Need help with captain skills!

inseditnexinseditnex Member Posts: 8 Arc User
Hello I am returning to this after a very long time away. As it came out on console it is more accessible to me now. My question is that I am playing a Science officer and I am confused by the new skill tree. I don't know what to spend points on. Should I take anything from the Tactical and Engineering trees or just the science skills.. Same confusion for ground and space skill trees...

Thanks for your help. Also could you tell me this. I see my away team members have multiple skills they can use but when on ground mission I can only control my captain so do the away team use there skills automatically or is there. Way to control them or assign them to use certain skills..

Away team members use their skills as they see fit, which usually means whenever they can. You can block abilities by right-clicking them or tell tell them to use one with a left-click. At least that's how it works on PC, no idea about consoles.

You can also set up waypoints for the whole team or for individual members, there are tiny symbols where the bridge officers are shown.

Ok thanks. Also can bridge officers use kit? I don't see they have the kit slot in their inventories.. I have acquired a few kits that are not for my class..

No, kits are only for your character. Boffs can be trained to specific abilities allowed for their class. You need to purchase training manuals to do so. There are officers in ESD (underneath Admiral Quinn's Office), First City (in the building behind Worf), and New Romulus Command (in an operations room across from the Admiral... can't remember his name...). I think the training manuals ranges between 250 EC to 10k EC depending on the rank the ability is available. However, the training offers do not sell of the available training manuals. Some are from lock boxes while other abilities can be crafted by your captain once a specific amount of skill points have been allocated to a class skill tree.

Since crafting has not been implemented yet, you cannot craft training manuals until they do. Lock box and crafted training manuals can be purchased from the Exchange if someone lists them there. Additionally, you get free Boffs as you level up which you can have them join your crew, put them on the Exchange for sale, or put them in your Boff candidate list; I believe you can up to 12 candidates in your list before they occupy on of your personal inventory slot. If a candidate has an ability that you like, but you don't necessarily want to use that Boff, then you should have an option to create a training manual for that ability. This will remove that Boff from your list, and place a training manual in your inventory.

Before a Boff can be trained, you need to promote the Boff to the level of that ability. For example, Tricoder Scan III is a Commander science rank ability, therefore your science Boff must be promoted to Commander before he / she can learn that ability (which destroys the training manual).

There are only a few things that are so specialized that they could be a "wrong" choice. For example choosing torpedo related skills if you're not using torpedoes.

Everyone has the same skill tree, so the class of your captain has nothing to do with the skills. I usually chose at least one point in everything, leaving out skills that are of no use for my set-up, any points remaining are spent on universally helpful skills, like boosting systems or increasing weapon skills for weapons I use (most of the times that's energy weapons).

You get a total of 10 ground points and 45 space points, so no, you can't max everything. That would kinda defeat the purpose of choosing. But there are more than enough points to get all the essentials and some special stuff. Don't worry too much about it. :)

Thanks for the info. Another question. I'm lvl 20 now and can buy another shop. Should I stick to Science vessels as that is my class or buy a different type of ship? Does it matter?

Bridge officers can't use kits, sell those you can't use yourself to a vendor or throw them into your replicator.

Classes and ship types have nothing to do with one another, fly whatever ship you want to fly. You will find that escorts allow you to get through space combat faster for leveling, at least that's nice when you level more characters and repeat content.
