After playing Star Trek Online on PC for a few years now, I figured I would try out the console version for the PS4. Right from the start, there is no account linking. Everything I earned on the PC version I have to earn all over again. Okay, fine.....They wanted to make everything fair for everyone, right? No. It's because the consoles won't get the updates as fast as PC does. So I played as a Romulan, since the Rommies are my favorite species in Star Trek. As I try to get adjusted to the controls, I want to make my target reticle move faster, so I check the options and crank that slider all the way. As I leave the options, the camera is now further away. I thought I messed up, so I go back and try and fix it. But nope. To make the reticle move faster, the camera zooms out. Bummer. That's a negative. I go ahead and grab my pistol from the locker and try shooting the vases. It seems the devs tried a hybrid of tab targeting with shooter mode. VERY FRUSTRATING. I continue to power through it. hoping it's just me getting used to the controller scheme. So I finally get to space combat.....something for me that'll either make or break this port. No way to zoom in or out. No option to adjust the power levels to MY favorite settings. (MAJOR NEGATIVE POINTS) The "power wheels" are just to convoluted to even use. I tried to use the cloaking for my T'Liss before I started a battle, but guess what? NOTHING HAPPENED. (Another negative) It also seems that the ships turn slower than Voth Citadel ships do on PC. I finally get to the republic fleet and guess what, I can't even change around what abilities I want into the spots I want. There is absolutely ZERO customization.

I will try again and see if I can even get to like this port. But so far, if your wanting to play STO, just save yourself the hassle and just play it on PC. There is so much more that opens up on PC that you can NOT do on consoles.

Now there are some positives, at least the players from the console version will convert to the PC version when they tire of STO lite.

The account linking doesn't transfer anything over to console because the console release is not target towards PC players. For the last 20 or so years of gaming, if you move from one platform to the other such as from Xbox to Playstation, you've never been able to transfer data from platform to platform in 99% of the games out there. Sure it sucks, but considering that's been the norm for around 20 years, why would you expect it to be different now.

The console release was not meant for PC players who are already established, but was meant to bring new players into the game that either couldn't or wouldn't play the game otherwise. Quite simply PC players are not the target audience for this. As to why some stuff isn't implemented yet, it's in part to test the server load allowing them to address issues and implement things in phases. Also it has the added benefit of not bombarding and overwhelming folks with so much stuff at once. By the very nature console isn't going to be able to do every single thing that a PC can. With a PC you have a full keyboard, mouse, and alot more powerful hardware to work with typically than a console has. With a console you typically only have a controller and that's it, so things have to be kept simple. I really don't understand why so many people the past little while on the forums here seem to be shocked by that. Not saying that to be insulting but purely from a technical standpoint.

The core of the game is the same between PC and console but otherwise is a completely different game in most aspects.

@jodarkrider me thinks this thread is going to start getting out of hand quickly

I started playing last night on PS4. I had played the first season on PC when I bought it at launch to get my Borg Bridge Officer. Glad it's free to play now. Here's what I've found to be negatives and positives for the PS4 version.

    Negatives:
    - No bridge crew customization? I loved building my own bridge crew. I was so excited for this feature when the game first released that I wrote out an entire back story for each member before the game launched and decided their race/gender/etc. I loved that part of the game. Now bridge crew are just assigned and I don't even have enough "funds" to rename them.

    - No zoom in/out while in space or on an away mission. My ship is so small in sub space that I can barely see it on my 32" HDTV. My character is also small when running around on the star base or even on the planets.

    - Slow movement of "mouse". Not sure if I can speed it up.

    - No transfer of progress from the PC version after linking my account. Also lost my Borg Bridge Officer *sad face*

    Positives:
    - The beginning mission where you become captain seems more fleshed out than I remember it being on the PC.

    - While I can't customize my bridge crew as they are now assigned to me automatically from story characters, it does add to the flow of the story a little better.

    - Graphical update is noticeable.

    - The sub space bottom grid is gone making it feel like I'm actually flying through space; pretty cool.

    - Keyboard to Controller transfer was pretty well done for the most part.

    - Captain and Ship customization appear to be intact which is great.

I'm going to try and get my buddies to jump on board with this game on PS4 so we can coop through the universe. Going from Uncharted 4 graphics/animations to STO's MMO graphics/animations can be a bit jarring but the fun aspect of the game is still intact which is more important. I also found the story to keep me hooked for 40 minutes longer than I was anticipating playing for last night which made me really tired for work this morning.

I haven't played since they stopped the Mac port. I didn't realize they changed that in the PC version.

One thing I don't like is space powers. If you have more than one tactical ability you have to hold circle and it brings up a wheel of available powers

You can toggle between various zoom levels. Hold down X to bring up the Quick Menu, move the cursor down to Set Camera and hit X to toggle between the zoom levels.

That's been a known thing since the game was announced back in what was it, May?

    Positives:

Yep, we must have both played the original tutorial. The one the console has is actually the one from the current PC version, but unless you start a new character (and choose to go through it) you won't see it.

My opinion is completely opposite of the OP.

I tried the PC version out a few years ago on my laptop, but quit after a while because it did not run well on my laptop and I hated the keyboard / mouse controls.

I am LOVING the PS4 version, the controller works great and I personally find it very easy to use. It looks much nicer as well.

Once you have locked onto a target moving the right stick cycles through the targets, but yes that part is a little wonky sometimes. If you want to change camera angles after locking a target you have to release the left trigger, adjust, then reacquire the target. If I understood your statement correctly. Hope that helps.

I agree with a lot that has been said here, however let us not forget that this is "NEW" and there are always bugs. As far as linking/transferring toons now that so sux. I worked hard for what I earned and can't take it with me lol Oh well, no biggie. Maybe I'll get it right or better this time around. LMAO! Still it is an awesome game and I will enjoy playing it on the PS4.

It definitely has some bugs but that was too be somewhat expected. At the time this game came out I didn't have a PC capable of running it and as time went on I just never got around to getting into it. Now that it is on PS4 I am really enjoying my time with it and I don't have that many issues with the controls except for the irritating lock on changing being so dang sensitive. Also they need to stop letting us lock on to allies. Besides that I don't have an issue having multiple powers queued up and activating on their own and especially with the Assault Cruiser I just got for hitting 40 I am definitely seeing the improvement of having so many activate as needed. I will eventually get around to running multiple characters and I am looking forward to the additions we will be getting that are already on the PC version. I hope that the console versions keep the developers engaged and that all platforms will continue to see new content for a long time to come.

Well, I have just started playing on XBox, And whilst currently the game is reasonably popular (new game honeymoon), its already only attracting the established Star Trek Fans, the rest of the console crowd here on XBox have other space MMO's/RPG's that frankly knock this into a cocked hat, such as Warframe and Elite: Dangerous.

I already know of a few people who have played to level 15/20 and have then said the controls are too convoluted, Sector Space travel just takes WAY too long (personally I love just roaming around in Sector Space, I do the Daily which involves getting to as many systems as you can in 15 minutes), and walked away.

Also, loads of people are incensed about this following the Neverwinter model (which isn't very popular now on XBox, it has a few thousand players at most), and hiding the best stuff and coolest ships and skins behind the Zen wall.

I predict that the Xbox version is going to end up in a very niche corner, attracting only the most hardcore trekkies.

PvP/PvE queues are non-existent as well. I accepted the PvP tutorials, sat in a queue for an hour, and noticed that not a single person had joined in that time. I guess though that this is because only a handful have reached max level, and found that apart from those queues, there is little or nothing to do, and either started a new char, or have quit out.

You can totally customize your bridge crew. Renaming is done through the Bridge Officers screen, which it sounds like you've found, while cosmetic changes to appearance and uniform are all done through the tailors. I went into the Tailor shop at Earth Spacedock and went to adjust the crew's uniforms (X on Xbox, I believe, maybe Square on PS4?) and the adjustments were just available.

I too miss my Borg bridge officer and wish they'd let me transfer my LTS to console.

My main problem with the console version of this game is the fixed camera zoom levels. I really like having full control over how much or little you can zoom in PC version. I have a good friend who plays the console version because he could never afford a decent PC to play it on. I'm not concerned about no account transfer, my console toon can be used for playing with my friend, while not abandoning my PC toons that I've put literally years of work into.

Console version is going to be one hell of a grind, I swear everyone Bought credits with real money on 3rd party sites, since it not a thing on console, setting up your ship to be exactly what you want is going to be one hell of an "omg it's been 2 years in the making" to build. And I'm still upset that I can't reverse the Y-axis, such small feature to put in the game, makes all the difference. Xbox needs its own forums for these rants, so the devs can fix these things.

I'm currently level 24, and so far ground combat is literally the worst part of the game, flying is slow, but I think people aren't realizing that they don't have their character maxed out or have the right consoles on, in one of those tholian mission, the one were you fly the ambassador cruiser, that moved more familiar to how pc feels.

Honestly idk how I feel about it the game on console yet, after playing pc for 6 years gonna take some time adjusting, I get that.

Ummm, the controls imo seem to leave you picking which circumstances you want your skills to auto activate, the new system take some getting used and many times in pvp I get locked out in a turn becaused I pulled a tab up mid turn, and that bit of being locked in a turn to activate a skill through my trajectory off. End game with 30+ skills on this systems, I think the average player will have half of the skills under some sort of auto trigger.

Anyway, seeing on how pvp is a joke it won't matter in that regard & makes PVE hilariously easy. Looking forward to see how I'll handle it after 3mths of playing, there's just a bit of learning curve to space and ground skill activation imo
