Which "version" of Trek does STO remind you of the most?

Although some of STO's episodes and arcs are obviously themed after specific series, what version of Trek does STO as a whole remind you of the most?

Well...as much as I hate JJTrek...I'd probably have to say JJTrek...because STO is all about blowing ships up in space and shooting people on the ground.

I think it's more like the Original Series. Kirk was quick to get into a fight much like we are in STO.

I think, with the near constant wars, it seems most similar to DS9. To me at least. Though I've never watched the reboots, so I wouldn't know about them.

I actually picture STO as a possible continuation of TNGs "All Good Things" anti-time future which seemed also more warlike. Of course STO is all about shooting but it's a rather simple game mechanic.

    Deep Space 9.

Mostly because the Klingons are our enemies in one mission, grudgingly cooperating despite being at war in another mission, neutral to us in another mission then allies by the Iconian Idiot War. Similar with the Romulans. Sometimes some are friendly and other times they're not.

The Federation is always being beset by some foe or another and spends much of the time at war with someone or another. Most obvious is the Idiot War where we're fighting a numerically superior enemy that uses genetic slaves as their soldiers The Dominion use the engineered Jem'Hadar, the Iconians use engineered Heralds. The ultimate example of slave races.

But I'd put Voyager as a close second, especially when you reach Delta Rising and head off to the Delta Quadrant.

JJ Trek. Some of the stories have been good, but the emphasis is defintely on 'shoot first, questions later'.

I actually agree. For the record, I enjoy STO a lot. But I think I enjoy it because it is more action focused than story focused; that's simply what I want to play in a video game. And while I actually prefer the opposite in my movies, the JJ-movies just happen to be the closest in "feel" to this game.

DS9 was really the only significant Trek with a long running story arc and a heavy emphasis on war. So DS9 seems to fit the best. But it's still very different, because in DS9 we were mostly on a station.

Unfortunately, I feel like they kinda miss some of the cooler aspects of DS9. The stories and characters were more complex, and that's really something that STO is missing. In that regard, I am not sure what it fits best. Maybe TOS? It wasn't really strong on moral ambiguity, for example.

Funny. I chose Enterprise because they're still feeling their way around things, making mistakes, but coming across some sort of resolution (mot of the time).

I agree with this. We are seeing a Federation and Starfleet irrevocably scarred by the Dominion War; after that, there was no going back to the pacifist utopia garbage of the TNG era, no more waiting for threats to be at one's doorstep before dispatching them, and no more refusing to do basic things like a) fail to provide ground combat training AND adequate equipment to Starfleet officers, b) fail to maintain standing ground combat forces (we know the MACOs are back and the rep armors hint at other special ground forces), c) fail to maintain an adequate number of ships with heavy armaments to drive back even the biggest baddies, or d) failing to hit back with force when hit by others.

DS9 was about conflict at it's core. The Bajoran/Cardassian struggles, the Dominion War, and even Sisko's eternal struggles over the loss of his wife and the forced upon stature of Religious Icon. STO is all about struggle. Each season brings us in conflict with some new bag guy. Each season has us going out and blowing up ships to advance the story so that we can go out and kill more bad guys.

DS9. How could it be anything else?

It was the only series that focused on long running large scale conflicts, the only series that regularly involved fleets, Sisko leading the fight against the Dominion was about as close as any of the leads got to being an Admiral (while they were still leads anyway), and it was the series that focused least on exploration.

There were a number of things that separated DS9 from 'traditional' Star Trek; and STO is pretty much built around those things.

Outside the sound effects, that are straight copy paste, STO doesn't remind me of star trek at all.

You'd have to make the game 3D but way more importantly, piloting from the bridge.

    I played:
    http://gamecola.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/184721-star-trek-starfleet-academy-starship-bridge-simulator-snes.png

Which is a star trek game from 1997, in full 3D with piloting from the bridge. So from my perspective, STO is at least 20 years outdated.

That being said, the monetization and whale milking has been quite the interesting experiment to follow.

I'd say it has aspects of both DS9 and Voyager. All the good ones atleast.

I like the mystery and exploration which reminds me of Voyager but the large scale warfare is reminiscent of DS9.

DS9 is more "culture-wise", more deveristy, and the ST:NG is more of exploring known parts.
Klingons on dp9 are more open-minded and not really hostile, Bajorian Prophets made the series more interesting right from very first episode made Capt Sisko a central focus in defeating dominion wars years later.

No, you absolutely don't. That might be one of the most impractical interfaces to play a space ship game then one could think of.

The combat from the bridge? That's what Star Trek did when it didn't have the money to do the real battle with models or CGI.

JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I agree with deep space 9, but I still want my exploration because deep space 9 had plenty of "Star trek" (read exploration/discovery) in it too.

Toss-up between DS9 and JJ Trek, for all the reasons previously stated... I chose to vote DS9 because STO still has untapped potential which, IMO, the new Star Wars Trek movies lack.
