Unfortunately, support for Mac OS has been discontinued.
I believe Apple made some significant changes to the Mac OS which made it incompatible with a "wrapper" that was previously developed by a 3rd party software company that allowed STO to be played on a Mac.
The "wrapper" was basically a emulator that allowed the Windows instructions to be converted into instructions the Mac OS could execute. Unfortunately. the updates to the Mac OS broke the "wrapper". Therefore, Cryptic would need to contract software company to update / re-design the "wrapper". The problem is that is going to cost a lot of money and one of Cryptic developers did mention that Mac users makes up less than 1% of the player base. On top of that the "wrapper" was not a perfect solution and Cryptic was not truly happy with the results.
The only suggestion I can make is to use an emulator like WINE to run the game. For "true compatibility" you can use Bootcamp to install Windows. But that means you need to buy a Windows license and you need to partition the laptop's hard drive / SSD to install Windows and STO. Mac OS and Windows uses different File Systems (a way to store data) that are not compatible with each other.
The only other solution is to wait for the PS4 / Xbox One version of STO when it comes out sometime in Fall 2016... assuming you have one of those consoles...
I'm a mac user and I don't see STO listed on the supported software list. Just star wars, star twine, starcraft. Also, after installing playonmac, I couldn't even open it because it said couldn't run due to fact of being downloaded online instead of from the app store. I loved STO and now I can't even play it. Waiting for xbox one release(or a working windows system)
Crossover I find 'ok' on my 2009 iMac (I know, but can't afford a newer one) Make sure you get version 15.1 (the current one)
Stream from a windows PC using Steam (works really well as long as your regular PC can play STO well, then it should stream fine)
Bootcamp whichever windows version you have support for and run it in Windows on your mac.
You may find your MBA struggles with STO, and you may find streaming from a PC your best option there (if you can)
