Hahaha, the best part is that it's so obvious to anyone that actually knows STO.

Yeah, really. What he's talking about doesn't match the pictures at ALL!!!

He's talking about manning consoles on a bridge... Ok kinda works when you're showing pictures of an Oddy shooting up a Tac Cube.... not so much when cataloguing wildlife on Mol'Rihan though.... or visiting one of several other ground maps unique to STO....

To be fair, they didn't actually say that the footage was from ST:BC, and at least they put the STO acknowledgement at the end.

It's not unusual for productions like this to substitute footage from a similar production when footage for what they're reporting on isn't available. Considering that this is a VR-only game, the footage from the reviewer's session was probably unsiutable, considering how poorly VR tends to translate to 2D video.

This sort of substitution happens quite a lot, actually, it's just that the majority of the viewing public doesn't bother questioning where some of the visuals come from to begin with, for instance when an upcoming concert or awards show (that hasn't been recorded yet) is being advertised.

Using footage from last year's Night of Joy concert to promote this year's Night of Joy concert is totally understandable.... But this is like using Night of Joy footage to promote some indie band that we've never heard of...

So, where do you propose that they get stock footage for this video (@markhawkman)? And no, this doesn't count as a copyright issue, since it falls under fair use.

You mean the trailer that consists primarily of Burton, Ryan, Urban, et al, talking about the game? It's not very video-gamey. It does have a few seconds of "gameplay" footage, albeit tailor-made clips designed to fit a 2D format, and definitely not nearly enough to flesh out the length of the review. And a quick google for more video reveals that that's all there is..

To be fair, anyone watching this and has no clue what Star Trek Online or ST:BC looks like might actually take that footage at face value. Theres a reason that in the gaming community theres been a lot of backlash towards companies like Ubisoft who present video of "in-game gameplay" at events like E3 only for it to be severely different upon release. People tune into these reviews and events to get an idea of what theyre going to buy. If someones talking about one video game or product while showing another. People are going to assume what they see is the product that is being talked about.

I would suppose that's why they included the big "Star Trek Online" splash screen at the end, to allay anyone's expectations that this was actually footage of ST:BC.

Yeah, This sums up why I think this usage is dishonest. It's like that Elite Dangerous trailer...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwoXcpqp3Ew
It makes the game look like something it is not.....
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=romB8e5nMp8
I get that this footage was a bit short, but... if they were gonna borrow from STO to pad the footage, they should have stuck to things that looked like they MIGHT fit in that game, rather than Stuff like Mol'Rihan and Kobali that obviously are not.

Also the full e3 trailer was 3+ min, the Sky clip show was 1:15-ish.... little padding would have been needed.

I play Elite: Dangerous, and I can truthfully say that the editor of that video really cherry-picked his footage out of a bucket of salt. All he showed was a simple transfer between stations, he left out... well, pretty much everything else. In a Hauler, the minivan of ED. Except PowerPlay. That's a part of the game that's not terribly exciting. True, the trailer he took the promotional footage from isn't of actual gameplay (you couldn't play the game with camera angles like that), but the game can actually render that well, given a powerful enough rig.

Y'know, if you guys think that this is all such a horrific travesty, why not contact SkyNews and give them a piece of your mind, instead of going on about their misleading dishonesty in a forum that they'll never see. You can drop them a line at news@sky.com, or newsonline@sky.uk

And now, if you don't mind, I have to decide if I want to go get into a furball with pirate wings in a HazRes, or find some obscure moon and go ATVing in an SRV...

Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

Well, I've been assuming it was a synonym for Plonk. As in the sound that comes shortly before a flush. Oft used on Usenet & some online forums to indicate someone just went on ignore.
