So from what I've gathered from google, its really not worth playing a KDF character, but those ships just look really cool. my only worry is that a lot of people say the KDF player base is quiet small. Is this true? Thoughts?
The ships are pretty cool, and offer more aggressive oriented playstyles when compared to FED or RRW.
Though the number of players who are KDF exclusive is quite small, what of it? If you feel like rolling a KDF toon, then do so, and have fun with it on its own merit. Make your own judgements.

Rom > KDF > Fed
Its a fun story, good ships, different play style, and my KDF Fleet hit T5 a while ago, while its sister Fed fleet is still working T4.
The only reason that I find acceptable to hold back with creating a KDF character is that there might be a repeat of the Delta Recruitment event (or something similar) in the not too far future - and then you'd really want to make a Delta Recruit character. But that is still speculation at this point.
KDF has less ship choices and a smaller player base, but you still wil find plenty of fleets to join, and you can still do any type of PvE content that is available to KDF. (Which includes several unique missions not accessible to Romulan or Federation characters, plus all the faction-agnostic missions that have been added since launch).
The fewer ship choices is primary a concern if you want to spend a lot of Zen on space ships or want an endgame Science Vessel, if not, the primary limitation will be that you'll have a bit less customziation option on the ship you'll have. But the KDF has quite a few neat ships in its line-up, and the Bird of Prey is a class on its own. (There are other ships classified as "Raiders", but the Bird of Prey is the only true Raider. All others are pale imitations of the real deal. Or a Na'Khul Lockbox ship. ) That said, the Bird of Prey can be challenging to fly and if you're used to a typical cruiser play style... this ain't it at all.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
The Mat'Ha is also my favorite tacship. Make it a disruptor cannon build and use the AOE nose cannon console. You won't reach the DPS of a BFAW antiproton ship but it will feel glorious! WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM! * ships explode *
Hey now, I love my helmet wearing mentally handicapped Oddy cousin!
I mean, sure, I don't pvp, but the Bortas'qu is a great ship in PVE and I always have fun. Although I do also love jumping back into my B'rel for some mad fun. Also, the KDF get a lot of doff missions that will generate prisoners and contraband for dil turn in.

Yeah, the KDF faction go the very, very short end of the stick when STO was released which is likely a pretty significant factor regarding it's acceptance by the player base. Based on what I've read, players could not make a KDF toon until they reached level 20 on their Fed toon. On top of that the article I read stated the faction was only for PvP at first.
That's more or less due to the fact that Cryptic only had a two year window to develop STO after they bought the license to make a Star Trek game from Perpetual because they were going bankrupt. If Cryptic could not release the game within two years, the license to develop the game would have expired and all development would had to be halted unless Cryptic paid for either a new license or paid to extend the license. That's assuming those two were options.
Anyway, despite the fact that the KDF got nerfed after it was developed into a full faction, I really enjoy playing the KDF faction. It got nerfed because there were a lot of players in the Federation faction who complained that the KDF had consoles / ships that the Federation faction did not have. Cryptic bowed down to the complaints of these "Feddy Bears" which lead items that were once unique to the KDF to be available to the Feds. One such item is the Plasmonic Leech console. I think Cryptic should have held their ground and not gut the KDF faction of it's uniqueness which made the faction less attractive to play.
Taking away design style and the fact that you can create a half naked Orion character, there is not much left that is unique about the KDF faction. You are basically left with some faction specific missions; the Fek'lhr story arc is arguably one of the best story arcs in the game. There's also the Bird of Prey (BoP) which the Romulan faction also has. It is both more vulnerable than an escort, but at the same time a lot more deadly in the hands of a skilled pilot. The KDF and Romulan are notoriously known for the lack of science ships available to them which is not a positive unique feature. The Romulans are worse off because they only have two science ships available to them; the T5 Ha'nom Science Warbird and the fleet version. Yes, if you decided to play as a Romulan Science captain (which I have), you need to wait until level 40 before you can select your first science ship.
One major advantage the KDF has over the Federation is the ability to get a lot of Dilithium and Contraband from the Doff missions. If I spend around 10 minutes to 15 minutes on finding Doff missions that rewards Dil; I can probably get 3k - 3.5k Dil most of the time with my Fed captains. That includes turning in 5 Contraband for 2k Dil. Spending around 15 minute of searching for Doff missions on a KDF captain I can typical get 6k - 7k Dil most of the time. 5k Dil if a couple of missions fail, or more than 8k if I get a lot of critical success. As for Contraband... I would say my Fed captains can average 2 Contraband per day while my KDF captains can easily get 16 Contraband per day.
My primary KDF character is a level 60 tactical captain that has so far been flying BoPs exclusively since the beginning. It's sad that I have not see any fellow BoP captains in any of the advanced queued missions that I have played since this Janaury.
Amen- the KDF not only get many more opportunities to obtain contraband than their Fed counterparts, but they can actually offload prisoners for decent sums of dil as well. Often, what happens is that my KDF toons get more contraband than they can turn over at once, so I bounce the excess over to my Feds so I've got more of the stuff being turned over at a time.
So from what I've gathered from google, its really not worth playing a KDF character, but those ships just look really cool. my only worry is that a lot of people say the KDF player base is quiet small. Is this true? Thoughts?
K.D.F. is best F.
Federation is for lazy players who are spoonfed a whole game's content.

its the same player base, as probably 2/3 or so of feddies have a kdf, and the other 1/3 are made up for by kdf players, etc. There are plenty of players but its a little harder to find open fleets with fully developed facilities. This is less of a drawback as there are few fleet ships so a full shipyard is only marginally interesting, and apart from tac consoles most of the fleet gear is replacable easily.
kdf gets a cheap leech console, damage boosting officers (pirate), and good ships for anything but science.
Google returns everything from 10 year old info to last week's data in a disorganized blob if you are not really careful about how you searched.
I would just go for it. You get paired with feds in most group content anyway so really the biggest drawback is going to be finding a fleet that has what you need.
The KDF tutorial and first couple of story arcs are actually a lot of fun. Even if you don't level to max, I would recommend playing through the first couple of arcs.
I'm having a ton of fun with my klingon. Though, I will admit, the trading post selection is smaller with certain items for being a klingon. Gotten farther than any other with my klingon.
I have a KDF, ROM and FED main. Hell my KDF to on is the same one I created back in the day you had to hit lvl 25 in fed first before being able to go KDF.
Granted slightly gimped in sci department(have a female sci orion) and she alternates between the raptor carrier and sci pilot raptor(which is ok as a science leaning vessle), but honestly if you want to really go full tilt KDF.
Grab the Mat'ha or the Korean BOP(tried it out, was fun) and run wild.

:< No endgame science vessel?!?!
I thought those KDF science vessels were called Birds of prey?

... My Fleet Varanus still works quite well tyvm
while this is true there are a bunch of any faction science ships you can use either in the c-store and lobi store or sometimes through events.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
level with BoPs so you'll learn to fly em at least a little... and when you fly em right they can be really fun.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
