There's some ships I wouldn't mind having, but I have plenty already.
Best dil I ever spent was on C-Store Eclipse. But I quit spending real money when 2 things happened. First, they discontinued my fleet escort & reintroduced it with a tailgun - had to re-buy it. Second, they changed the T5 trait stuff on the reputations after grind/grind/grind. I put about $200 into the game before all that. Not that I won't ever again, but having been twice burned I am thrice shy. I would still consider going lifetime if there was a good enough sale, but that's about it. These days, I buy keys with EC & save lobi.
I agree they have to make money, or why be in business? Seems very clear to anyone with sense.
Just as clear, however are those occasions when it is very obvious they are gouging the fanbase.
Not cool.
Put it on sale for $50 for the 50th, and you'll make a lot of folks happy. Though I suppose there will be those complaining that they already spent twice that much & should get it for free.
....And here I thought people were not going to be spending anymore money on STO after the whole Gold D'Kora incident.
Don't I feel sheepish.
A large portion of STO's fanbase are masochistic. They say they will never do a certain thing, then turn around and do it despite trying to convince themselves otherwise.

What was the "whole Gold D'Kora incident"?
Cryptic apparently staged a customer appreciation reward for certain high-volume customers, it became publicly known, and some people who thought they ought to have qualified for it -- despite the fact that we don't know what the qualifier was -- didn't get it. *Some* people may have (temporarily?) lost out because ARC wasn't set up to notify the email addresses. The most valuable reward in the pack was a T6 D'Kora with a gold-plated skin.
That was nothing compared to the "outrage" of putting what passes as a T6 Constitution in a random-chance promo box instead of putting it in the C-Store. heh. Disappointing but predictable.
Me, I console myself with the fact that C-Store ships have far more value and that I have more than enough of those to keep me busy. I haven't overspent on STO, so I'm not experiencing any remorse. Some other people have and are.
Not very long ago there were a select group of people that received a special T6 ship; the Gold D'Kora Marauder. It was a thank you either from PWE or Cryptic to individuals that have given STO "unwavering support" over the years. PWE is Perfect World Entertainment and it is the parent company of Cryptic. Some speculate the "prize" was Cryptic's idea to reward that small core group of players. Others think it was PWE that told Cryptic to give these players something "special".
Anywaste, no one knows how these players qualified for the prize since releasing the such information and the names of the individuals can be considered a breach of personal privacy. For example, if one of the qualification to have at least purchase $2,000 worth of Zen using real money, then when you see someone flying around in a D'Kora (I've seen it twice; two different players), then the first thing that comes into mind is, "Hey this guy spent at least $2,000 of real money on the game". How much money a player spends on a MMO is really no one's business. Except perhaps the player's spouse.
It's also possible that of all the players who qualified to receive the D'Kora, were placed into a secret lottery. For example, maybe the goal was to only give out 50 of these ships. I have seen some disgruntled posts about people stating they have been playing STO since beta, purchased a LTS and dumped "loads of money" into the game, yet they got "shafted".
Then you got lucky and you know it. If you have played the game long enough and have tried buying boxes to get a ship beforehand, you also know that it's pretty random and it can sometimes cost a lot of boxes to get what your looking for.
Although I agree with others about possibly buying the ship from someone can be an easier way, I think 128 bucks (Or whatever the number was) is a lot to pay for a single ship.
I'd say wait it out for a while. Once you start seeing more people with said ship the prices go down, way down. If you can hold off a while you maybe able to get it for a huge savings. I also understand that it's awesome to have the newest coolest ship. You just need to decide. Pay a ton for it, open a ton of boxes and maybe get lucky or wait till the price drops when the next new awesome ship comes out.
Also be sure to check about once every 2 weeks for free giveaways. There's a chance you could get a ship via an online contest somewhere.
wouldn't it be cheaper to just open lockboxes and sell costumes and other stuff you get out of it ?
Two problems:
The T6 Connie is an R&D pack ship not a lock box ship. Even if you open 1 million lock boxes you will never get a prime timeline Connie.
For other ships or to make EC, that works out *IF* you open hundreds or possibly thousands of boxes. People with bad luck can open 300 lock boxes and never get a ship. It's only over very large numbers of boxes that the averages *usually* work out but there is still more risk than if you just sell boxes for EC, use EC to buy a ship.

The Grand Nagus said no.
