Updated my graphics to the new AMD/ATI crimson and my game now gets to the new dawn splash screen before freezing.
I then have to ctrl, alt and delete to get back to the desktop to see an error gameclient.exe has stopped working.
I've tried reinstalling the game but no dice.

This is definitely an issue between the drivers and the game, I have the same GPU and after updating to the new drivers STO just crashes on the splash screen, but I'm not reverting the drivers as Fallout 4 gains benefits from them, soo.. guess I can't play STO for now.
Cryptic putting their name on the product is usually a pretty big clue...
It's sad that a full year later and the AA is still messed up. Funny enough, another issue I started getting from the winter event last year is still not fixed either. Anytime I use headphones and combat happens, the game instantly crashes to desktop with no notice. They found the issue in their fmods, but they never fixed it. A year later, and it still crashes. A Year later and the AA still seems to be causing them problems. Given the fact that they're now having people entirely unable to play the game, maybe they'll get around to doing something about it before leaving on vacations this time, but again... It's Cryptic, so who knows.
Amazing advice, worked for me after encountering this issue (would have been better if i had checked here before re-installing the game first!!!!)
