I just came back, I play solo since I do not have time to properly commit to a fleet. My question is, what happened to this community?
Used to be a nice, helpful player base, now its just a bunch of greedy, spoiled, rotten jerks. I experience this every single time I log in, don't even get into a PVE queue because all they will do is insult you because you didn't spend tons of zen and time upgrading gear. I played this from the beginning, I'm not that bad even with my lousy crafted gear, I don't have access to fleet gear, and they sure let you know it. Solo instances, like Nukara for example, good luck. they will come down, steal your kills and spots and make it impossible to finish quests.
This isn't a one time deal, this happens every time I log in. Then I go to the forums for answers and God forbid you ask a question that has been asked before, all you get is jerk troll responses telling you how stupid you are for not using the search function. I tried to get some friends and new players in, 5 minutes of chat and they didn't want anything to do with this game.
So, great job forum moderators, great job vets, chase away new players and this game will die. Maybe some people do not have 10 hours a day to farm better gear or dil, it's that OK with you? So much content I cant even access because of nasty players, and I have already decided not to invest money in a game with such a nasty, pathetic community.

The community is generally pretty good. The forums... like any game, it's where a lot of players will come to complain. And sometimes those complaints are taken way too far. The Mods and Devs are pretty good at removing the worst of the posts, the ones that clearly violate the ToS or are just plain disgusting or violent. But they're not overly heavy-handed, which for the most part is appreciated.
What I'd suggest to you is find a casual fleet - one that views 'committment' as simply logging in and being a generally nice person to chat with. Sit around in orbit of ESD, and you'll likely get spammed for invites. Then see which fleet accepts casuals, or just generally seems like friendly folk. Usually it'll be a fleet that already has the majority of projects completed, because otherwise the leaders might be hard on the membership to contribute to the projects. Although there are start-up fleets that are looking for people to get in and create a friendly atmosphere from the beginning as well.
There are places to look, too. Check out the fleet recruiting sections in the faction-specific sub-forums. Read up on the fleets and see which one offers the type of gameplay / community you're looking for. You can also call-out in ESD Zone chat for a fleet invite, and say what you're looking for. Fleet recruiters often hang around on the base itself, although ESD Zone chat can be... well, ESD Zone chat
Either way, don't despair too much. It's still a Star Trek game, which means there are a lot of friendly Trekkies to be found. Sometimes that gets hidden behind a few trolls, but the community in general is still a good place!
The forum part happens way too much, sometimes people need to pull back and stop trying to be the 'forum police.'
As for the second part, Star Trek Online Zone chat is the worst hive of scum and villainy since Mos Eisley space port. Never try to talk to people or ask for help in Zone Chat, it's a pure waste of time. Zone Chat is a completely unmoderated free for all where people are allowed to say anything regardless of how hateful, racist, sexist, or anything else.
It seems that perhaps you're past the point where you're willing to try, but if you have questions about the game, there actually are quite a few people on this forum that will try to help you.
Tactical Team sucked, once upon a time. I got it buffed. Don't think for a minute that Cryptic ignores forum feedback.

Star Trek Battles member. Want to roll with a good group of people regardless of fleets and not have to worry about DPS while doing STFs? Come join the channel and join in the fun!

All I can tell you is just minimize the chat box and go on your merry. I think I need to change my sig box.

Thanks again, you have given me hope
I'm going to have to join up with that one.
This is what I do. If someone is really abusive, they get added to my ignore list.
Some people have really twisted priorities and/or entitlement issues (see first world problems) and treat the game as if it were a life or death matter. It's best to play the way that is most fun for you and disregard anyone who tries to tell you otherwise. Win or lose, I still manage to enjoy the game.
edit:
tho this one has more gorn jokes and swtor has jawa jokes
I just finish up the mission(s) as best I can then go afk for a bit and make myself a cup of tea.
My suggestion is try to find a casual/newb-friendly fleet, there are many fleets (mine included) that don't mind if you don't log in for a couple of months at a time! Also, fleet members tend to be nicer to each other than random people in PuGs.
Another good policy is to get into chat options and untick 'zone', this will result in a much cleaner (and significantly less stressful) ESD/Beta Quadrant experience.
Aside from those two suggestions all I can say is just do your best to stay calm and disregard the whiners/trolls antics. The Ignore button works wonders for this.
Good Hunting, and good luck.
And doing this is making the experience any better?
If you think there is a problem look for a way to fix it rather than complain. Problems will never get resolved if you never take action to resolve it. For me, I only positively respond to people in the game and in my PVE groups. Even to those that are very mean or negative. I am trying to change by example, mostly. And by force of positive reaction.

When everything's gone wrong somehow?
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour
This is the time, this is the place
So we look for the future
But there's not much love to go round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion
This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we're given
Use them and let's start trying
To make it a place worth living in
Or, in other words, if you think the community sucks, change it. Be nice and helpful, don't get provoked by trolls and show you're better.

Zone chat is something you definitely want to turn off, no good can come from seeing a barrage of text from the most disagreeable people that ever came out of a dog's TRIBBLE. I turned it off and it had improved my mood and experience in the game. Put on "Ignore" the ones that actually went the extra mile to PM you with their nonsense.
The Forums? Well I'll tell you, I have by far worst experiences in the APB Reloaded forums and don't get me started with their in-game community. That's not to say everything is beautiful on this side of the fence. You have your types that I believe are just here for the sole purpose of hijacking threads or trolling them. You have some folks here that are just out to insult but bring nothing to the table in terms of ideas or even answers to questions, complain, complain, insult someone , complain , troll , complain hijack a thread , complain. My advice is to ignore them, continue with whatever it is you want to get out and stick to what you want to get out and if you feel satisfied with that then you should be "ok" with the forums as well.
Don't give up on the game because of some rotten people, for all the problems the game may have you can bet your TRIBBLE the same folks that trash the game would be moaning in pain if Cryptic pulled the plug on it.
Stay strong bro.
I saw too much of that when I worked in retail. WAY too much. The only way I was able to make ANY difference in the sometimes hostile store where I worked was to remind myself and my team that the only thing we could control was our own behavior, and that we should not use other peoples' inappropriate behavior as an excuse to let fly with whatever snarky or disrespectful thing might pop into our heads (even if it might feel really good at the time). It's best to focus on problems and not on people, and if things get REALLY bad, use "ignore" or contact a moderator without fanning the flames in public. The equivalent at the store where I worked was that if someone crossed the line from annoying to threatening, we would then end up having to call the cops...and in that part of town, it happened more than I would have wished. Nothing, however, was served by being deliberately confrontational ourselves.
As far as STO--if certain people become too annoying or too difficult to put up with without allowing one's temper to get out of check, as others in this thread have said, your best bet is to a) turn off Zone, and b) if you do want to socialize, look for a casual fleet and socialize exclusively with them, and c) remember not to create a feedback look by behaving in a way that others might perceive as accusatory or aggressive. (The key word here is "perceive," because it can happen without any ill intent on your part, and I don't think you had any here.)

Welcome to STO...you must be new to the forums. It was actually worst a year ago when Delta Rising launched. I think overall (at least from a forum perspective) things aren't too bad as it was a year ago. There is a power creep and the elite now are the DPSers as compared to the Foundry authors or the PvPers as used to be once. Due to the DPSers you might get some flame if not using "proper" upgrades. However, I still use alts with X12 stuff and still do fairly Ok on PvEs. I cannot afford XIV for ALL my alts so thats a challenge but wouldnt dare to do a Elite PvE on that built...get a fleet if you can. Even if you are passing by a fleet can always help instead of using zone/team chat.
Last, relative compared to other MMOs...forums here not too bad. Take a look at at SWTOR forums and you would really see the scum of the scum when it comes to flaming. Good luck!
Kodachikuno and I agreed on something. The community really is coming together *single tear* Well, besides Republic v. Empire, that is
But yeah, when it comes down to it, the community is generally a nice place. The jerks might seem more numerous than they are, only because they yell the most and the loudest.
I thought this was the thread I should come to too get beaten with a wet noodle.
