As much as I'd love to have a T5U Excelsior Bathtub Class (god that ship is just THAT good), it'd just feel really weird in the long run.
My alt is a Romulan and should have a Romulan ship.
My alt is a Fed (a SCIENCE no less) and should have Fed ships (including that amazing bathtub class).
My alt is a Klingon and should have KDF ships.
There are just some limits that should be fairly set in stone. Now if, though a series of nearly impossible and NEVER NERFED solo events, I can steal another faction's ship for use, then I'd be ok. Those people would have earned the right to use said ship and can/should use it as a badge of honor.

PWE/Cryptic's opinion) all you need to do is pull out your wallet and spend, spend, spend. "It doesn't have to make sense, just buy our damn ships!"
cold hard truth right there
You mean the fact that Cryptic's running a business not a charity?
Also remember this, back when Romulans were first announced the restriction of other factions T5 ships didn't exist, Cryptic originally planned to let Romulans use any ship from their chosen ally. The T5 restriction was added due to player backlash about how no one would make a Fed or KDF character if making a Romulan effectively doubled your ship options at max level.
Being a "business" is one thing- taking people to the cleaners is a whole different level.
I don't begrudge any business for making money- but holding back content I PAID for (T5-T6 ships) from my Romulan just because they're trying to market more ships I certainly do. That's not "entitlement" that's called being a CUSTOMER. And if it really was a matter of "balance" then there's tons of other "balance" issues in this game that were existent before the Romulans were even introduced that have yet to be fixed.
Bottom line here is it's about MONEY not balance. They haven't balanced out the ship options for KDF still, and now even after the Romulan release it's twice as worse. (Can you say Science ship options?)
Argue all you want- the truth is staring you in the face.
It's not you- it's me. I just need my space.
Being critical doesn't take skill. Being constructively critical- which is providing alternative solutions or suggestions to a demonstrated problem, however, does.

At the point you want they might as well just scrap having three factions altogether and blend them all into a seemless hivemind where everyone is completely the same.

Actually the only thing I wish would happen is for them to fix the mess they created in the first place- rather than continuing to build mess upon mess, as is also evident in the Tier system (T5, T-5U, T6, etc.) but I'm definitely not holding my breath and turning blue waiting for it to happen.
They either need to revamp the factions completely- or when they introduce it be more careful as to how they paywall and shoehorn people into things. That said, had I known they would lock out content previous to the Romulus release, I wouldn't have even bothered to spend ANY money on ships or anything- because I disagree with how it was implemented.
And that's probably why they did what they did, the way they did it- because they knew damn well people would be discontent with it.
I don't want everything to be "the same", and if you checked my post history you'd see where I argue against things like genericizing the skill system so that now it doesn't matter what career path you pick, you'll soon have the ability to gain access to other career paths' skills, etc.
I do however, disagree that they implemented a completely separate faction that's supposedly "allied" with another- which you can pilot ships up to T4 then you're locked out of anything above that.
I also agree that Fed/KDF would be discontent with Romulans having access to more ships- HOWEVER, customers didn't create this "problem", did they?

Seriously, you would think there'd be a way to earn their trust to captain the upper tier ships. Just a series of episodes would have gone a long way.

Which brings us to the reputation system... which is also a complete mess, and poorly implemented as well.

The whole of New Romulus is a mess. Why do they keep such shoddy items that constantly break in their main settlement?

Saved by the marketing strategies! Ending up as another miscellaneous and largely inconsequential -main- faction random subspecies, would no doubt do wonders to the now almost eradicated self-esteem, that can only be found in more defined entities. ;-)

Indeed. And the last thing we need now is another half-a$$ed implementation of yet another faction (Cardassian, etc.) which is just going to layer itself on top of the same.
Someone at Cryptic/PWE needs to pull their heads out of their.... and really develop a nice long-term sustainable strategy instead of the half-baked releases they come up with. Apparently there's a lot of ADHD players who....
... oh look, a shiny new T6 ship!

Playing a Romulan is interesting in that they must choose a side. To that end I think its perfectly reasonable that these characters who are making such an alignment would at some point be able to command a ship of the faction they chose to defend. In the spirit of that reality, I think its time that Rom characters should be able to also play the ships of the side they decided to align with.
I can see so many issues with this I'm not even entirely sure I know where to start. A couple of highlights then:
Aside from the already mentioned 'Let's make the old factions effectively irrelevant', T5/T6 'top tier ships' in some cases still hold high end faction specific equipment. Allies or not, TP-wise there are some things which don't get shared. I mean, sure, with the recent trend to design a new, mostly T6, Fedship and skin it out to KDF/Roms then there's isn't a huge impact across all ship lines, but those are technically already available, so, meh.
As it currently sits, T1-T4 ships are already open to Roms from the KDF/Fed but not the reverse. In both gameplay and RP terms that's something that might want to be addressed before anyone looks at the top tier.
Yep it's a business not Gene Roddenberry's crappy utopia BS where everything is free.
And I'm sure you'd be complaining endlessly if financial hardship was eradicated and you yourself didn't need to work but could simply be productive. How is this even relevant? (<--- Rhetorical, btw)
What everyone buying Zen are really saying while all these bugs are still floating freely:

Well, by the 29th century the Klingons and Romulans have joined the Federation...

No that they are running a greedy as sin, with no quality in sight, or value for your money cash grab. Its *A* business model, not really a good one but its there.
