It depends on the server architecture and their shut down/startup procedures. At my last job, it took 4-6 hours to restart one of our production systems whenever it went down. It had a lot of issues (made the daily WTF), but it worked, and survived several attempts to replace it with "better" systems.
It sounds like CCP made some good decisions 5+ years ago. Cryptic has to live with decisions made under Atari 6+ years ago. Rearchitecting the game would be a major undertaking, for little perceived value. (I've done it. It took my team a year, and while the new version was cleaner, and internally more flexible, we delivered no new features to the user.)

So we get a two hour maintenance just because people are either a) too lazy to not log out in WW or b) too stupid to just log back in and do a safe login? This could have easily waited until the next scheduled maintenance.

    1) We don't know what consequences those failed logins have server-side.
    2) Even if it's all there is, two hours of downtime (and attendant players frustration) probably outweigh extra week of failed logins (and attendant player frustration, CS trouble and accusations of running a shoddy server.)

    (about the eve discussion)

They have one game they have to manage, that is the ONLY thing they have that actually matters in anyway, that is all everyone in the company actually really works on. You cannot compare a company that is so small to a massive company like PWE who has tons of games they have to work on

    And what about the Admirality?

I completed the Federation tour of duty and got the 2 specialisation points rewarded. I also completed the Klingon tour of duty got the progress bar up to 10/10 but STILL no 30K Dilithium. (completed it a few WEEKS ago :/ ). Not even after the update yesterday... please look into it again.

I also want to congratulate PWE for adding the Badlands BattleZone, i did'nt had so much fun in months, thnx for adding it :-)

I had the same problem but I finally got my 10th Klingon ToD mission yesterday evening. The fix seems to work.

Sorry but CCP have 4 games : Eve Online, Dust 514, Eve Valkyrie and Project Legion.
PWE don't have tons of games, they have 10. Also, it is not PWE who is working on sto but Cryptic Studios with 3 games, Champions, Neverwinter and STO.
I am from Belgium and english isn't my main language, sorry if I make mistakes.

Surely it couldn't be a PWE employee who after seeing this, got in contact with Cryptic regarding a Holodeck unique bug affecting all customers, tested by a joint-initiative force of players, PWE staff, and Cryptic staff to do a super late night Tribble test and follow up with an early morning maintenance to make sure that players could log into the Winter event without having login issues.

    Surely.

    ...

Honestly it was the combined effort of a lot of people who care: PWE, Cryptic, and players. We want to make sure that you can have a fun experience and not have to go through potentially 3+ login errors when getting to the game. That's not fun and we want to fix that. So we're fixing that.

My friend also has the kdf 10/10 bug still.

After collecting one characters admiralty rewards I figured out what most likely is the reason for this maintenance. I didn't go any further once I saw it was giving 30k dilithium to me on some of the projects. I guess fixing the game server problem is nice too but this kind of exploit which I have no idea how it was done and I stopped right then and there once I saw it has to be the true reason for this down time lol.

you get that dil for finishing specific levels of admirality. they're one time bonuses, not accidental.

And one time bonus(es) i did not received it ONCE!!! the way i see it it is just a trick to get people playing it. I still am wondering what kind of "reward" people will get when they reach lvl 10. I don't expect it to be overwhelming ;)

    YA Know...
If you look under the OVERVIEW Tab in the DOff Window, it tells you EXACTLY WHAT YOU'LL GET when you complete Each Level of the Admiralty System.
(just like it does for Crew Doffing and R&D research)

And we are very grateful for your effort. But this shouldn't be your job in the first place. This issue was reported one day after last week's patch in the proper section of the forum (support). And it went unnoticed for an entire week until YOU took over the reigns yesterday. This is absolutely no critisism of you. I think you are doing a terrific job. But why do we even need a bug forum if the information inside doesn't get passed along to the people who are responsible? This newest chapter only tells us one thing, people reporting bugs under "general discussion" get noticed, others don't.

It's sorta a weird reporting thing. Monitors didn't pick it up as a full-scale crash to desktop, so no flags appeared there. The nature of this bug in particular was.. weird. I just helped facilitate getting it resolved with my resources.

While I would agree that this isn't my explicit job to Q/A this stuff, it is my job to take care of you: the players.
