I'm interested in switching from pc to console (ps4) but I'm curious about how the controls work. On pc in space mode, my screen has 3-4 ability trays with 10 abilities each. That seems impossible to fit onto a console controller no matter what secondary buttons you use. Can anyone explain how they work?

If you haven't already seen the numerous posts, just a heads up. Nothing from the PC will transfer to the console, absolutely nothing.
I'm aware. My father in law and my brother both have consoles but do not have PC's. I've already been out of STO for more than a year, so at this point I'm practically starting over anyways - I have to relearn how to play the game and catch up to all of the others that have had all that time to continue grinding without me, plus most of my old fleet is gone and I dont have any friends online that play STO on pc anymore.
If I switch to console, yea, I lose all of my cstore purchases and subscription bonuses, and yea I have to start from square 1 with nothing to my name, but I'll be able to play with friends and on a relatively even playing field to all the other players starting on console. The economy wont be jacked up, not everyone will have top-of-the-line stuff yet, and there will be more people to team with.
It shouldnt work, but it does, auto activate doesnt work perfectly, it seems to be a little buggy, but on the whole, its what makes the whole thing work. Its going to be a huge slog to get back where i am on pc, but its actually refreshing to have to think outside the box when it comes to builds as half of the consoles dont exist in game atm. The exchange is weird too, very little EC in game atm so things are either missing or random prices, but its actually really good imho. Breath of fresh air..
Once crafting comes in it'll be much much better, but on the whole, by far the best MMO launch ive ever seen and it works just as well as ESO does on console imho.
I really wish I could change which buttons were for which abilities though. I hate having circle as my tactical button, square feels more natural for offense. The triangle/circle in most games are secondary actions or abilities since they're more awkward to reach.
I also agree that a left trigger + x/circle/square/triangle setup would've been much more natural and useful for having a larger ability selection.
Dont know if PS4 has the option, but on xbox you can remap all buttons from the xbox homescreen (even more useful if you have the elite controller like i do)
