Latency Investigations

pwlaughingtrendypwlaughingtrendy Member Posts: 2,966 Arc User
Hey folks,

Now that I'm back from vacation, I'm trying to lock down the latency issues. Here's a little bit of transparency into my investigation. We have two separate teams effectively looking at this: Net and Software.

Software - The software team has been already on the case and figuring out where from their end they can improve and investigate. Are certain powers and abilities causing lag? Number crunching resistance? Kemo spam? They're looking into it.

Net- The net operations team is looking into it purely from a networking standpoint. Is Cogent whining again? How's Internap doing? Are a majority of the problems coming from a specific ISP (Internet-Service-Provider) or seemingly localized in Michigan? Are they happening at certain times in the day?

Software is already doing their part to try and help. For Net though, I'm looking into a couple things.

    Sorry My Fault Again.

    ISP- Charter Communications
    Geo Location: Michigan
Date and Time: Most Times, but mostly concentrated in the evening, EST during peal hours.

Most issues for me are during Borg STF's. My More detailed reports are.... you know where.

I haven't been on since last night before the server restart. Is this a new latency thing or just general clearing things up?

    For the general latency issues

    ISP - Verizon DSL
Location - Texas (all of my areas traffic goes through Dallas even though it is over 200 miles away)
Date/time - about 9:00 PM US central time I get random spikes of latency until about 12:00 AM. With few exceptions all other times are buttery smooth.

Borg STFs seem problematic for me when playing with people from far outside my area. The latest example of that was last weekend. I played ISA with 2 Germans, 1 Englishman, and a Floridian (fleeties). It was bugged bad and I twitched my way through it. The borg disco before it was not at all like that and pugging borg STFs do not normally produce the problem. I would say that, other than when Cogent is the problem, STOs latency issues are minor for me.

Kemo spam seems to be the one that grinds it to a halt. Most noticeable in Crystalline Entity (CCA) instances that have kemo users. Other than that, it's just the odd hiccup.

Date + time of day - Can't give you any specific data, latency occurs very irregulary, sometimes I have problems, sometimes it's very smooth. However, I'd say I've experienced latency every day (but not constantly) since Winter Wonderland started.

Date + Time of Day - While it has been better as of late, still reporting this. I'm usually all over the place for playing times. Though around 10pm to 1am MST is when I've been playing (though not now, I'm reporting). I'll add in as well I noticed it becoming an issue not too long after Winter Wonderland showed up. I think two days after it hit.

Time of day- Large Lag spike almost every night at exactly midnight my time. I am 99% sure its not the net my end causing this, since I am unable to recreate these lag spikes for any other game or program at this time, and speedtest shows connection to be solid at that time as well.

The rest of the time the lag is all over the place. I have brief periods of no lag other than the expected latency for the distance. Most of the time it varies wildly, from barely noticable, to counting 5-10 seconds before abilities activate.

I do not spen alot of time in multiplayer content, most of my results are during solo play of story missions. On multiple occasions I have had to abandon missions after the lag becomes too infuriating, or my character is left frozen.

Computer itself is not the issue, I run perfectly smooth all the time between 40 and 130FPS.

Tracert gives me issues at the same location others have suggested. Multiple runs gives the same or similar results.

I have the biggest issues when playing ISA and CCA, especially when i run with good dps teams. Usually, even ground instances, like BHE or BOTSE are full of lag on my end.

Date/Time: It's random to me. Sometimes I have nothing at all and sometimes I rubberband some. I've been in the WW since beginning, so rubberbanding in there once in awhile when running to get to a race. Otherwise, there have been random d/c which are on my end when I lose all my USB connections at once for a few seconds.
Now a LTS and loving it.

Date + Time of Day - Tray Console activation lag/failures both space and ground are a constant since join date early 2014 resulting in very frustrating gameplay when necessary abilities fail to activate and must be monitored for many seconds at a time to confirm activation. Hotkey or shortcut methods of activation respond better than actual clicking on the ability.

Kemo lag use by others still noticeable resulting in very low FPS (kemo use confirmed using combatlog reader).

A lot of rubberbanding during the last Anniversary event at popular social zones.

Minor lag during races (Risa surfing, Winter Wonderland ice race) in terms of obtaining a flag claim popup while the majority seem to claim it before me almost every time despite pressing the F key repeatedly.

Otherwise gameplay latency lag and connection stability acceptable, although I tend to play the more popular content (ISA, CCA, battlezones, BOTSE, GTGA) so cannot speak for the rest of the STF content that takes longer to organize in pre-made teams.

Question: do you need a tracert, and is the information provided in it safe to be displaying on a public forum?

I have only issues when I change maps, like normal space to Red Alert, or some patrol missions, there's a huge loading period and sometimes I see written in red that server is not responding. I'm not in home now to run a tracert but there's the general info:

Lag for me has normally been worst at 0300-0400 hrs (MST, GMT-7). The last few days however, it's occurring even during prime time & in Q's winter wonderland. Until last night, I never saw rubber-banding in the "Fastest Game on Ice", during which I was snapped back to the Breen chase character and forward again! Many DR maps are inherently laggy, and more so in recent days.

the new terran t5 rep can cause a lot of software and graphic lag.

After yesterday's restart, the launcher is a lot slower to load. The game loads fine for me but it laggy when loading the maps. In one case, I waited over 3 minutes with no SNR for a map to load from 98 on the loading counter. Some prompts, especially within the Winter Wonderland take a few seconds to actually trigger from the point of pressing.

I typically don't experience much lag, once in a great while. Usually during CCA and the like. But adding my tracert in hopes it may help. Note the bold section...

I've actually not had much latency issues in the last 2 weeks...some occasional frame-rate stutters when the shots start flying in a few stfs, but it calms down quickly, and I get no more trouble....

    For what it's worth...:

Been quite wonky for me since thursdays patch, all can be fine then utter chaos erupts, unresponsive ship, power sliding all over the place, powers not activating etc.

Checked my connection afterwards and all "seemed" fine my end as far as i could tell.

Extreme rubber-banding on ESD. Pretty much any time (especially right now, as I make this post). Occasionally in other social zones.

NOTE: items 2 and 17 are probably devices configured to ignore ping requests.

Also, I feel the need to point out that tracert doesn't actually represent sending a signal from A to B. It's basically pinging each of the intermediaries in sequence. The listed times are the times taken by that step to respond... if it bothers to respond at all.
