I've learned not to trust the doom and gloom I hear about "Star Trek Online is dying". It's not true, the game's fine. :)

This is, possibly with the exception of Bridge Commander, the best Star Trek Game I have ever played. I only stumbled on it last year while looking for a Battlestar Galactica game.

Cryptic might want to do a bit more advertising and catch the eye of the reviewers. Many of the reviews I have seen date back to 2012/13 and are pretty hostile.

If there's one thing cryptic is absolutely terrible at, it's advertising.

"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."

Yeah, I never heard of STO prior to January 2014. Then again, I was not actively looking for an online Star Trek game. The last Star Trek game I played was Starfleet Command II: Empires At War back in 2002.

I only stumbled across STO when I was watching some Youtube videos there the individual cast members of TNG / DS9 were being interviewed. A STO game play video queued up. I decided to give the game a try since it reminded me of SFC II.

That's going back a bit. I too played the SFC games. They were based upon Star Fleet Battles, a board game.

    Game Still Alive?

The easy way to judge is to go to any of the Home systems. You will find that there are still plenty of players out there. ESD is always a traffic jam.

Especially now that they released even more GIGANTIC Romulan ships. T6 Kara(Ha'apax) and T6 Scimitars.

Has the game died? No. Is it dying? Maybe - some Queues take much longer to start than some time ago, others won't start (esp if you are into PvP). I used to do fun stuff together with a Team - 3 of the 5 Players aren't active anymore. Fleet Projects take much longer now. So Player wise I think the game has lost many faithfuls.
Eventwise and shipwise this game is alive and kicking - one Event after the other (even if last one was terrible) and ships (=that'S what Players want and what brings Money).
Content wise the game has slowed down since New Romulus was founded.

game experience - most Players I talk to log on, do daylies and one or 2 missions and log off again. The "hours of teaming up and having fun" seem to be a Thing of the past.

I guess the game Needs something to get a big Player base back again - like playable Cardassians.

Also I am not sure if new PvEs should have priority over Fixing classics (like Defera) - obviously with new Reputation branch this seems neccesary. But I think not getting another Reputation for one or two updates wouldn't hurt if they improved the way the game responded - it's far too sluggish now.

by writing about the game at such a lenght you see that the Passion is still there - even if I Play much less and spend even lesser cash These days :disappointed:
    18 characters
    KDF: 2 tacs, 2 engs, 3 scis
KDF Roms: 3 tacs, 1 eng, 1 scis
    FED: 2 tacs, 1 eng, 2 scis
    TOS: 1 tac
all on T5 rep (up to temporal)
all have mastered Intel tree (and some more specs Points)
    highest DPS: 60.982

Over the last few months, every time I pop into Sol and ESD, I've been seeing more and more Miranda's. Might be old players creating new characters, or it might be new players out for their first run at STO. :: shrugs ::

Unlikely to be old players, I remember being here when they all got mad they were being given a free char slot to do exactly that.
  • trillbuffettrillbuffet Member Posts: 861 Arc User
Yeah the old guard do stuff like the new mission when they come out but like myself I rarely do it more than once even tho it has those rewards i just have too much TRIBBLE that new stuff I usually just throw it away because there is not much room to hold it unless i buy more bank space.

As far as old players and ways we communicated all those channels are dead its sort of on both ends development side and new player base the divide between factions with teaming and then the lack of communication between players because zone chat is for trolls so communication of players wanting to do stuff together is so bad it just feels like the game is dead and maybe spend half an hour on sto before I just log out.

Plus the fact that STO has limited itself to just the pve aspect of mmorpgs it gets old again real quick and once that boing feeling hits you. Then at that point you go play a game that has that wide spectrum of game play so a lot of this is why the old players can't ever really come back its too dull and a re-hash of every season to date with new art but basically same old stuff.

Players complain when they get a free character slot. Players complain when they need to purchase character slots if they want more than 4 characters.

Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

Also, the lead producer, Al "Captain Geko" Rivera, mentioned several weeks ago in a Priority One Podcast that they currently have plans for game content thru 2018.

The game is doing very well, they actually answered this question, albeit, indirectly, with their response to "Steam usage stats proves this game is dying!" in the FCT announcement, in the general discussion section of the forums.

So basically, the Federation is an organization that exists to protect and preserve peace. I guess we do an awful lot of killing though. Oh well, that isn't important, for now let's roll up our sleeves and get to work.

The claim that most casual players left following DR does not match up with any available facts. First, even though Steam numbers represent a very small portion of the overall playerbase, looking at the averages over the course of the last 2 years shows a very stable number of players, varying by only a couple hundred up or down, and in fact following Delta Rising the average is higher. This is entirely consistent with statements made by the game's EP that player numbers for STO have been remarkably steady for several years now.

Actually, that was a typo. I meant to say "many". But that was based on reading a lot of threads about fleets losing fleetmates as I stated in my post.
I left a fleet not long after DR was released, when it became clear that my only value to them was in my contributions to the fleetbank and projects - I could never seem to make enough rep with the Fleet Admiral to get access to anything coming my way. And if I wanted to let all my stuff be sucked away to support someone who didn't appreciate my efforts, I'd have stayed with my first wife.

As for the other popular metric, I haven't touched any queues - I find that generally, there's more than enough for me to do just playing the storyline. (I'm practically the definition of "casual", possibly even "dilettante", and even my main hasn't finished everything. One day I ought to go back and see how well this Krenim ship handles those Borg missions...)

    Dammit! Beat me to it!

    *ahem*
Yes, the game is very much alive, in the sense that there are still players here - many of the "old guard" are still active on the forums, but I don't really pay any attention to that in-game.

A good number of my fleet's original members have left, but quite a bit of that is because of personal circumstances..others found that the game has become stale and repetitive, and that's their opinion. Some didn't exactly agree with the Fleet CoC (which has remained the same since day 1) or the new leadership - our founder left for personal reasons- and left anyway.

But I digress; the game is still alive, and strong as ever.

P.S. I thought this was going to be one of those "DDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM" threads.

    EDIT: Fixed typos.

    Hi guys,

I've played the game on and off a good bit since launch, I'm re-downloading the game again now and want to really get into it again, I just want a general idea of the state of the game at the moment? Hows the population? Any risk of the game being shut down anytime soon?

    Cheers,

Well, I myself came back after taking a break for a few years, enlisting in the army, and other real life stuff. Came back in....late March, and I'm still learning how to play again. Changes to skills, roleplaying group I was in bailed, Admiralty stuff, new reputation groups, and all sorts of other things that have the dome above my shoulders spinning around. But I'm having more fun again, even if the RP group I was in broke apart and quit. Everything feels fresh again, even my Bortasqu' has the new ship smell to it, though part of that is because I bought it just before I enlisted, and never got to fly the beast.

As for population, I'm not sure. I imagine many people have moved onto other things, but I'm enjoying my return. And maybe I'll work on making friends again when I get to a more social point.

    It's dead Jim

No really, there is no one here. <.< >.>

Actually there is a pretty decent population from what I've seen. I don't play queues and generally just run red alerts but during events a lot of people log on so I'd say it's at least maintaining people.

Like all of those playing it, it's dying. There is no chance of survival, no way of getting out of this alive. The game will die and so will we. Now the time frame... that's the tricky part...

Doom as a whole is unavoidable, but Doom also likes to procrastinate. Doom seems like it will be there in 5 minutes, 5 hours later you wonder where Doom is, and it gives every indication of being there in 5 minutes. As the saying goes, never Doom today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Well chalk up a noob here. Like no idea about anything in this game. But I'll be checking it out. 12 gb patch :o But about 1/2 done now. I know about grinds in games. Don't mind them. I'm figuring the learning curve is huge. Like ships and weapons ect.
I'll be learning everything. That's what I like doing in games. This one has caught my interest. Let's see how it pans out. lol
See you in the vastness of space......The final frontier.... I was never big on Star Trek. But does have a rich history made by the people who do love it. I look forward to learning that too. That's all for now.
