fail to see how that is the case...
It's a Lifetime Subscription for STO... And this is STO and it still has Lifetime Subscription on offer.... Only different characters would be the actual human players..
I just put it down to Cryptic / Perfect World being greedy and wanting to charge Lifetime Sub members twice for something they have already purchased. Pretty disgusting behaviour IMHO.
I'm a PC Lifetime Subscription Member since way back when they where first offered in Beta testing.
Recognition of Lifetime Subscriptions is not going to negatively affect anything but Cryptic / Perfect World's Bank balance.
Gane wise... Issues are pretty much limited to the camera distances issue many other people have mentioned.
