Just... no! It says quite a bit "to me at least", when a company bribes its customers to use their product in this way, and the bribe isn't even worth it IMO.

Aside from CO and STO, I have no desire to play any other games from PW and/or Cryptic. Because of this, I also have no desire to run Arc, and won't reinstall it even with the bribes.

Shhhh, you'll insult the Ferengi in accounting.

Not real interested. The problem, for me, is having to input a pin from email every time I fire up ARC, and deal with multiple emails on the subject. As a one time thing, sure, it's not arduous, but as an every time thing... meh.

    Steam just works.

Oh, you mean how Arc defender doesn't recognize the same computer and same IP, even though that's what it's supposed to do and that they refuse to fix it because they don't think it's broken? If so, then yeah, I have that same issue and it's annoying as hell.

Looks like a good reward system, can't argue with freebies for doing basically no work!

I switched from Steam a while ago, when they started doing local currencies and it buggered up the transactions with some games. Had no problems with Arc so far.

Uh huh. Tell all three of my computers that. When I run it the memory usage skyrockets to 78 - 82% with nothing else running within minutes. That is on all of them, so don't tell me its a computer issue.

Statement: It's a computer issue. I have no problems with it.

Query: Have you updated the launcher recently? What is your OS?

From the blog on Arc rewards:

Completing quests will give you experience points to level up your Arc Quests level. Each level requires 600 XP and will reward you with 500 Arc Points that can be transitioned into ZEN or other in-game currencies available for games on the Arc platform. There is no level cap to your Arc profile, so you will continue to receive rewards as you complete your quests. These points will be redeemable via the Charge tab on the Arc website and client.

Still don't see a precise ratio of Arc to Zen, but I do notice it says the Arc points can be converted into zen "or other in-game currencies", which could also mean dil/ec/astral diamonds/gold/etc, given the categorization of Marks as a currency they could be included as well.

Judging from the redeem rewards screenshot in the dev blog, 5,000 Arc points = 500 Zen, 10,000 Arc points = 1,000 Zen, etc. And Trendy did say earlier that 1,000 Arc points = $1 (which is 100 Zen).

It takes 600 XP to level (and it seems that's for every level up). 1 level gives you 500 Arc points, so you would get 500 Zen every 10 levels.

The thing is, there's no indication as to how much XP any daily quests will get you. Would you be able to get enough to level up once per day? Or will it take a few days to level up? If you could level up once per day it would take 10 days to get enough points for 500 Zen. But if it takes a few days to level up once, it could take a couple weeks or even a month for such a small amount of Zen that can't get you much. Also, take into account the high prices in the various game's cash shops. T6 ships in STO cost 3,000 zen (or a lot more if you're going for a large bundle item).

So.......You would need to gain 60 levels to get 30,000 Arc points to trade for Zen to get a T6 ship. And that would probably take months to get.

Judging from the 'Redeem your Points' screenshot, it seems pretty constant. 5k points for 500 Zen, 10k for 1k Zen, 30k for 3k Zen, etc. There doesn't seem to be an option where if you save up your points you can get a large quantity of Zen at a discount (example: 2k Zen could cost 18k Arc points instead of 20k, or 3k Zen could cost 27k Arc points instead of 30k).

I have the same issue in Firefox where I will be asked for my PIN when logging into the STO forums or the Arc website. This only happens if I clear my browsing history, and it only asks me once after each time I clear everything. Probably a browser cookie. So if you don't accept cookies or have them cleared from your browser on a regular basis, this is why it asks for your PIN every time.

My thoughts on this Arc reward system:

I'm not going to install games I have no interest in just to get free Zen once in a while. It's nothing personal. Other PWE games I have no interest in.

More Zen being generated could mean prices in the dilithium exchange could slowly come down over time. That would be a good thing for buyers, but sellers wouldn't be too happy. So this reward system may have very little, if any, impact. It really depends on how many players participate and how fast they can earn Zen through the system.

Then again, someone on the internet recently said something along the lines of "The pubs are too stupid to realize that only a few people control the economy" (referring to the dil exchange since they were talking about people complaining on the STO forums of the prices going up). If true, it could mean more Zen coming in will give incentive to manipulate the market even further.

Honestly, I don't think I'd use this system. It seems too tedious and I am now seriously considering making a full time switch to Steam, because it would make my computer run faster to not have both Arc and Steam here...

That's a good place to start, but 1.) I'm using Chrome, 2.) I accept almost all cookies, and C.) I pretty much never delete or clear them. This also happens every single time I try to log in from my phone. The same phone I've had for more than a year. Using the same browser. Chrome. Which shares its login and password saves across devices. Which also accepts cookies. Which I also never clean out. Unfortunately, at this point, I can safely rule out that it's the user not accepting and/or clearing out cookies. In this case, I think the issue lies with Arc Defender. Sorry.

You can always turn arc defender off and then the issue with logging your PC etc will cease to exist.

How do I disable Arc Defender or remove saved computers?

Arc Defender is designed to provide additional security for your account so we strongly recommend against disabling it, however, if you wish to do so, please follow these steps:
Open Arc and log in to your account
Click the Arc symbol in the upper left corner, hover the mouse over Settings, and select General
Check the box next to "Disable Arc Defender", re-enter your account credentials, and click Continue

When it becomes mandatory thats when I will say bye to STO

But that's not really of any significance to them. I won't use ARC as well as I have no need for it and can use the game with it's native launcher. Mac users can't use it, but that's not an issue really since Mac support simply doesn't exist any more, the Mac playerbase is officially gone. So I wonder why they won't outright do it with ARC, the vast majority (almost everybody I'd guess) won't mind ARC and probably already use it since new players don't even know you don't have to.

    That's what I'm wondering.

That they "bribe" people to use ARC is not really a sign of any failure of delivering a decent software (nor is it a sign that it is a decent software ;) ). It's advertisement. Just like the free giveaway ships in STO are advertisement, it doesn't mean STO is a TRIBBLE game that no one would play.

For someone that actually plays several Perfect World titles, Arc might indeed be interesting. If you only really play STO like me, it's pretty much superflous.

I think mandatory Arc use will not happen that soon, because they certainly don't want players to be stuck in the launcher and unable to play the game because they didn't hear the message.

That's real strange. It must be something with your ISP, fooling ARC into thinking you're logging in from a new location? Or maybe a security setting?

I log into ARC daily, with no problems. Put in the PIN the very first time, and never again unless I actualy log in from another device. That said, I do know a good flushing of cookies and saved data in your browser will prompt ARC Defender again, but the actual client doesn't seem to repeat offend.

So if the 5000pts = 500Z ratio is correct i'm going to guess that in order to earn the equivalent of a T6 ship (3000Z = 30,000pts or 50 levels) you'd be looking at what 3-4 months maybe?
That's roughly how long it would take to grind out the equivalent dilithium/zen in game at the current exchange rates using the 3 free characters.
They aren't going to give out any massive reward but I guess for those regular players who log in daily this could be quite rewarding. Seems a fair reward system for daily use of the game and any quests.

As for Arc itself I've never had a n issue with it except for that godawful Defender nonsense that thinks i'm on a different PC randomly. Resource wise I've never noticed much of an issue.

For a series of grind-intensive games, when all I want to do is role-play in the Trek universe and forget, for a few hours, that I'm not actually a Starfleet Officer or a Romulan operative... now I have to grind OUTSIDE of the game, including forced playing of other, non-Trek games? No thank you.

I'll skip the $0.005/day and keep using the native Cryptic/STO launcher for as long as possible.
