Not that I have bothered to read more than a couple of sentenses into the article, but I would rather see these things translated into quick missions and make use of the awesome Utopia Planitia map that hasn't been available in ages.

I loved the story, but the Trekkie in me saw only one thing wrong with it. Miles O'Brien was an enlisted officer, was he not? Meaning he would not have the rank of a commissioned officer, right? But I'm sure when Starfleet Academy made him a professor (after he left Deep Space Nine), they gave him an honorary degree. Just being picky.

The guy in question is Kirayoshi "Yoshi" O'Brien  Miles' and Keiko's son.

I hope we get to meet these characters in the next First Contact Day event.

Actually, I'd like to see the Sol System in general get some love. We don't need social maps or anything, but some one-off missions on Mars or Titan or Jupiter Station would be very cool.

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

Only makes sense he would be the chief engineer.

He probably did an online degree. It is the 24th Century, after all. He probably was streaming or viewing recorded classes via the holodeck. The holodeck could simulate anything that he would need to do on a practical level. He probably got credits for his military experience, too. I am pretty sure Wesley did some of his academy studies while on board the Enterprise and got credit for his experiences there.

Side note...Many enlisted officers have degrees even today. It is practically a requirement to get promoted these days.

Oh God, I'm embarassed. I should've known that! :disappointed: I remember seeing his son back at Memory Alpha in the early days. I should read more of the lore... and not just because I need it for the daily dilithium Academy assignment.

My Chief Engineer Two of Twenty would probably add drlyly that 'just because this is a Republic ship non-romulans are still barred from obtaining or consuming romulan ale for any reason, ESPECIALLY during their shift.

    "Romulan Ale should be illegal"-Worf
    "It is!"- LaForge
"Guess who's coming to dinner!"- Chekov

I'm amazed that no one has noticed the tip o' the hat to the current Beam Fire At Will meta-strategy of maximizing EPS Transfer that's being used to reach peak DPS by a lot of captains.
Whetu started to hold out her hand, nearly dropped her PADD, then switched it to her other hand and shook O’Brien’s. “Thank you, sir. We’ve been reading all about your work on bringing the Enterprise to the top of the performance curve. A lot of it made it into the recommended revisions for the Odyssey-class in general.”

Elyos interjected dryly, saying, “I believe I saw your hand in some of those EPS modifications mentioned in the recent Jayce’s article.”

O’Brien laughed and released Whetu’s hand. He inclined his head briefly toward the Deltan and said, “Yeah, they got really excited about the upgraded capacities, especially for the phaser emitters. They’ve got that sort of militaristic heritage; you know, their largest subscriber base is Andorian. The captain reads them!”

“Why would Captain Shon read Jayce’s?” asked Elyos, looking puzzled. “He commands one of the top ships of the fleet. He’s not going to learn anything new from them.”
I guess this means that r/stobuilds is our internet's version of Jayce's?

I know it is down right silly of me, but I'd like to see articles from the KDF and Romulan Republic ship design/upgrade teams as well.

"The adventures of Whetu and Elyos: Making spacedock-life interesting in the 25th century". Those two personalities really make a great comedic duo. I love it!

Nice read! I loved how they brought in the Jayce's Interstellar "magazine", I really do hope we see more of those in the future I realise they're a lot of work but it's a great marketing tool I think.

Yeah, following the Trek, and certainly STO, trend of most children growing up to be clones of their parents:

_ Akira Sulu: Captain, same as his grandfather and mother (though that is technically non-canon).
    - Miral Paris: Engineer like her mother.
    - Kirayoshi O'Brien: Engineer like her father
    - Naomi Wildman: Not clear what she did prior to taking command of K7 but nonetheless, Starfleet Officer who appears to have used Janeway and her mother as role-models

I mean, fair enough that becoming a Starfleet Officer is something that everyone should aspire to in the Trek Universe - but come on...

One of things I enjoyed about Jake Sisko's character who, wihilst not well used, broke that trend.
Demora Sulu is canon! Not that we know much about her in canon....
