point is it aint dead n gone and in fact has enough popularity to maintain player driven economies
Point is, the people that made the game are not making money of it anymore. It's failed, for all intents of purposes of a business.
If you believe someone will liberate the Star Trek Online code when the servers are down, and CBS would allow a copy-cat to stay online, I think you will be disappointed.
actually it didn't fail, it was still going well and making profits but was shut down so it didnt compete with the fiscal disaster swtor was turning into
it is, but it took forever to make back its monstrous development costs, and the developers are still very sorry they didnt use their own engine
Not to mention that quite a few people have quit the game in protest of the direction it's going with Knights of the Fallen Empire. Basically saying "if I wanted a single-player Old Republic game, I'd play the two KotOR ones". Plus the fact that it's gone damn near faction-neutral by that point; it's almost to the point where having separate factions outside of PvP is pointless. (Sounds almost familiar, come to think of it, and we don't really even have PvP to fall back on here.)

Aye, I found the backstory of it to be a bit fuzzy, as well as it being railroaded. How many people have left exactly, or at least your best educated guess?
server Im on still has a plenty healthy population at all hours of the day, I think the "people quit en masse" theory is kinda like the ones here, lots of bluster no quitting.

That would be my guess, too.
But SWTOR is the best example for a game that has a franchise where the two factions were equally strong presented over the movies, and yet they still boiled it down to single faction content.
And they didn't even manage the integration of space and ground combat.
But they got a cool story and voice overs from the start. Still didn't "save" them from F2P, or from the faction-neutral expansion.

There are several factors that contributed to that... Chief is their desire to be WoW with Star Wars skins. The game mechanics are nearly identical, and thus, just as stale and tired. Next we have their "space" which was little more than an odd Star Fox wannabe that felt like a minigame to distract you from the tedious grind.(which in essence is exactly what it is) They finally head in the right direction with the "Starfighter" expansion then promptly abandonware it, leaving it a novelty PvPeen arena. Strongholds was a fabulous cash cow, and done well, the space barbie crowd pissed out buckets on it. But again, EAware has almost completely abandoned development on it, aside from the odd new decoration. The new KotFE could/would have done a TON better but their promise of "class flavor" is almost non-existant, leaving it very boring for alts which is one of the areas SWTOR used to be strong in. Even the difference between Republic and Empire is lost in KotFE, and that is where they mucked that up. It's a fantastic story, but its almost the exact same story 8 times, where previously, SWTOR delivered 8 different stories.
Having played SWTOR almost as long and as much as STO, I've often wished we could take the best of both for a new MMORPG that would be epic, but both also have one single failing in common that shines above all the other similarities/differences. That difference is one HUGE case of 'oooo shiney' level of A.D.D. Spend months/year building this really cool thing... then drop it and never revisit it for the next 'ooo shiney' idea then the next and the next and the next.

Fear not, even the most brilliant designers have limited ideas. STO is about 80% there, SWTOR is about 75% there. However vast these Universes may be, they are still finite. Once all is exhausted, there will have to be a review of all released content. When this happen, the grinding days will look (and feel) much better.
TOR has an event on at the moment so now would be best if you wanted to go back mustrumridcully0
as for TOR ive given up making any more characters that are kdf or rommie its a viscous cycle they dont make content we dont play it they say its not popular.

Arent romulans(at least some part) merged with vulcans on the 25th century????
Theres a scene of Picard talking with Worf about romulans joining their acestors and what happens if some stay on Kling side.
(and if i reccall Piccard comments that some romulans are already working for the fed).

Nah... I still have to finish my AOY Toons Agent stuff, and fly the T6 Connie. And make EC for the T6 T'LIss or D7 or even both.

Yeah, there is potential for a vicious cycle at work, too, but if so, it starts with the franchise itself. There wasn't a Klingon TV series, a Fed Series and a Romulan series. There were several series that all focused on Starfleet Ships, with Starfleet Crews, and at best a few token non-Federation characters. The Klingons for example might be the single faction with the greatest individual faction fanbase, but if you're part of that fanbase, you're still part of the bigger Star Trek fanbase (no KDF or ROM fans could have enjoyed Star Trek if they hated everything but the Klingons or ROMs). Ever player will find inspiration in the existing casts and ships for his own character, and there is more "FED"/"Human"/Starfleet" sources of inspiration than any other.
And I think it's completely in the spirit of Star Trek that at some point, all the species will be united in the Federation. The walls can be broken down, that hatred can be quelled, and we can live together in peace. And that doesn't have to mean that all cultural identity is lost and destroyed. The Vulcans are the most familiar example we have to offer here - No one expects the Vulcans to give up their logic, nor does anyone expect the other species to give up their emotions.

on the off chance you aren't just troll baiting... its more likely to do with normal cryptic laziness and the in game plot where Klinks and Roms all join the big happy Feddiebear faction in the future. The frikkin RR is already Fed-lite.
The RR isn't anything right now, not when people can freely associate themselves with the Fed or KDF, and the leadership doesn't seem to have any real agenda other than "reunite with the Vulcans, some day, somehow". We need to start holding elections to decide our agenda.
And we don't know that ALL Romulans joined the hugfest in the future, right? There could still be some separatists somewhere, or some might have gone over to other factions.

sure.... ignore the fact that the game repeatedly states there's a senate just because you haven't gotten to vote on something.... similarly its entirely possible.... just like there are Gorn Separatists.... and are laughably out gunned with no real military, or political power.
...Yes, and as with any representative government, senators have platforms and agendas and you vote for the ones that represent your interests. It's not a republic if there are no elections.

And please name one mmo, that isn't an economics simulator, in which players EVER get involved with that? Or vote on anything regarding their faction's policy?
I'm not sure what you mean by "economics simulator", I guess to exclude Eve Online? Since they have an entire tournament for choosing the next leader of the Amarr Empire that players compete in. And Elite has a similar system with multiple political factions competing via player participation that affects the long-term storyline.
Neither are exactly traditional democratic processes, but doing something as simple as holding a vote to elect parties is easy compared to those systems.
point is, they dont do it, except for a pair of games that focus on PvPeen. There's no point to trying to include it, its a waste of developer time and effort to include it. And really, there is no benefit to it for STO. We're told how the plot goes, we get 0 say in it, never have, never will. If we're lucky they add a Jolan'tru or Qa'pla to the mission text if you're not fed.

swtor is profitable? lol

Maybe STO will stop releasing new stuff one day, after all. (By some estimations, it should have stopped doing so years ago. )
